I hate to be the bearer of bad news Comrade...actually that's not true but to get to the point...there hasn't been an empire, effectively, since long before the momentous events of 1947 and certainly before one's illustrious kinspersons in Ireland finally managed to shaft the British raj although, in this forum, there has never been a consensus on the actual date when the shafting became effective.

Fada beo i bPoblacht na hÉireann!
Long live the Republic of Ireland!
I'm sure the Queen shares my sentiments.

Wrong, technically the Empire still exists - whilst there are still British possessions besides Great Britain itself. However I can see that you are probably making the assumption that since the title "Emperor" fell into abeyance after the independence of India, then the "Empire" ceased to exist.

(Don't read this Comrade - it will give you apoplexy).

Seriously? Could you be indulging in nostalgia and wishful thinking, not that there's anything wrong with that? I thought the "Commonwealth" came into being specifically because the "Empire" ceased to exist. The term seems to have been used loosely in the past to describe the collection of kingdoms that accumulated under the British crown whereas the only real empire that was part of the equation, technically, was that of India, before independence and partition? Of course that changed in 1947, as you point out. Indeed, if there is still a British empire, then why isn't it called that? Either there is a substantive British empire which can technically be described as such, or it exists as nothing more than a nostalgic reach into a past that no longer exists. Perhaps the real issue is one of semantics.

The term "Commonwealth" was suggested by Field Marshal Jan Smuts in 1917 but took a while to catch on. Here in Oz it was normal discussion to still refer to the British Empire right into the 1960's and you will recall that the Commonwealth Games were called the "Empire Games" into the '6o's as well. As you say it is a matter of semantics and nothing much to worry over other than a technicality.

The 26 less fortunate counties of Ireland ceased to enjoy the priceless
blessing of Royal government in 1949,having proven themselves undeserving
over the previous decades, but the Queen's titles were not revised to
reflect this calamitous misfortune having blighted Ireland until March
26th 1953.
Even to this day the Hanoverian dynasts remain Princes of Ireland,so
Irish persons hoping for emergence from the republican nightmare may look
to them as tokens of a better age to come.

Nonsense. The king was created by, and was a creature of, the constitution. After 1936, there was no king in Ireland. The Sasanach king was employed after 1936 as a sub-contractor.

described as such,
There is...the UK and its possessions outside the UK proper.
Very predictaable Comrade. So what's your version of the date when
Ireland finally shafted the United...I mean, when Ireland finally and
absolutely achieved independence from the raj?
The 26 less fortunate counties of Ireland ceased to enjoy the priceless
blessing of Royal government in 1949,having proven themselves undeserving
over the previous decades, but the Queen's titles were not revised to
reflect this calamitous misfortune having blighted Ireland until March
26th 1953.
Even to this day the Hanoverian dynasts remain Princes of Ireland,so
Irish persons hoping for emergence from the republican nightmare may look
to them as tokens of a better age to come.
For someone who spends most of his time spewing numerological nonsense, you might at least get the numbers right. Ireland had the good sense to boot the Sasanach parasites in 1936/37, not 1949!
I have been reading Dr Niall Keogh's 'Con Cremin- Ireland's wartime diplomat'. Its subject was Irish charge d'affaires in Berlin in the closing stages of World War II. The reason why he was not appointed as an ambassador during WWII was that they decided (P58) 'not to risk British apoplexy by requesting the king's consent' as all Ireland was part of the commonwealth'. Keogh cites Fisk, 'In time of War', P372.

Fada beo i bPoblacht na h?ireann!

Seriously? Could you be indulging in nostalgia and wishful thinking,
not that there's anything wrong with that? I thought the "Commonwealth"
came into being specifically because the "Empire" ceased to exist.
No...they are concentric circles.
The Commonwealth is everyplace under the Queen (as its Head),
the Empire is everyplace under the Prime Minister.
Post by hihgdm
The term seems to have been used loosely in the past to describe the
collection of kingdoms that accumulated under the British crown whereas
the only real empire that was part of the equation, technically, was
that of India, before independence and partition? Of course that
changed in 1947, as you point out. Indeed, if there is still a British
empire, then why isn't it called that?
Because people like you don't realize that it ought to be called that.

Perhaps the good Dr. Keogh needs to broaden his education. If he were to read the history of the Irish diplomatic service he would find that diplomats during this period were not necessarily accredited to the Sasanach king - the President performed this function also.

Donald,
I am getting rather worried about you!
While I don't agree with your monarchist leanings, you previously avoided the lunatic beliefs that so sadly afflict poor Louie. Until now, that is.
The Empire became terminally ill at Easter 1916, and passed away in August 1947. It has been mouldering ever since.

As I said, if you bother to read what I write correctly, "The Empire" exists technically speaking. An Empire exists where one country retains overseas territories it rules directly. The U.K. still has overseas territories it rules directly - one of them being the Falkland Islands.

Due to political correctness which has crept up on us stealthily over the past few decades, it would be considered "bad form" to mention "The Empire" such as it is now bad form to mention "British" in front of "Commonwealth". I suppose what we shall eventually see is further eroding of the name to just plain "Common" before too long. Somehow I think that would fit nicely into the scheme of things in this rather silly modern world.

By 'Craig', may I assume that you mean https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Craig_(physician) who was elected to the Parliament of Southern Ireland in 1921 as an Independent Unionist, and to every Dail elected between 1922 and 1933 as an Independent? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Craig,_1st_Viscount_Craigavon never sat in the Dail (just as Eamon de Valera never sat in Westminster). However, the physician's fellow member for Dublin University https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Alton sat for that constituency until it was abolished in 1937.

but to get to the point...there hasn't been an empire, effectively,
So long as there are any British colonies there is an Empire.
But there aren't any "British colonies" anymore! So no Empire, by your own argument.

since long before the momentous events of 1947 and certainly before
one's illustrious kinspersons in Ireland finally managed to shaft the
British raj although, in this forum, there has never been a consensus on
the actual date when the shafting became effective.
Fada beo i bPoblacht na h?ireann!
Long live the Republic of Ireland!
May a Unionist government take power in Dublin and
repeal all post-1921 enactments, just as the Cromwellian
legislation was repealed in 1660!
There hasn't been a single unionist in the Dail since almost forever - since Craig?

The very man! I did not mean to imply the "other" James Craig.

It is an extremely delicate problem. The Gibraltar Plantation has very
strong attachments with the English Pirates.

One can quite admire the Chief in some ways - how he constantly never worries about the relevant facts getting in the way when pressing his points.

His Late Majesty King George VI was still King of Ireland up until 1949 no matter which way you look at it.

Donald,
Perhaps you have spent too long squinting into the Antipodean sun?
