A protest march will be held in Birmingham next weekend to try and save the jobs of grid girls. More than 1,000 people - including dozens of models - are expected at the event at the Bullring on Saturday February 10. They will be staging a “quiet march” through the Bullring from 1pm to stand up for their “harmless industry”.

Someone should tell them that they need to marching in the US if they want
to get their message to the movers and shakers of F1. Oh, maybe Ross Brawn
might take notice and pass it on to his 'which way is the wind blowing now?'
bosses.

This report just goes to show how few people have paid proper attention to what Liberty have said they are getting rid of.

EG "Grid girls wear tight revealing clothes and parade around the pit lanes prior to races."

Really? Well that's not what Liberty want done away with. They have said nothing about women in promotional clothing in the pit lane. They haven't even said anything about the women who clap the drivers onto the podium. They specified women on the grid during the pre-race period.

And there's this: "The founder and owner of Dream Street Models and Events, Chloe Avon, said the livelihood of her models was at stake. She said she got involved in Saturday’s protest because she supplied the girls for Racewars GBR driving experience days."

Well, unless those driving experience days take place on the F1 weekend at the F1 venue then F1 have no say over that, and if they are thus aligned but don't have women standing on the grid with markers, then F1 have said nothing about that.

Good on them for standing up, and it is every person's right to assemble to make a point, but it does seem to me that a lot of people have really not bothered to understand Liberty's position, and are taking their cue from newspapers that (let's be generous) have been similarly careless.

Good on them for standing up,
Girls chant after me:

WHAT DO DO WE WANT?

"We WANT our bums and boobs be ogled and whistled at!"
"We WANT our bums and boobs be ogled and whistled at!"
"We WANT our bums and boobs be ogled and whistled at!"

Drivers chant after me:

WHAT DO WE WANT?

"We WANT to grin at bums and boobs 'cos we're not gay!"
"We WANT to grin at bums and boobs 'cos we're not gay!"
"We WANT to grin at bums and boobs 'cos we're not gay!"

I think we have found the root cause of the problem. Dirty old men.

How many jobs are we actually talking about here? A few hundred?

My company laid off about 5000 people last year because we were no
longer considered necessary to the business. Prior to that, we've had
layoffs almost every year I can remember. Welcome to the real world, girls.

I'm trying to figure out which top level of executives should be fired: those who ran a company with 500 unnecessary people, or those who took fat bonuses for firing 500 people. One day there will remain only the CEO and yourself, and the company will be fabulously wealthy ---.

The outfit I worked for held a get-together on the then-new idea of
"workspace: rent monthly as needed" and "staff: hire monthly as needed".

When line workers asked if this would apply to management, they were told sharply that "they did not understand the concept".

I think that it's argued the job of F1 grid girl can be a 'gateway gig'
through which they can get noticed (due to millions watching) and secure
further employment.

It's not being suggested that it's a full-time position and comparisions to
full-time positions aren't really relevant. Being an F1 grid girl for a
single weekend is a way to get noticed by millions of people without having
to pay some sleezy promoter in sexual favours (because there's no money
coming in until you get a gig) to get your face (and body) widely seen.

Hmmm. There might be an increase in opportunities for someone wanting to be
a 'promoter' due to this change. ;)

Yeah the Texaassurbator will be looking up CC's phone number already.

.... if he doesn't already have it because he likes the idea of CC's
'stache tickling up in between his arse-cheeks (or ass-cheeks 'cos Texi
wouldn't understand the proper spelling).

I doubt the F1 grid girls are all self employed and got the gig purely
by writing a nice letter with some photos to the local organisers.

They'll be booked via an agency - and the one's who previously have made
the most money from these arrangements, and have the most to lose, are those
agents / agencies in terms of the commissions they'll take.

Yes, the women get to add some glamourous photos to their portfolios which
might help them in the future get more work - but their field is an agency
led one, and unless you are a top household name your work will depend on
your agent primarily.

The last part of my post was a off-the-cuff nod to the perverts in the
group. The rest of my post stands (as you said they might get more work due
to a bigger portfolio).
