Lewis Hamilton snubs F1 fans in London so he could party in Greece

19 OF 20 FORMULA 1 DRIVERS PARTICIPATED IN PROMOTIONAL EVENT
JULY 12, 2017

Lewis Hamilton shamelessly snubbed his home fans on Wednesday by
choosing to party in Greece rather than join the other 19 drivers in
attending the "F1 Live" event on the streets of London ahead of the
British Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who is known for engaging with fans via his various social
media accounts, announced the news that he would not be attending the
event via a post on Facebook -- the post reading, “To my loving fans, I
can’t wait to see you in Silverstone. Until then, I’m away on a two-day
break. God Bless you all. Love, Lewis.”

The non-attendance of the British championship contender did not go
unnoticed by fans.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner wasted no time in criticizing one of his
rivals, saying, “It’s great to be in London for an event like this for
the British Grand Prix week. For everyone to see the cars up close, for
the drivers to be here -- well most of them. At least Toto (Wolff,
Mercedes team principal) is here.”

Wolff did not defend his driver, explaining that Hamilton needed several
days off after a tough weekend in Austria -- despite the fact that
Formula 1 has the traditional four-week summer break next month, which
includes a two-week mandatory shutdown period for all teams.

“Yeah, absolutely (we tried to convince Hamilton to attend),” said
Wolff. “It’s great to have you all here and us bringing the cars into
London is great. Lewis feels that he is in such a tough championship
fight that he decided that he needed the days off after Austria, but you
can see him at Silverstone.”

Suffering from the same stressful nature of the 2017 championship
battle, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate
Valtteri Bottas joined all of the other 17 drivers at the event on the
streets of London -- which will inevitably lead to questions over
Hamilton’s mental capacity to win another championship, as well as his
commitment to both Mercedes and Formula 1.

Lets face it, around here, anybody who doesn't love Lewis enough to have

Lewis Hamilton snubs F1 fans in London so he could party in Greece
The Daily Mail reports that Wolff was a guest at Vettel's birthday party, which fell between the Baku race and the appeal hearing, and suggests that Hamilton is a bit miffed by this.

Liberty cattily said that they had a great response from 19 current drivers.

I don't think Liberty went around the pit lane last weekend saying things like "if you're not busy next Wednesday...".

So it looks like a snub. It's a major PR faux pas for Hamilton. Reports are that there was booing in London when his name that mentioned, whilst Vettel got a big cheer.

There's trouble brewing. His attutude was pretty downcast last weekend.
I thought it maybe that Vettel was pulling away and Bottas has now
positioned himself as a major contender (Hamilton is no longer a
defacto number one)... Maybe it is that or maybe there is more to it.

From Joe Saward (who *was* there):

"I am told that Daniel also provided the humours in the driver briefing
when someone asked “Everybody here?” and he replied: “Yep, everyone
apart from Lewis”.

This was a bit of a black eye for Hamilton because he really ought to
have more nous than to go away from an event for his fans. It is was not
a smart thing to do and while one accepts that there was a lot of free
will going on from the teams to Liberty Media, there will have to be
arrangements made if there are going to be seven or eight of these
events each year around the world, which I believe will be happening in
the years ahead. The drivers get paid a lot of money and I do not think
it is unreasonable for them to give a little bit more back to the sport."

Lewis definitely should have been there.

Yeah. He's normally pretty good with the whole 'engaging with the fans'
thing so I'd hazard a guess that it's not just a decision he made in a fit
of pique. There's likely more to it (but the media will pump it for all they
can regardless).

The poser thinks he's 'special' and doesn't need to attend these events. He's the biggest attention seeker F1 has ever had, coupled with a massive sense of entitlement. The irony being in any other car than the Mercedes he wouldn't have won a race for the last 4 years.
When his own English-Sheep-Shagging fans are booing him and making sheep baa noises in London when his name was mentioned, it sums it all up.

As daft as it sounds, he may be having to very carefully limit the
number of days he spends in the UK for tax reasons.

IIRC, he lives in the tax haven of Monaco, and so, as a UK citizen will
be exempt from UK tax for a given tax year if he is not "resident" in the
UK during that tax year. The term "resident" has a definition in the UK
tax rules. I can't remember what it is now, but it used to be something
like less than 180 days, with no single continuous stay for more than 30
days, or something like that. So if you were in the UK for, say, total
100 days, but on one of your stays you stayed for 32 days, you'd be liable
for UK tax for the whole year.

The rules have since changed and are much harder to comply with, meaning
you can spend even less time in the country if you want to avoid paying
tax.

He probably has to carefully manage (or, his assistants do) the amount
of time he spends in the country.

That or he's still sulking after BOT's win in Austria :-)

He's handled it badly. He said he wanted to chill, then it emerges that that's exactly what he did, so people will assume, and it's understandable, that chilling for a couple of days was more important to him than meeting fans.

It's unlikely that Liberty cooked this whole thing up last weekend. They know that drivers and teams have off-track commitments and would have given them adequate heads up.

It's entirely reasonable to conclude that Hamilton decided to ignore the fans and the best PR exercise F1 has undertaken in years and chose to chill out somewhere cool and expensive instead.

I was at the event. The fans noticed that Lewis was the only driver not
there, it only harms Lewis' reputation. We cheered all the other
drivers, whether we support them on track or not. All the drivers walked
around, many giving selfies with fans etc. at the end of the event.

It was very loud, it was fast driving, and Lewis lost out.
