And then it turns out, he's the one responsible for blowing the earth to

Thanks a lot, dick.

The earth explodes, 7 billion people dead
It was 1961. More like three billion.

and Superman's biggest concern is that he's an orphan again (a grown
man orphan, no less).
They are also affected by green earthite, as they are by kryptonite.
This worried him, too.

The machine was revealed in a letter column published several months
later to be a popcorn machine from an alien movie theater.

So ... Superman's Earth parents were killed by him when he was Superboy,
and his Kryptonian parents are alive in a survival capsule somewhere, so
how exactly does this make him an orphan? A similar notation for
Krypto, who doesn't have any adoptive parents on Earth, save for, oh
yeah, Superman and Supergirl. Supergirl's Kryptonian parents are alive
in a Survival Zone somewhere, so the closest anybody came to being
orphaned is Kara, 'cause the Danvers got atomized.

Here's a scan of the whole comic:

Yeah, and now those guys are losing out on several weeks' work and your
company isn't going to be paid its full demolition fee. You're too
stupid to realize that Superman is just being a dick again.

Supergirl had not yet met the Danverses. She wouldn't for several
months (in Action Comics #279, August 1961).

When Superman did something like that, they usually put in a line about
how the workers would get paid anyway under their contracts.

The "cardboard obelisk" is huge. That much cardboard should have
weighed most of a ton. Superman, exposed to kryptonite, shouldn't have
been able to lift it. Somebody ought to write a letter.

This is a time before unions when the foremen only cared about the
greater good.

I've always loved this from WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, the radio announcer
describing what people are doing as a giant star (!) is bearing down on
Earth to kill us all:

As evacuation of coastal cities
progressed,
tales of acts of heroism and sacrifice
poured into newspaper offices.
With few exceptions,
transportation and utility workers
volunteered to remain at their posts
until the evacuation is completed.

Because, yeah, all those selfless utility workers.

You might know the answer to this: Is it true that the scene showing
the flooding of Times Square was done after the film was completed so
the studio would have a cool poster to promote the film? Thanks.

(That is still one hell of a scene.)

Could be - I'm sure it got plenty of attention just like The Man in
the High Castle got a lot of attention the very early Sunday morning
they hung a 100' long swastika banner from one of the largest hotels
in Vancouver. That definitely wasn't CGI!

Whoops, I was using someone's computer and forgot that they were logged into Usenet and I wasn't. I was the person who posted about Sid (my uncle) and "When Worlds Collide".

Sorry, I don't know about when and how the flooding in Times Square was done for the movie.

My uncle and I usually talked more about his interactions with the Marx Brothers, especially Groucho.

Flooded optically; the water has matte lines around it that rivals the

Heck if that's all he cares about why not call in the US Army
Engineers?

That's what happened when the RCMP and Washington State Police found a
tunnel dug under the border that was being used to move drugs to and
fro across the US Canadian border.

Apparently some officer from the US Army Engineers at Fort Lewis, WA
(which is about 1/2 hr south of Seattle) read about it in the
newspaper, called the State Poilice and asked what they intended to do
with the tunnel and told them "my boys could use the demolitions
practice".

The State Police said yes pending the RCMP also saying yes (which they
quickly did ) and the following week the explosion was heard on both
sides of the border......

The earth explodes, 7 billion people dead, and Superman's biggest concern
is that he's an orphan again (a grown man orphan, no less).
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ert1pznazsp95f5/SM1.jpg?dl=0
And then it turns out, he's the one responsible for blowing the earth to
smithereens in the first place.

Thanks a lot, dick.

Three big story! Funny comics pages! A salute to our American Indians!
Oh, and it's nice that all the henchmen show up to do their crime in
suits and ties. They had a much more classy level of bad guys back then.

Here's one that always got me, in the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie, at the end he turned back time, just far enough to save Lois Lane, but not far enough to give him enough time to stop the second nuclear missile from hitting the San Andreas Fault and preventing the earthquake and saving all the people who died and preventing all the damage that ensued.

Well, that sequence makes no sense, but apparently he *did* go back far
enough to stop the second missile (the original idea was that he tosses
it up and it frees the Phantom Zone prisoners, which became the
beginning of Superman 2). The earthquake *didn't* happen (note that
Lois' car isn't buried any more) although for some reason Jimmy
*remembers* it.

Lois also remembered the earthquake when Superman flew back to her after turning back time, she mentioned the gas station blowing up and telephone poles falling around her.

And this brought up another issue I had with the first Superman movie - is there a limit to how fast Superman can fly? He was obviously faster than the two missiles because they had a head start on him and he caught the first one and just missed the second one. Those missiles seemed to be traveling at a speed much less than the speed of sound, yet he could fly around the world several times a second when he was turning back time, which I'm guessing was meant to show that he had to travel at the speed of light in order to turn back time.

On the other hand, in Superman II, when Lois was in Paris and there were terrorists who had a nuclear device at the Eiffel Tower, are we to believe that Superman spent 5-6 hours flying across the Atlantic Ocean to get from Metropolis to Paris? Or that it takes him hours to fly from Metropolis to his Fortress of Solitude?

Superman IV was an awful movie, but the absolute worst thing about it was the deleted scene which revolved around the first Superman clone that Lex Luthor created. Lex didn't quite have the technology worked out with it, and the creature was sort of mentally challenged and could not talk or think things out very well, almost a bizarro Superman. Superman was able to defeat him pretty easily. This was fan edited but somebody actually came up with this:

So the same iteration of Superman in the previous movie was strong
enough to fly into the earth's mantle and push tectonic plates together,
but here he's straining to crush a few cars into each other. If he
strong enough to move North America, he should have smashed those cars
down to atoms in a nanosecond.

That was always the problem with super-powered beings like Superman.
Their powers always seemed to be situational. If they were up against
some other super-powered being their abilities would scale up to be
equal or slightly more. When against less powerful beings their powers
would scale down to be equal or slightly more powerful. It only made
sense from the idea that the writers didn't want the bad guys
instantly defeated by some super powerful being. It never made any
sense from a story basis. (Though I think some writers tried to
explain as someone like Superman being unwilling to risk using most of
his ability because he might kill someone if he used too much of his
strength.)

"By moving these worlds from their own dying galaxy to new suns at
the other side of universe, I'm saving billions of lives!"

No you're not, dick.

The moment you towed them away from their suns, every life on those
planets was doomed. They'd freeze solid within days. The ecosystems
would be forever trashed and the tidal forces generated by yanking them
around would throw the oceans over the continents and cause planet-wide
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Oh, and considering that you're heading for "the other side of the
universe", that's about 91 billion light years you're gonna have to drag
them. Even if you could pull them at the speed of light, that's still a
91 billion-year journey and it would instantly kill all life on the
planets.

And where the fuck did Superman get a chain that big and long? And
what's it hooked to that wouldn't snap off rather than drag the planet?
