On E-Bay, there are two McIntosh laserdisc players. The asking price
is over $700.00. Since it is based on the CLD-97, those sometimes go
for just over $200.00. Why such a high price for the
McIntosh? Do any of you out there have a McIntosh? I have the
Pioneer CLD-99 and play it on a analog TV. I get smearing on some
LDs, I was just wondering if the McIntosh did this, when the set Noise
Reduction is turned on. For the asking price, it seems that this was
the grand daddy of laserdisc players, yet many say it was the Pioneer
CLD-97. Should I wait and get a CLD-97 at a more reasonable price?
Any info would help. Thank you.

Maybe Kurtis can chime in, but the MLD-7020 is in fact a Pioneer
CLD-97 with a new spiffy faceplate, AC-3 RF out, and a slower disc
turn mechanism (you lose the theater mode of the CLD-97). It will
smear on CLV discs just like the CLD-97 does.

If you want the McIntosh look then buy the MLD-7020. I have repaired
many of these are they are a CLD-97 in a different package, no
electronic upgrades except for all the newer ones have AC-3 RF Added.
I do commonly have CLD-97's for sale that have been tested, adjusted,
I added AC-3 RF and default the DNR to OFF and they are guaranteed to
work. The 97 will have less smear than the 99. The biggest thing for
resolve smear is properly setting the black level on the TV and having
a TV with a quality power supply. I always had minimal smear with my
Pioneer RPTV's and no smear with my Pioneer Plasma.

Thank you for the info. Why do you default the DNR to off? Just
curious.

Because it looks better without DNR.

The 97 has a smoother analog look with the DNR OFF, You really have to
look to see it is on but what you see when you tuen it on is that it
give a slight digitized blocky look. Different from the 704/99 type
players that need DNR to smooth the pictures noisy look.
