Hi Conway,
Are you getting worried again that the group will dry up? not many people
here these days but still some. But you're still here :)

I was thinking of you a last month when there was a TV preview here on a
channel which shows a lot of British TV and movies that they have are going
to have "Lark Rise to Candleford" program on weekly in Canada.

When I told you before that I watched "Downton Abbey" on TV every week in
Toronto and in the U.S. ,you mentioned you and maybe your wife too, watched
"Lark
Rise to Candleford" every week and I couldn't find it on any channels here.
I think
the series ended in 2011 in the U.S.

It's been on TV for the past month or so on a Canadian TV channel. I saw it
a couple of times and it is OK, but doesn't draw my interest to the drama
and interesting situations of Downton abbey. Season 5 of Downton will be
released in mid November in the UK and released on January 5 on PBS weekly
in U.S. and Canada and I'll be watching it.

begin to discover the different personalities and how the characters
interact, you'll be hooked.

***I've been recovering from a colonoscopy and a cortisone shot to my back,
all in the same week. Cortisone, so far, ain't doing squat for me back. The
Hydrocodone, however, is a sovereign cure for spinal stenosis pain. Well,
not exactly a cure but it sharply reduces the discomfort. And it is cheap as
well. Problem now is the government has decided to throw a few logs in the
road for obtaining the drug. I now must trot down to the doctor's office
once a month to get a new prescription. Whatever. I'm retired.

I watch various TV programs, so don't have time for any more, but I will
see. I got hooked on Downton Abbey and even bought Seasons 1-4 on DVD. Now
waiting for Season 5 in Jan. I have a large collection of DVD movies Ive
collected through the years. I'm a movie bug. More older movies. Not much
interested in movies they make today.

I had a colonscopy once about 9 years ago and it's no picnic. A while back,
my arthritis doctor gave me a cortisone shot in the knee but it didnt' do
anything. He retired about a year ago, which was too bad. He was very
nice. Not all doctors are as nice as him. I had a colonoscopy 9 years ago and
hope I never have it done again. The preparation the night before got to me,
plus after the colonscopy I had a lot of pain in my intestines. But
sometimes has to be done. If the hydrocodone helps a lot, it would be worth
going to the doctors office once a month for a new prescription. You must be
relieved the colonscopy test is over. Ughhh...

It is the most accurate test. They have a test here in Ontario which is not
as thorough as colonoscopy but it shows up
possible colon problems. You can get a kit from your doctor and send a small
sample in the mail to a laboratory and results are sent to you and your
doctor. if anything suspicious go for a colonscopy. Or go for one anyway if
you want to be sure.

Yes, the stool samples are tested for signs of cancer or polyps . It is more
of a check to see obvious signs of something wrong in the colon and can be
done if its not 10 years since you had a colonscopy. The recommendation for
colonoscopy is every 10 years if you have no high risk problems like if
mother or father or immediate family had colon cancer or other colon
problems. Its not 10 years since I had a colonscopy. You can also have a
sigmoidoscopy which can tell a lot about the lower colon and not as invasive
as colonscopy.

My specialist recommends every five years and every other year a "smear
test". I guess I'm in a high-risk category because my mothers father died of
it at age 83. Evidently his rectal bleeding was thought to be hemorrhoids by
his aged physician and thus the cancer had much time to spread.

It's best to go along with what your gastroenterologist recommends. Your
mothers father could have had colon cancer for quite a few years. Colon
cancer is said to be a slow growing cancer which makes it more dangerous.

BTW, how are you feeling now that it's been quite a while since your
surgery? I still have same problems with my knee and hip. I've had other
issues to deal with so havent done anything about it and don't know when I
will. Last Fall my rheumatologist retired which I didn't know till I went to
his office when in his area, to make appointment last fall. His receptionist
said the doctor will only be here for another week and only taking a few
appointments- which was not me. I would have thought at some point the
receptionist or somebody would have let me know he was retiring as Ive gone
to him for about 7 years. He was a very good doctor. It's difficult to
replace very good doctors.

I know the feeling of lurching and wincing. Not good!. It's good the
cortisone shot helps the pain. I had a cortisone shot in my knee a couple of
years ago but it had no effect so I didn't get any more after that. .

Things got a bit mixed up above. I was asking Jeffrey above how he was
feeling since his surgery and said I still have same problems with my knee
and hip and Jeffrey replied to me about it on another post. But on the top
of the post I sent which you quote above, it said Conway Caine like it does
to identify who the message originated, but somehow you thought I was asking
you. Oh well, doesn't matter now.

I remember your wife had hip surgery. I am glad to hear she is back to
normal with an occasional pop and grind. I have read that can happen
sometimes with hip replacements. I should have hip replacement but it comes
and goes. Most people who have had it say its a long rehabilitation period
which I don't fancy. It's better if you have a lot of support people after
surgery I am sure..

