EQUALITY! SJWs Get High School Musical Canceled After White Student Lands Lead

Student activists and community members helped to get a production of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"
canceled at an Ithaca, New York high school after a white student was cast in a lead role.

According to the Ithaca Journal, five student activists wrote letters and put out a list of demands after
a white student, who the SJW group concedes is a "a stellar actor, singer, and dancer," was cast as
Esmeralda. Additionally, black student, 17-year-old Maddi Carroll, quit the play after the white student
was cast.

“It shows you that theater wasn’t made for you," Carroll told the Ithaca Journal. "And it shows you that,
if you can’t get the parts that are written for you, what parts are you going to get?”

In a letter that included a list of demands, the student activists demanded the high school girl cast as
Esmeralda be removed from the role because, despite her talent, she's the "epitome of whiteness."

"Unfortunately, it has also come to our attention that the casting of this musical is antithetical to the very
message which beats throughout the heart of the musical itself," reads the letter from the "diverse group
of students." "We speak, specifically, of the casting choice of the role of Esmerelda. Before we speak
further, we want to stress that the talented young woman who was cast in this role is a stellar actor, singer,
and dancer. She has worked hard to hone her craft and the IHS stage, or any stage, would be lucky to
have her. Our concern is not with her, but with the fact that in terms of demographics, she is the wrong
choice for this role."

"The young woman who was cast in this role has hazel eyes, blonde hair, and is the epitome of whiteness,"
the activists add.

The play was canceled. In a statement on Monday, Ithaca City School District announced plans for the
high school to put on "another collaborative project" in the play's place.

"We thank everyone for their contributions as we delve further into complex conversations," said the
school district. "In addition, we ask that you please stay engaged as we continually work to create
community-wide support for our students and school community."

"Our goal was not just to shut down the musical," said the 17-year-old who quit the play over the casting
of a white student. "We want to get a socially conscious director to replace the current director so that
everybody can participate.”

And since we know there is no appeasing the social justice Left, the activists posted more demands on
Facebook after the play was canceled.

"Stop the racist and openly stated policy of 'color blind' casting in the ICSD," says the post. "Because
of institutionalized racism this results in white children being cast in roles written as white parts and also
white children being cast in roles that were specifically intended for people of color."

Speaking to Fox News, the social justice activists said they are "in line with Martin Luther King, Jr.’s
message of love, unity, understanding, and inclusion."

"Our endgame," they told Fox, "is a performing arts program with more unity, more inclusion, and musical
where we can all experience the joy and bonding of inclusive performing arts following best theatrical
practices."

To recap, it's racist to cast a white girl as Esmeralda, but it's totally progressive to get her canned from
the position because of her skin color. Got it?

I'm not an expert in the demographics of 15th century Paris but I am
going to be very surprised if an expert comes along and tells us that
the percentage of blacks was more than one or two percent. I fail to
understand how any reasonable person could think that 25% of the cast
being black wasn't (more than) enough for purposes of historical
accuracy. Of course, none of these students appears to be remotely
reasonable.

I am also astounded at the claim that some of the parts were written for

If there was ever a stupider expression than "people of colour", I
haven't heard it yet. Since only people who are (literally) transparent,
don't have colour, we are *all* people of colour. The expression should
be "people of darker colour" or something in that neighbourhood to make
even a smidgen of sense.

I am taking a wild stab at this.... "Romani Gypsy" I don't know how that
translates to black.

That would be "olive" skinned meaning tan to me versus white. Much like
many of the Balkans are brownish tanned versus the pale white of more
western Europe.

But the racist Black complainers even acknowledge that the White

Not that a Black gal (or any ethnicity) couldn’t or shouldn’t play the part,
(its not a documentary, after all) the point is that the play was canceled
by the school administration, who knuckled under to Black racists who
insist that the role must only be played by a Black chick.

