No one is forcing you to use it, you can still use the volume control in
the menu bar or the function keys.

I've been using Logitech's wireless solar keyboard for a while. The PITA
is that the solar cell is in a shadow when I'm using it normally, and
even if it weren't the ambient light from a ceiling light isn't enough
to charge it. So every few days I need to put it in a window that gets
lots of sunlight to recharge it.

I like its keyboard feel, but the space key eventually starts to stick.
I actually have two of them -- one with a very sticky one (I use it as
the backup when I put other one in the window on the weekend). The other
one mostly works pretty well, but occasionally the space key makes weird
sounds -- it seems like it's getting ready to go bad.

Anyone know how the Matias keyboards compare? They also have a wireless
keyboard (and it's Bluetooth, it doesn't require the USB dongle like
Logitech does).

Logitech has got a new keyboard out called "Logitech Craft" which has a
silly "Surface Dial" configurable controller at the top.

My original Apple BT keyboard suffered from terminal chicklet auto-removal
syndrome. So I just used the USB keyboard from my old “goose-neck dome”
iMac. Then for the last year I have been using the Logitech Wireless Solar
Keyboard K750, and it has functioned well without signs of any sort of
failure. It feels much better than the Apple keyboard (to me anyway) and the
price is reasonable. I have not replaced the battery in over a year, and I
have not had a solar charging issue, even under room lighting.

Oh, it still works, but clicking a switch instead of dealing with a key is
annoying. However, not nearly annoying as a key cover which does not click
back into place.

question just popped off, springing some 8 inches (some 20 cm) into the air,
and would never clip securely back into place.

The Apple ADB Keyboard II on my recently-deceased beige G3 was still in
near perfect condition even after almost 20 years of daily use as both
a work and leisure computer. It only had some yellowing of the plastic

If I don't do that, sooner or later the keyboard will start typing all

in this new one from Matais.

In Canada, I was able in July to get geniune Apple French Canadian wired
keyboards from Staples. (and they still had the english ones).

Looks like Apple dumped their stock to various places. It wasn't on
their shelves, you had to aske for it though. But they had it. Got 2 so
they should last me a good number of years.

a spare USB port on each side, and (perhaps rather pointlessly) a
volume control dial ... and is half the price of Apple's keyboard. It

The only hiccup for some perhaps is that there doesn't seem to be an
Australian layout version, but the US layout version will probably be

Thanks for the tip. That what I really want is no wireless and a Swedish
key layout. I guess that the Matias could work then whis Macally seizes
to do so... But I will be open for other options.

good place to go. Lots of layouts to choose between, lots of key choices...

Thanks for the tip. That what I really want is no wireless and a Swedish
key layout. I guess that the Matias could work then whis Macally seizes
to do so... But I will be open for other options.

Great ... except that since these won't be in any store near you to
try, how are you supposed to test the different switch options to see
which one "fits you"? Basically you have to pick one, if it's no good,
then tough, spend another US$150 to get a new keyboard with different
switches. 6 x US$150 = too damn expensive. :-\

Cherry keyswitches are really common, so you might be able to find other
keyboards with Cherry switches to try out.

WASD also sell a Sampler Kit so you can try all the variations yourself.

At extra cost.

It's easier and cheaper to just go down to the local computer store and
test a few keyboards on display, and then buy one of those.

Just by chance and pure coincidence I've been in an european "PC"
streetshop yesterday to buy a couple of small things. Right near the
cashout desk there was a small "Cherry" testing device with all of the
six keys in a row (triggering a light each) and offering the customers
in the queue to "try and find out the perfect match for you".

I recognized it because I just read this discussion the day before and
remembered the word "Cherry"...

So I guess these little testing devices are delivered world wide to all
suitable shops and computer supermarkets and it's worth just trying your
local ones if you want to check yourself.