That is probably the amount of time many or maybe even most people take
depending on the persons over-all health I guess. Some take less time, but
maybe it's best to think in terms of 6 months if it's less, it's a bonus.
Also, your wife had you to look after her which I'm sure helped her recovery

No, I did not have any polyps. If you have polyps, the time frame for having
another colonscopy can vary according to your physician's recommendation..

have genetic or other factors, your gastroenterologist would advise you.

Even if the find polyps which is not often the case, they are not always
cancerous and it depends on the size of them. If they are very small, they
may be removed during the colonscopy but may not be recommended to have
another colonscopy till another 10 years. Also, how often you have a
colonscopy or sigmoidoscopy depends on the recommendation of your
gastroenterologist. They know your medical history and are specialists
trained in colon problems
If your gastro says get another colonscopy in 10 years or 5 years, follow by
his advice.

Two fine U.S. medical institutiions below and if you read the information
about how often to get a colonscopy, both say 10 years but that is if you
are average with NO risks. If risks, of course it is different - can be a
few months maybe more or maybe less time, if there are risks.

Too many doctors!!
I listened to an interview on the radio. I haven't a clue who the lady
was, she writes books and was originally from England but living in
America for a long time. She felt a bit sick and run down so she went
to the doctor, he said she was depressed and gave her some anti
depressants. The anti depressants didn't help, but she had to pay for
the consultations and medicines anyway. Then she was referred to
another doctor who diagnosed bi polar disorder and gave sorry sold her
some anti psychotic medicines. It wasn't long before she was knocked
out dumified and almost totally bed-bound. One last chance she went to
see an entirely different doctor 3rd time lucky, simple and
inexpensive blood test revealed that she had lymes disease. Bad for
her some organ damage had already occured because of the failure of
the other two doctors to diagnose the condition.

If a plumber makes a blunder he gets wet
If an electrician makes a blunder he kills himself
If your doctor makes a blunder he kills you.
Yet people hold their plumber to account before they hold their doctor
to account..
Your doctor is not your friend, you are just his wage fodder, if he
gets it right or gets it wrong he still gets paid.

****Ten years? Most medical sites I have visited indicates it takes, on
average, ten years for a polyp to turn cancerous, sometimes less. Thus the
maximum time recommended between colonoscopies is five years.
I don't think so. Where did you get the infromation that a colonscopy for
someone who has had a colonscopy in the past and no risks have been found
that they have to get another colonscopy in 5 years? Maybe its 5 years in
some cases such as if you are high risk or have had a colonscopy before and
they found a polyp, but
****My butt doctor, supported by several medical sites whose names I
cannot remember. Seems like Mayo Clinic may have been one of them.
Mayo Clinic recommends 10 years. Right at the top of the article in link
below wich I posted the other day it says "if you are an average risk for
colon cancer, your doctor may recommend waiting 10 years then repeat the
exam. It gives some other wait times for various risks and situations.

Anyway, I view with suspicion any and all recommendations made after the
"Affordable" Care Act came in to being. Example: the PSA test which has
saved countless lives since it was developed, is now preached against.
"Let the auld geezers die before they bankrupt Medicare" seems to be the
current mindset.
Not a good way to look at things.

Canada has "free" health care too, but our taxes are so high, it's not very
free but you can at least go to hospital in an emergency or elective, and
stay there if you are sick for a while and not have to pay anything.

There really weren't that many people who were truly uninsured in the

Prices for medical treatment in the U.S. is much higher than in Canada. If
we go to the U.S. we have to take out medical insurance because prices per
day for hospital care is much higher than in Canada and if you don't take
any medical insurance before you go, you could owe thousands of dollars in
medical costs. I never go to the U.S. without buying comprehensive medical
insurance.
Isn't there a reasonably priced medical plan in the U.S. for residents over
65?

Yep. And we spend our whole working lives paying for that. I'd
probably be better off if they'd just let me keep the money and buy my
own insurance when I'm 65. We also have coverage for folks who are
poor, which gets paid for by the rest of us out of the general revenue

Somewhere between 80%-85% of Americans have always had medical

expense for those of us who already had insurance has only increased
those numbers by 2%-3%.

Your government has a mafioso "offer you can't refuse" with
pharmaceutical companies, where the Canadian government told them they
could either meet the price Canada was willing to offer or the
Canadian government would violate their patents and make the stuff

You cannot seriously believe the price difference for drugs is just

Let me see here 44/319 = 13.8%. So 86.2% have insurance. Now go look
at what I said, above. Note that half or more of those folks without
insurance are illegal immigrants.