The Romani (also spelled Romany; /ˈroʊməni/, /ˈrɒ-/), or Roma, are a
traditionally itinerant ethnic group, living mostly in Europe and the
Americas and originating from the northern regions of the Indian
subcontinent, from the Indian states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and

The Romani (also spelled Romany; /ˈroʊməni/, /ˈrɒ-/), or Roma, are a
traditionally itinerant ethnic group, living mostly in Europe and the
Americas and originating from the northern Indian
subcontinent,[55][56][57] from the Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Sindh
regions of modern-day India and Pakistan.[56][57] A DNA study conducted
by Indian and Estonian research facilities shows that the
Roman/Romani/Gypsy and Sinti people originate from the Untouchable Dalit
community from India.[58]

European Roma descended from Indian 'untouchables', genetic study shows
Roma gypsies in Britain and Europe are descended from "dalits" or low
caste "untouchables" who migrated from the Indian sub-continent 1,400
years ago, a genetic study has suggested.

3)
As their name suggests, Gypsies were initially believed to have come
from Egypt. The Gypsies’ true ancestors, however, were a group of people
who left India between AD 800 and 950. The best estimates have dated
their earliest official appearance in Europe, in modern-day Turkey, to
around AD 855.

Apparently, you're unable to distinguish between contemporary Romani and
their distant ancestors. Yes, science seems pretty sure that their
ancestors originated from what is now India but contemporary Romani are
not viewed as Asians as far as I know, even if you claim otherwise. When
challenged on your claim, you only proved that their distant ancestors
came from India.

That's like insisting that aboriginal Canadians and Americans are Asian
because they originated in Asia.

As their name suggests, Gypsies were initially believed to have come
from Egypt. The Gypsiesa?? true ancestors, however, were a group of
people who left India between AD 800 and 950. The best estimates have
dated their earliest official appearance in Europe, in modern-day
Turkey, to around AD 855.

So, genius, what *is* the difference between contemporary Romani and
their ancestors?
That's *your* claim... now back it up.
I know my ancestors hailed from Western Europe, and I look enough like
my great grandfather to pass as his brother.
Which is not remotely unusual. So what? Lots of people look very
*different* from ancestors, especially when there has been intermarriage
between different "races". Look at all the black people who "pass" for
white. I, for one, see no *hint* that Jennifer Beals had a black father
when I look at her. Do you? Yet half of her genetic heritage (give or
take) comes from black people.
White traits are recessive; black traits are dominant. Genetically,
black parents can have a white baby who won't be able to have black
children. Geneticlaly, Miss Beals is likely white.
Wow, I've never seen her as anything but black, but she was living with
the son of a neighbor, and his mom was scandalized that he was living
with a black chick, so I was predisposed to see her that way.
Was she robbing the cradle?
No, they were both early 20s.
Oh, c'mon, you're supposed to improve the story. He was an eigth grader

But the racist Black complainers even acknowledge that the White
student was the better actress but that still doesn’t matter, a Black
gal should have been cast because… well, just because!
The character is half Romani - gypsy.  It doesn't matter what the
composition of old France was...
Who are White people;
http://english.svenko.net/svenko/gallery1/foto12.jpg
Not that a Black gal (or any ethnicity) couldn’t or shouldn’t play the part,
(its not a documentary, after all) the point is that the play was canceled
by the school administration, who knuckled under to Black racists who
insist that the role must only be played by a Black chick.
Idiot.
The Romani (also spelled Romany; /ˈroʊməni/, /ˈrɒ-/), or Roma, are a
traditionally itinerant ethnic group, living mostly in Europe and the
Americas and originating from the northern regions of the Indian
subcontinent, from the Indian states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and
Sindh.

I saw a news article on this issue. I'm surprised that any stage play
could get approved in the first place when all but one of the main roles
are male. Shouldn't all the women have been complaining about being
blocked out of stage time simply by the choice of play? Instead, it
comes down to a cat fight between two women over which of them gets the
single female role. It might be time to reboot GLEE so these issues of
'color conscious casting' can play out on TV.

