Never heard of Charlie Murphy. Barbara Hale was an Emmy winner.
Charlie Murphy was Eddie's older brother and was in a current series,
BLACK JESUS. He belonged in. So did Barbara Hale.

They'd left a long gap between the two segments for last-minute
inserts. Too bad they didn't take advantage of it. And I'm calling
horseshit on the idea that there wasn't enough time to include Harry
Dean Stanton. The obits are more or less Powerpoint presentations
these days; they could have included Stanton in two minutes or less.

Why the hate for Charlie Murphy? Of course Barbara Hale belonged in, but it's not an "either/or" question. One needn't be -- as was Ms. Hale -- on a 10-yr iconic series to merit inclusion. Charlie did a terrific job on Chappelle's Show and Black Jesus. He should have been noted, with Ms. Hale, Richard Anderson, and several others mentioned above.

currently being seen in POWER. He was famous in his own right.

I hate to agree with Ellsworth. I'm pretty good at recognizing celebs down to the D level (minus Reality TV) but I had know idea Eddie had a brother, let alone that he was 'in the business' until he died.

I was vaguely aware of his existence, but that's about all. Not that
there aren't holes in my celebrity knowledge, but looking over his
credits ... yeah, the only thing that distinguishes him from "Guy who
played third alien from the left in that one old Star Trek episode" is
his used-to-be-a-megastar brother.

Judge Wapner and Erin Moran were included in the memoriam segment for the daytime Emmys. (I would have associated Moran with the prime time version for Happy Days, of course, rather than the soap she was on.)

No excuse for missing Barbara Hale (an Emmy winner, and on an iconic show), Ron Glass (a nominee) and Anderson (first/only person to play the same role on two concurrent shows; I guess Martin Brooks qualifies for playing Rudy Wells, but I don't recall he was in every episode.) Guess those creating the memoriam reel are too young to remember them.

I've been watching the entire MTM series since her death and am about
halfway through season 5. I am strongly inclined to agree with
Podhoretz's assessment. The whole cast was very strong, but Moore
herself was just brilliant.

The Mary Tyler Moore show had IMO the greatest ensemble cast ever assembled for a sitcom.

I always enjoyed her show, but I never thought she was brilliant. MTM was one of the better "work place" sitcoms. However, M*A*S*H was better. Actually, I liked Mary better as Laura Petrie than I did as Mary Richards.

M*A*S*H went on about 5 seasons too long IMO, but in it's first 3-4 seasons it was brilliant. The Mary Tyler Moore show, I think, quit at just the right time, just as the Dick Van Dyke show before it did. Seven seasons is, with few exceptions, about the right length for a sitcom, IMO. After that, it seems after that many episodes (150 or so) they've just about explored every possible comedic scenario concerning the characters and the show begins to get stale.

There were many scenes containing no laugh track. As you may recall, M*A*S*H was one of the first sitcoms to mix humor and tragedy together, successfully. That's why it was on for 11 seasons. People liked it. However, the reason I didn't realize that there was a laugh track was because my own laughter drowned it out. And the show went out still as a top watched program. It's final episode/movie was one of the most watched episodes of all time. People liked it and watched it.

Gee, I thought most folks of a certain age remembered it. It won several Emmys as I recall (for those of you who think awards are important)

I didn't watch it all the time, but enjoyed the episodes I saw. Its criticism was mostly from the Right-wing culture warriors against the Sixties Generation, even though many of the characters were stereotypes like "The Big Chill". A more authentic film was "Return of the Secaucus 7".

I didn't realize that there was a laugh track was because my own
laughter drowned it out. And the show went out still as a top watched
program.
Post by David Carson
I'm picturing a past-middle-age hippie watching the TV and slapping his
knee saying, "Ha-ha! It's a MAN wearing a DRESS! Can you believe that? He
wants people to think he's CRAZY, so he wears a DRESS! Now *that's*
funny!"
That's not what the draft-dodging commie Mucus finds funny about MASH.

Mucus loves the way the show denigrates the Army and all the people who
fought for our country and South Korea against the commie bastards. He
loves how the heroes Hawkeye and Blow Job Honeycunt show disrespect
towards not only superior officers, but also towards other government
operatives who are there to win the war. Mucus is especially fond of
the way generals are treated.

Mucus loves it when those two disobey orders and go out on their own
because they alone are the only people who can help the poor innocent
civilians trapped in this war they claim the Americans brought on.

Mucus loves the way Hawk and Blow Job "convert" the ever-conservative
Hot Lips over to their side of thinking and how she becomes (almost)
anti-war towards the end.