It also depends on what you call "no insurance" and "adequate
insurance". Lots of people don't carry insurance by choice because
they're young and healthy and paying into an insurance pool is a
losing proposition for them. Same with a lot of those folks without
"adequate" insurance. They carry catastrophic illness insurance only
by choice.

All those people (except for the illegal immigrants) will be FINED for
not having insurance under the 'Affordable' Care Act. Many of them
will pay the fine rather than get insurance because it costs less than
the 'affordable' insurance that they don't need.

We were better off before ObamaCare...

Fred - private medical can never work in the long term. Here is why.

Ok so you are young and fit - no problem - full insurance, private sectors is best at this.

You have a heart complaint - private sector wins again - straight in and it's fixed, no waiting around.

So you now have a second heart complaint (or cancer), well, we'll have to put up your premium.

What's that, you can't afford the premium? Tough, sell your house. You've already sold it (or you have no house to sell) - well, you're stuffed.

Just as few insurance companies will insure your old wreck of a car unless the premium is very high, same for humans.

Those are a big part of the people in the US who don't have health
insurance because it's a losing proposition for them. Part of
ObamaCare is an attempt to FORCE them to buy insurance (because that
will subsidize sicker people in the insurance pool). Unfortunately
the size of the fine that can be levied is less than the overpriced
insurance that ObamaCare has led to, so what we'll really get is an
extra government tax on the healthy.

stay there if you are sick for a while and not have to pay anything.
That's because you already paid. Last time I went to the hospital
(for surgery) I think I paid $15.
There really weren't that many people who were truly uninsured in the
US in the first place and all the expense of the ACA hasn't added all
that many people to the ranks of the insured.
Fred - private medical can never work in the long term. Here is why.
And yet it does. The following indicates you have zero clue about how
health insurance works.

Ok so you are young and fit - no problem - full insurance, private sectors is best at this.

You think premiums for health insurance are set by individual? What
planet do you live on?

Well it isn't lower for old people! We have private here too if you are daft enough to buy it in parallel with the state system (hence paying twice). When you hit 65 it shoots up and there are things they won't cover at all.

I don't know if you've ever read this one, Hardy, it actually is quite a
quick read and it fully describes both the corruption involved in it's
passage and the revolving-door of the major players in Washington who
ushered it through....And it also explains why Obama couldn't do anything
about lowering drug costs in his ACA. The last three pages are strictly the
list of resources used for this publication. A worthwhile read.

Yeah - sure - we pay national insurance I think. Used to be called that anyway.
But if you are poor or unemployed and have never paid a penny tax in your life you still get free health care in the UK.
The US has the worst value health care system in the western world too.

"Let the auld geezers die before they bankrupt Medicare" seems to be the
current mindset.
Not a good way to look at things.
*****Perhaps not, Mary. Let's wait and see how things develop.
You know, there are a lot of things wrong with Scotland but decent free
health care isn't one of them.
Canada has "free" health care too, but our taxes are so high, it's not very
free but you can at least go to hospital in an emergency or elective, and
stay there if you are sick for a while and not have to pay anything.
Yeah - sure - we pay national insurance I think. Used to be called that anyway.
But if you are poor or unemployed and have never paid a penny tax in your
life you still get free health care in the UK.
The US has the worst value health care system in the western world too.
It's the same here. If you are poor or unemployed, or stay in one room or
even if you are a refugee, you still get free health care, I meant income
taxes are high when you work, but if you don't work, you wouldnt pay income
tax.

I saw that on local TV news yesterday. I can't imagine getting a hospital
bill or any bill for $950,000. You have to be careful with insurance
companies.
Even when you think you are covered for everything, you may find you are
not,
according to the insurance company. How will this couple pay almost $1
million? I hope this can be settled favourably for the couple or they could
or they could be brankrupted.

The reason I don't post any more is my server stopped providing usenet as part of it's service. Now the only way I can join in is via google groups and it's pathetic clunky peice of **** that passes for a newsreader.
It took me ages to figure out how to block the idiots and trolls just for starters.

You really don't need to do that. There are several places you can
obtain a Usenet account, most of them free. I use Eternal September:

http://www.eternal-september.org/

You can then connect using your favorite newsreader; again, many are
available, and a lot of them are free.

Yeah yeah. So I've been told. I got a free trial with ....oh bollocks ... can't remember the name now and it ran out anyway.
But you have to remember I'm retarded. I only know how to use Outhouse Distress and Vista Bidnez doesn't support it.
In any case - none of you are really worth the bother.

I didn't know if it is the "Scotch-Irish" influence but the University
of North Carolina has a rather good agricultural department where they
developed a successful all-purpose chicken": young it is a Cornish Game
Hen, later a roasting chicken and can be allowed to grow up into an
egg-laying machine.

A female Japanese post-doc went with me to UNC for a scientific meeting.