I saw a cast photo of that high school's last play, LEGALLY BLONDE, and
almost everyone was white, so I don't think the mere existence of white
classmates is the problem. Besides, GLEE took great joy in being
politically incorrect with regards to many of its 'hot button issues'.
If they were going to get into hot water about the casting of Esmeralda
it would probably because they cast a guy (likely transgender) for the
role.
Side note: GLEE did have a chunky black girl character, Mercedes, that
constantly felt that she should get the starring role in every
production and used everything from fat shaming to racism as complaints
when she didn't get what she wanted.

Glee was primarily about Rachel and her two rivals and the inevitable
setup for the song at the end of the show.

Rachel herself was completely insufferable and one REALLY enjoyed
seeing awful things happen to her. Though with two Dads she was
definitely politically correct!

I most enjoyed Santana as the pushy Latina who always always
overplayed her hand and was disappointed as a result.

To be fair though for a show that was supposed to be about high school
classmates 6 seasons was more than enough. Too many shows push their
formula too far and it shows. I enjoyed the last season but the plot
had long since ceased to matter and was a self-parody by the end as
the whole "Britney Pearce" story line demonstrated.

So it's great if a black kid plays a gypsy but it's horrible if a white

Why do your arguments inevitably end in ludicrous positions?

I had to look it up. Sorry, never read Victor Hugo's novel (as
translated into English), but I should have remembered the plot.

Eseralda's mother was a French woman who had a child by a nobleman. She
was born Agnes, then kidnapped by Gypsies, swapped out for Quasimodo.

The kid's white.

I read some of the STOOPID in the rest of the thread. Oh my gawd, but
Indians are descended from proto-European peoples. Romani did indeed
come from northern India, but migrated BACK to Europe.

There's probably no such thing as a genetically pure Romani person as
they would have mingled with every ethnic group and community they ever
came in contact with, being itinerant and all.

It's probably best the show was cancelled, because if the show went on, the kid who was going to play the hunchback was going to get in trouble to for "appropriating a hunchback culture" or the school was going to get in trouble a second time for not having a real hunchback in the role.

So she's the most talented performer, but we have to ignore that and

"The young woman who was cast in this role has hazel eyes, blonde hair,

None of this makes any sense. The character *is* white. Esmeralda is a
gypsy from the Caucasus. You don't get more Caucasian than that.

They're apparently pissed that the actress both fits the role perfectly
and far outshines her peers in talent.

Not hardly. They're judging this girl not on her talent and skill, but
on the color of her skin. Pretty much the exact opposite of King's

the complexity is how much flak can they throw up to distract from the

Sadly I doubt that anyone could get them to admit that they were wrong
in their ideas. I get that some people think the right way to fix
issues of racial inequality is set strict quotas that force roles/jobs
to be given to people of color regardless of their skill but at least
admit that's what you are doing. Don't bring in all of these fake
arguments to try and defend your choices.

I just did a quick search for pictures of Romani and found this:

Do any of those girls look black to you? Even one? And what hair colour
do you see on the third girl from the left? If that's not blonde, it's
not too far different either.

Of course the budget is relevant, as it largely dictates the breadth of
talent available to a production. The premise here is that the chosen
girl was far and away the major talent in her high school -- whereas we
might expect a big Hollywood budget to scour the earth for a "perfect"
fit for the role. The real issue here is whether a high-school class is
a large enough population to be concerned about issues of "diversity"
and "representation".

A high school production typically only spends money on sets, costumes
and such things; the actors don't get paid at all. The high school
presumably has a policy that the actors have to attend the school; that
limits who can be a candidate for the roles, not the budget.

Yes, but the topic was the relevance of budget. For a $30m movie the
range of actual performance talent for, say, the top 10 contenders for a
given role is probably small. Thus, more attention can be paid to
ancillary minutiae, like complexion.

Man, you stand a greater chance of scoring Gold in the Winter Olympics
than you have of engaging in a discussion with FPP in which he says
something relevant to what is being discussed.

