Discussion:
Book above doctor's head in THE SHINING
(too old to reply)

During the scene where Wendy sits down to talk to the Doctor in THE
SHINING, a thick blue book is seen behind the doctors head,
immediately to her right. Can anyone identify this book or its author?

This scene has some interesting/relevant books, papers etc scattered
about, but no one's been able to make out the title of this particular
one.

I have checked and it looks like it could be "In This House of Brede" by
Rumer Godden. However on looking closely in photoshop the word Brede is
very fuzzy and comes to resemble the word Panic. I wonder if he altered
it...

The book is about an enclosed community of nuns who overcome crisis by
their devotion to faith and spirituality.

I initially thought the last word was "panic". This was the case
because the font type they used for the letter e can look like a c when
viewed from far away or where the resolution isn't high enough. "In
This House of Panic" i thought amusing. However, i think it is
interesting that the doctor is talking about auto hypnosis and self
suggestion when there is a book above her head that deals with religion
and spiritualism.

Thanks, for those links. Mystery solved...

Now the question is where is the connection. On purpose? accident?
Just from a handful of books set up there.

Maybe there will be a run on House of Brede copies.

W e l l. that's what you would have read if Mrs. Pynchon hadn't taken sick as she was. From Kirk Douglas, Godfather to us all, Vanity Fair, September 2011, page 144
"Soon I will be 95 -
That is if I'm still alive.
I ask my friend who is 98,
'What do you think of our inevitable
fate?"
He smiles and turns away.
'I think of life,' I hear him say."

From Daniel E. Slotnik, OBITUARIES, The New York Times for February 26, 2012 - goodbye, au revoir to Dmitri Nabokov, heir to Vladimir and Vera; all of this group, on or off drugs of a different persuasion, "as simple as a butterfly," Lewis Milestone recounted in HOLLYWOOD starring James Mason - "After his mother died in 1991, Mr. Nabokov moved into her apartment in Montreux, where he oversaw the Nabokov estate and where he lived at his death {born May 10, 1934 in Berlin}. . . in his memoir, Mr. Nabokov recalled one of his last exchanges with his father, who died in 1977. They spoke of butterflies, and of a bucolic valley near their home in Switzerland that they had always meant to explore.

" 'Tears suddenly welled in Father's eyes,' Mr. Nabokov wrote. 'I asked him why. He replied that a certain butterfly was already on the wing; and his eyes told me he no longer hoped that he would live to pursue it again. Nor would he ever visit that enchanted valley on the far side of the lake. But perhaps, in Father's memory, I shall.' "

"Until recently, no ancient historian was more widely read than the first-century soldier-statesman Flavius Josephus, the greatest source of our knowledge of the Holy Land 'between the Testaments.' In many a Victorian home and American Sunday-school library, a copy of William Whiston's translation of Josephus' works, first published in 1737 and reprinted more than 200 times since, held pride of place next to the Scriptures.
"Yet to his own people Josephus remained a pariah - a man who betrayed them in the hour of their greatest crisis. Voicing the view of many, Israeli archaelogist and general Yigael Yadin called Josephus 'a great historian and a bad Jew.'
It's AMK in the Bermuda Triangle.
"In the second and bolder part of 'A Jew Among Romans,' Mr. Raphael casts Josephus as a prototype of the alienated 'un-Jewish Jew' in the Diaspora. Josephus, he contends, was 'the first of many exiles who, whatever their internal dissidence, impersonated conformity with a dominant culture.' There follows a litany of solitaries that Mr. Raphael regards as prefigured by Josephus, from the poet Yehuda Halevi in 11th-century Andalusia to the philosopher Baruch Spinoza in 17th-century Holland, to Sigmund Freud in turn-of-the-century Vienna, to the French film-maker Claude Lanzmann, director of 'Shoah,' who is likened to 'some kind of modern Flavius Josephus, unflaggingly persistant in the retrieval and recording of painful memories.' Torn between contradictory affinities, each bore something of the pathos so evident in Josephus, 'a writer whose Sisyphean exercise was to retrieve what had been lost to his people and to himself." - Benjamin BALINT, writer in Jerusalem, for the Wall Street Journal, 19-20 January 2013

Turns out, " House of Brede" is a novel by Rumer Godden, who wrote the novel "The River" by Jean Renoir (which showed on TMC tonight)

And in The River, loo and behold we see a younger, more seductive, Mrs. Alexander as one of the three young women enamored by the soldier who lost a leg.

Id never seen this film before. I remembered this thread mentioning House of Brede.

Commenorating an aging Angelina Jolie showing her leg for all the dogs
to piss on. An aging Billy Crystal bombing at the Kodak. A French
film winning the highest award,

Hollywood might move to France. Some great deals on old Farmhouses.

During the scene where Wendy sits down to talk to the Doctor in THE
SHINING, a thick blue book is seen behind the doctors head,
immediately to her right. Can anyone identify this book or its author?
This scene has some interesting/relevant books, papers etc scattered
about, but no one's been able to make out the title of this particular
one.

You are very sure of yourself, aren't you.

I believe it really is "In this House of Brede." From the author of The River made into the Renoir film with the young Mrs. Alexander.

I suspect Kubrick saw her in The River, and wanted her in ACO and he picked books to appear in The Shining.
