[News] Matias wired aluminium keyboard
(too old to reply)

Those who still want a wired keyboard for their Mac may be interested
in this new one from Matais. It is a wired, extended keyboard that has
a spare USB port on each side, and (perhaps rather pointlessly) a
volume control dial ... and is half the price of Apple's keyboard. It
looks the same as Apple's aluminium keyboards, but you would have to
use one to see if it feels the same when typing.

The only hiccup for some perhaps is that there doesn't seem to be an
Australian layout version, but the US layout version will probably be
the same anyway.

Matias seeks to fill void left by Apple with new Wired Aluminum Keyboard
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taking some design cues from Apple's old keyboard line, Matias has
released a new Wired Aluminum Keyboard to accommodate those not looking
to replace batteries or charge an input device.

The new Wired Aluminum Keyboard comes in silver and space gray. A fixed
3.25-foot USB 2.0 cable with a type A connector provides connectivity,
with pass-through devices like wired mice able to be connected through
the two-port USB 2.0 hub.

Matias states that a volume dial on the keyboard gives four times
higher precision than the volume keys, granting 64 volume levels,
versus the normal 16 allowed from keyboard controls. The normal
assortment of function keys adorn the top of the keyboard.

The U.S. layout is available for pre-order for US$59 from Matias, with
shipments in late November. Other layouts available include UK, German,
French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swiss, Nordic, Japanese,
Taiwanese, and Korean. <http://matias.ca/aluminum/mac/>

Apple's full-size Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad retails for US$129.

Looks like there are minute differences in the width of some of the keys
(such as delete and backslash) that might make for a slightly different
feel.

I bet they do feel different. That would likely be a deal-breaker for
me. And that silly hidden volume control on the back seems questionable
to me too.

No one is forcing you to use it, you can still use the volume control in
the menu bar or the function keys.

I've been using Logitech's wireless solar keyboard for a while. The PITA
is that the solar cell is in a shadow when I'm using it normally, and
even if it weren't the ambient light from a ceiling light isn't enough
to charge it. So every few days I need to put it in a window that gets
lots of sunlight to recharge it.

I like its keyboard feel, but the space key eventually starts to stick.
I actually have two of them -- one with a very sticky one (I use it as
the backup when I put other one in the window on the weekend). The other
one mostly works pretty well, but occasionally the space key makes weird
sounds -- it seems like it's getting ready to go bad.

Anyone know how the Matias keyboards compare? They also have a wireless
keyboard (and it's Bluetooth, it doesn't require the USB dongle like
Logitech does).

<snip>

True, but the dial on the back might be too easily knocked by accident.
(For example, if you prop a book up behind the keyboard to copy-type
something.)

Logitech has got a new keyboard out called "Logitech Craft" which has a
silly "Surface Dial" configurable controller at the top.

Just as pointless for most people as that ridiculous knob input device
that was released a few years ago.

My original Apple BT keyboard suffered from terminal chicklet auto-removal
syndrome. So I just used the USB keyboard from my old “goose-neck dome”
iMac. Then for the last year I have been using the Logitech Wireless Solar
Keyboard K750, and it has functioned well without signs of any sort of
failure. It feels much better than the Apple keyboard (to me anyway) and the
price is reasonable. I have not replaced the battery in over a year, and I
have not had a solar charging issue, even under room lighting.

Never heard of such a thing. Is it contagious? : ) I've found my Apple
aluminum keyboards to be very reliable and long-lasting. And the key
travel and feel is way better than just about every other mainstream
keyboard I've tried. This sort of thing is highly subjective though; so
to each, their own.

Judging by the amount of disgusting filth spread all over that keyboard,
it's obvious whoever owned it never took good care of it, which likely
explains why a key is missing.

Here's my 10-year-old fully-functional keyboard for comparison:

Oh, it still works, but clicking a switch instead of dealing with a key is
annoying. However, not nearly annoying as a key cover which does not click
back into place.

Who the Hell are you calling a dog, you Swedish meatball?

If you persist, I will have to turn the Duck mafia loose on you.