You stand a greater chance of being part of the diplomatic team that
engages with North Korea that is successful in getting them to stop
threating South Korea and Japan with conventional and atomic weapons on
a permanent basis than you have of engaging in a discussion with FPP in
which he says something relevant to the discussion and makes a

Do any of those girls look black to you? Even one? And what hair colour
do you see on the third girl from the left? If that's not blonde, it's
not too far different either.
Where did I say the character should be played by a black person?
You didn't. You just did your typical schtick where you introduce
something completely irrelevant to distract from your fellow travelers
who are causing this whole controversy by demanding the character be
played by a black person.
Awww... poor baby!
I notice there's no actual denial there.

I'm just surprised nobody just threw a wig on the girl and let her
play it. That's why it's called "acting".
Yeah, I somehow doubt that would be your position if Marvel had decided
to go with a white guy made up to look black for the lead in the BLACK
PANTHER movie.
Now you're just being stupid. Equating a High School production to a
tens of millions of dollars big budget installment of a franchise isn't
even in the same multiverse.
The budget of the production has no relevance to the racial issues
involved. If it's okay to put a black girl in 'white face' on stage,
it's okay to put a white guy in 'black face' on screen.

If the white guy were (somehow) the plainly far superior candidate,
then, yeah, it'd be *my* position. Of course, that has nothing to do
with "affirmative action" in casting a high-school play.

The third girl from the left, you idiot! I've seen girls with hair that

blond, of course, but one of the darker shades of blond.

is a gypsy from the Caucasus. You don't get more Caucasian than that.
And Charlise Theron is black because she was born in South Africa, right?

Back when I was in college, we had a student cause all sorts of proggie
angst when she applied for one of the university's African-American
scholarships.

Problem was, she was as blonde, blue-eyed, and white as Kristen Bell.

But you see, she was born of American diplomats living in South Africa,
so she had dual citizenship. She literally was African-American.

Of course the school denied her, saying, "But... but.. but... that's not
what we meant! We meant "black", but since we can't say "black", we had
to use the PC-approved term."

She ended up suing the school and the court ruled in her favor, telling
the university that if they meant "black", they should have said "black"
and as there was no actual requirement anywhere in the scholarship
eligibility requirements other than the student be "African-American",
the girl met the qualifications.

So many progs' heads exploded on campus that day, it sounded like the
4th of July. I remember it fondly...

Conversely, there was a black girl in the university orchestra who was
ethnically of Australian aborigine descent, but much to her frustration,
the university insisted on classifying her as "African-American" when
she was in reality Australian-American.

Of course if you go back far enough, we're *all* of African descent, so
the whole thing is pretty much meaningless.

Wow, those are fun stories. The problem is, you think you're making a
point on race but what you're really doing is showing how in the eyes of
the law how the words are interpreted mean everything. There's no way
you studied to be a lawyer, you couldn't have possibly passed those classes.

I read a comparable anecdote in the comments section of a website I
visit occasionally. The commenter noted that his work colleague, who was
white and had been born and raised in South Africa before emigrating to
the US, consistently ticked the "African-American" box on the HR forms.
Apparently, it really drove the HR folks nuts but they couldn't figure
out any way to make him stop because it was literally true.

By the same token, I'd be more than happy to describe myself as a
"person of colour" on any government form if given the opportunity.
White is a colour as much as yellow, red, brown or black. The only
people who have no colour are those who are literally transparent and I
have never heard of anyone like that. Even albinos have colour.

And if some bureaucrat asks if I'm white or non-white, I'll say I'm
non-white because I've seen paint samples in the hardware store and I am
definitely NOT white: I'm a beigey-pink colour like most people
descended from Europeans.

Romany are descended from peoples in the Indian subcontinent.
DISTANTLY descended. Their ancestors have been away from India far
longer than most African-Americans have been away from Africa and look
how light-skinned some of *them* are. (Yes, I know that was largely due
to rape of slave girls by their white owners and that's wrong.) I'm
guessing that gypsies didn't always intermarry with other gypsies over
the past 1400 years so a light-skinned gypsy is hardly unthinkable. It's
far less likely that a gypsy would be so dark that she would appear
African.

