Two start up menu functions have stopped working. I can't shut the pc
down or switch users. There are other ways to do it, but it's annoying.
I've tried a couple of solutions from t'interwebby thing, but solutions
they aren't.

Not sure what you mean by "start up menu" ? Is that the button with the
window pane on it at the left of the task bar ?

I'm sure my new laptop with Win10 Home is slightly different to my old
one (which is broken so I can't check) in that I don't recall that when
I clicked on that windows button that there was a sub menu on the left
hand side of the screen with (from bottom up):
- a POWER button (icon of circle with a vertical bar breaking the top
half of it)
- a settings button (gear wheel icon)
- a user button (person silhouette icon)
- (at the top) a 3 horizontal bar icon which expands this menu

Are those there ?

They are. Normally when I click on the power button a box pops up with
three options in it, shut down, restart or hibernate. Now the box pops
up for a fraction of a second, then disappears. The user button now just
shows the current user, with no option to change.

I've been having monitor problems - the monitor sometimes refuses to wake
up and when switching it off and on again doesn't work the only other
option I've come up with is to reboot or power off. As a pre-mouse user I
figured there must be a keyboard only option for shut down and on Win10 it
goes:
Windows key
tab once
down arrow 4 times
enter twice

As your monitor is working I suggest you try this and see if it looks
likely to work.

If it does I think the problem may lie with your mouse - feed it some
chocolate or buy a new one :)

Is that an option with W10? The thing I don't like is that I get no
say over when the updates happen and what it does. Last week, it
updated and the wifi adaptor wouldn't work until I ran the
troubleshooter. Each update brings a random driver issue.

I haven't had an update for it yet. I assume Win 10 updates set restore
points, but can't check obviously...

IIRC, unlike earlier versions, Win 10 doesn't create restore
points by default, you have to turn them on.

No upgrades, so problems are not fixed with the next round. Essentially
the software is permanently bugged (it always was of course) but if you
are connected you get fixed, probably before the average user has
encountered the bug.

No upgrades, so problems are not fixed with the next round.
Essentially the software is permanently bugged (it always was of
course) but if you are connected you get fixed, probably before the

I know nothing about Win10, but other Windowses that I have used have
had a constant stream of bug fixing (supposedly) updates. That stopped,
not when the o/s was bug-free, but when support stopped. Let us call
the sequence of bug fixing (supposedly) Win10 updates

Win10', Win10'', Win10''', ...

Now you say that without those updates Win10 is permanently bugged, so
where in that sequence does it become permanently bug-free? I think we
both know the answer is nowhere.

Were I to use a not-updated Win10 computer, it will have (let's say)
87478 bugs in it; and if I update it, it will have

87474, 87469, 87466, ...

bugs in it. Why bother? Win10 will be discontinued long before that
sequence reaches 0. Actually my made-up sequence of numbers is too
optimistic, for I have assumed that no update introduces more bugs than
it fixes. What reason is there for thinking that that is so?

Wrong. We have Win10 forever now. With ongoing incremental changes
which will be bugged so the regular updates will continue to be needed -
but as before the average user will not spot a but before it gets fixed
because we do not use all of the software.

Because of the regular updates the system can now back up to before
the last update and then roll forward as Steve found.

Are those there ?

Have you still got the settings button just above the power one? In
settings go to additional power settings and you should be able to
change what the buttons do. Is that still there for you? (I asked b)

There isn't an option for that, but my computer reports that it is fully
up to date, which I choose to receive as a positive sign.