But if those few examples of libtard anti war humor aren't enough to
keep even the most fervent commie like Mucus entertained, there is the
drama:

Mucus loves the preachy sermons the show started spoon feeding people
after the three major characters left the show and Alda took over. He
loves to show the heroic left wing peace doctors single handedly fixing
everyone, even Norks from the nasty American military/industrial
products.

He loves the constant put down and disrespect of American values that
were meant to reinforce the boomer scum bags who already converted and
convert the rest.

He loves to portray even the doctors as victims of the nasty war which
allows the libs to forgive sins such as adultery, alcoholism, sexual
abuse, racial bigotry and intimidation that the heroes practice on a
regular basis. It's not their fault is it? It's the fault of the USA
for starting the war-which it did not.

So these are the reasons why a dickhead like Catone would enjoy a show
like this, particularly after Alda took over creative control.

You forgot the part about that these doctors right in the middle of war
zone absolutely detest the idea of guns! Ewwww! Can't touch them, can't
look at them, and certainly can't defend your own life with one. They
are there to SAVE lives not take them even if they have to "take a
stand" and show that they are hopeless helpless heroes who show their
bravery by standing the and "taking their medicine" by allowing
themselves to be killed. THAT is how great America could be if only Libs
could win again!

One can make a good argument for liking MASH I suppose but claiming it is actually funny in any way shows you're completing full of shit.

I liked it enough back in the day to watch it when it was on, but there
were a lot of things I never thought were funny. I know I've already said
this, but the bit where Hawkeye complained about the food and insulted the
"staff" AT EVERY MEAL made me hate him. What a jerk. What a disgusting
man. (Why would Alda even agree to do those scenes? Was he that blind as
to how it made his character come off?) Meanwhile, Marcus was laughing so
loud at the poor schmuck getting an earful from the prima donna doctor
that he didn't even notice there was a laugh track. Unbelievable.

I rarely see it in reruns, but if I catch one, I will watch it if it's a
Blake. If it's a Potter, I'm turning the channel. Even though I enjoyed
Winchester, and they finally made Margaret interesting toward the end,
Potter's forced cornpone schtick is too annoying for me to sit through.

Just saw the M*A*S*H episode, "As You Were", laugh track quite low, hardly any actually...and I had three to four hearty belly-laughs during it.

Still holds up.

Best TV show of all time.

I'm surprised that Alda and Farrell haven't come out and tried to make
it look like MASH was ahead of its time in promoting crossdressing with
the way they made the Klinger character so prominent.

I've been watching it too. Just finished season 6. I don't like when she moved to the new apartment. But I like how they seemlessly moved into new cast members Betty White and Georgia Engel after Harper and Leachman left.
I agree with you about the 7 seasons theory most of the time, but M*A*S*H was the exception.
It was hilarious every time Hawkeye sexually harassed the nurses (well,
except for the fat minority one) and insulted the private who served him
his meals. Or at least the recorded laughter made it sound hilarious.
What recorded laughter?
What a jerkoff you are. One of your favorite shows of all time and you
don't know there is a laugh track?

Spot on. The show got preachy when Burns, Trapper and Col. Blake left.
Then Alda took over with his beard BJ Honeycunt and turned into a
libtard pulpit with no sense of humor.

They tried to portray it as a realistic example of military life in the
Korean War. Anyone who pulled the shit Hawkeye did would have wound up
in Leavenworth Prison with a dishonorable discharge doing 20 years of
hard labor.

But scumbags like Marcus would not know that. They live in libtwat
fantasy world.

Seven seasons of course is related to the De Havilland Rule (Dame Olivia
won a court case enforcing California limits of employment contracts to 7
years). If there wasn't a guaranteed right of stars to quit/renegotiate at
that point would the optimal lifespan of series themselves be any
different?

Mary Tyler Moore should have had a stand alone tribute. As John
Podhoretz has written she was the greatest actress in TV sitcom
history.
I've been watching the entire MTM series since her death and am about
halfway through season 5. I am strongly inclined to agree with
Podhoretz's assessment. The whole cast was very strong, but Moore
herself was just brilliant.
The whole newsroom did an extra specil super duper
job in the episode they ran October 20, 1973...

No excuse for missing Barbara Hale (an Emmy winner, and on an iconic show), Ron Glass (a nominee) and Anderson (first/only person to play the same role on two concurrent shows;
You sure that wasn't Frank Cady?...r
In addition to your notation of Frank Cady, I was reminded today that Leo Carroll played the same role on both Man and Girl from UNCLE at the same time. Same network, of course.

Using Barbara Billingsley as the center point, this other Who?Nobody would