It was implied that because the character was from the Caucasus, the
girl was white.
That would track that somebody born in South Africa would look black.

Both statements would be dead wrong... as my sarcastic question implies.

How the fuck is it any different in Europe today? They're "the other"
because they're itinerant and therefore strangers everywhere they
travel, not so much due to how they look. Enlightened Europeans continue
to discriminate against them to this day.

In any event, they were all mixed ethnicity anyway, given their
traveling and mingling.

And now that I've looked it up, you do know that Esmeralda was merely
kidnapped by Gypsies, not born a Gypsy, right? You looked it up too,
right?

But was that because of skin colour and facial features? Or because they
spoke Romani languages or wore clothes that were characteristic of
Romani? I'm guessing all of those were a factor, not just skin colour or
features.

But was that because of skin colour and facial features?
They were endogamous and foreign enough that they were visibly distinct
from the population at large.
Mostly because they wore funny clothing.
And spoke funny.

None of this makes any sense. The character *is* white. Esmeralda
is a gypsy from the Caucasus. You don't get more Caucasian than
that.
And Charlise Theron is black because she was born in South Africa, right?
Huh? Who said any such thing?
No one. That just FPP flailing around trying to distract from the real
issue raised by the SJWs in the article.

It's called a comparison.

Esmeralda musts be white because of where she was born. (Caucasus)
Charlize must be black because of where she was born. (South Africa)

See? Comparison. Both are fallacies.
Thanny doesn't like it when his faulty logic spit back at him. Whenever
you do, you're "distracting" him.

Tell me, Thanny... who brought up that Esmeralda was born in the Caucasus?

Speaking to Fox News, the social justice activists said they are "in line
with Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message of love, unity, understanding,
and inclusion."
Not hardly. They're judging this girl not on her talent and skill, but
on the color of her skin. Pretty much the exact opposite of King's
philosophy.
I'll bet it has absolutely nothing to do with the color of her skin, that's
just the excuse they thought the school would listen to.

I am female and I was involved in some theater in high school, behind the
scenes. I *knew* these girls. My (still) best friend usually got the lead.
Until the sabotage started.

It's competitive and hateful and coalitions and alliances are formed, based
on whom inspires the most jealousy that week.

Yeah, I'm wondering about why they didn't go with that angle, but I'm
guessing it goes back to revenge and cattiness.

Don't be silly. It's not "whole swaths of the theater". It's high school.
It's not serious theater, it's kids playing around. Jesus, half the schools
around here still do Bye, Bye, Birdie. You're not gonna see Hamlet, you're
gonna see Lil Abner or South Pacific.

And Grease is very popular in high schools. It was hilarious when a
freshman kid auditioned with Greased Lightning, but sang the original
version, because he didn't have a clue.

If the students are serious about acting, there are drama classes.

You are thinking of Rizzo.

GREASE and ROMEO & JULIETTE would both be good examples of plays that
had multiple lead characters of both genders and would make good sense
as high school plays.

Yopu have to figure that a normal high school has 50 or so kids (50/50
gender mix) interested in drama club / classes / plays minimum. It
makes no sense to put on a play with only one main female character. A
play like that would best be left to your Catholic high school where
only boys were allowed in and one of them is willing to dress up as the
female character just so he can make fun of women.

Ahem.

As I've mentioned before, I played in the pit orchestra when my high
school did musicals. It was great fun and the musicians and the actors
all took it seriously. If you're not trying to put on the best show you
can do, it's not fun at all.

Serious theater? Well, it's relative to the talents of the kids.

Yeah, there are high school productions of Hamlet. South Pacific sounds
a little ambitious for a high school, but I guess you can throw enough
enough kids at it to fill the stage.

Um, Grease was about actual kids who were tough and violent, not the
version as sanitized for later musical theater productions and the joke
of a movie. It's highly likely to be a script that principals would find
heavily objectionable.