Actually the damage to the keyboard was a spontaneous event. The key in
question just popped off, springing some 8 inches (some 20 cm) into the air,
and would never clip securely back into place.

long-lasting. And the key travel and feel is way better than just
about every other mainstream keyboard I've tried. This sort of thing
is highly subjective though; so to each, their own.
This one has not proven to be reliable at all.

Judging by the amount of disgusting filth spread all over that keyboard,
it's obvious whoever owned it never took good care of it, which likely
explains why a key is missing.
That is old pigpen for you. It hasn't been used in over two years, and I
had to dig it out out of a back shelf where it was wallowing in quarantine
collecting dust, and other detritus.

Very nice, just a slightly worn "A" and "D" keys.
Here is my currently in use Logitech KB, with a worn "A" key.

The Apple ADB Keyboard II on my recently-deceased beige G3 was still in
near perfect condition even after almost 20 years of daily use as both
a work and leisure computer. It only had some yellowing of the plastic
case. :-)

Aw, you did that on purpose! I do that to all my keyboards. Mash some
epoxy putty in there, press the cap back on, and put it aside a few hours.

If I don't do that, sooner or later the keyboard will start typing all
capitals.

Qwerty or alphabetical? In the latter case: Consult the Goog mother
company...

Those who still want a wired keyboard for their Mac may be interested
in this new one from Matais.
In Canada, I was able in July to get geniune Apple French Canadian wired
keyboards from Staples. (and they still had the english ones).

Looks like Apple dumped their stock to various places. It wasn't on
their shelves, you had to aske for it though. But they had it. Got 2 so
they should last me a good number of years.

There are probably still some around at various resellers.

<https://apple.insidercdn.com/gallery/22589-27504-1-l.jpg>
The new Wired Aluminum Keyboard comes in silver and space gray. A fixed
3.25-foot USB 2.0 cable with a type A connector provides connectivity,
with pass-through devices like wired mice able to be connected through
the two-port USB 2.0 hub.
<https://apple.insidercdn.com/gallery/22589-27505-2-l.jpg>
Matias states that a volume dial on the keyboard gives four times
higher precision than the volume keys, granting 64 volume levels,
versus the normal 16 allowed from keyboard controls. The normal
assortment of function keys adorn the top of the keyboard.
<https://apple.insidercdn.com/gallery/22589-27506-3-l.jpg>
The U.S. layout is available for pre-order for US$59 from Matias, with
shipments in late November. Other layouts available include UK, German,
French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swiss, Nordic, Japanese,
Taiwanese, and Korean. <http://matias.ca/aluminum/mac/>
Apple's full-size Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad retails for US$129.

have last 'bout a decade by now!

Thanks for the tip. That what I really want is no wireless and a Swedish
key layout. I guess that the Matias could work then whis Macally seizes
to do so... But I will be open for other options.

Hmmm ...

"Feel the difference.
German engineered Cherry MX mechanical keyswitches
offer superior typing feel and performance. Choose
between 6 different switch actions for something
that fits you."

Great ... except that since these won't be in any store near you to
try, how are you supposed to test the different switch options to see
which one "fits you"? Basically you have to pick one, if it's no good,
then tough, spend another US$150 to get a new keyboard with different
switches. 6 x US$150 = too damn expensive. :-\

Cherry keyswitches are really common, so you might be able to find other
keyboards with Cherry switches to try out.

WASD also sell a Sampler Kit so you can try all the variations yourself.

That doesn't actually help you to find which of the six switch types

At extra cost.

It's easier and cheaper to just go down to the local computer store and
test a few keyboards on display, and then buy one of those.

Just by chance and pure coincidence I've been in an european "PC"
streetshop yesterday to buy a couple of small things. Right near the
cashout desk there was a small "Cherry" testing device with all of the
six keys in a row (triggering a light each) and offering the customers
in the queue to "try and find out the perfect match for you".

I recognized it because I just read this discussion the day before and
remembered the word "Cherry"...

So I guess these little testing devices are delivered world wide to all
suitable shops and computer supermarkets and it's worth just trying your
local ones if you want to check yourself.

That would be slightly more helpful, but still wouldn't be the same as
typing properly on the full keyboard ... especially for a touch typist
who would want to know how it feels when trying to type one of the
out-most keys with their little finger (for example).
