Discussion:
Canadians now pay $1.31/litre for gas, as much as 2008 when oil was $100/bbl.

Except that oil is 40% CHEAPER than in 2008 at $60/bbl. So where is the money going? Taxes, which have increased. Plus, gas stations, which used to earn $.04/L now get $.12/L, a 3 TIMES increase. Has anyone seen their wages increase that much over that span?

Right now, we've got 12 cent differences between stations a few kilometers
apart ... anything between 1.18 and 1.30.

I did this formula is 2015 ... let's see if it still works:

Gas Price = ( (((Price per barrel)/42 gal per barrel + Refining Cost) * $
Rate) / 3.78541 l per gallon) + Flat Taxes + Overhead) * Retail Tax

Gas Price = ( (((Price per barrel)/42 + .255) * $ Rate) / 3.78541) + .247 +
.178) * 1.13

The price per barrel of oil is 64.94, and the dollar is at 1.29

Gas Price = ( (((64.94/42 + .255) * 1.29) / 3.78541) + .247 + .178) * 1.13
= 1.174

But since then, Ontario has brought in a carbon tax, so the flat taxes goes
up by 4.3 cents:

Gas Price = ( ((( 64.94/42+ .255) * 1.29) / 3.78541) + .29 + .178) * 1.13 =
1.222

You can find gas in Toronto today for about $1.22 ... 3 cents cheaper at
Costco.

Regionally, it's different. $1.31/L is likely an average. B.C. is $1.60/L but most of it boils down to taxes, fixed and variable. BTW, the dollar has nothing to do with it. The price divergence compared to the U.S. began LONG before the dollar had fallen 25% and was already established with the dollars were at par.

The calculation I did was just for Toronto prices.

Vancouver pays an extra 13 cents a litre in excise taxes, but they don't pay
provincial sales tax on gas. Part of their problem is a supply bottleneck.

The dollar has a lot to do with it ... everybody talks about the price of a
barrel of oil, and forgets that's in US dollars.

Alberta could prob'ly help with that. Putting a pipeline to tidewater would
let us swap for crude delivered to the east coast. As it stands it'll just
get shipped out by train: we'll rename it the FireBall express so they can
clear the track from Lytton tru Hell's Gate past Hope... to avoid a Lac Megantic
on the Fraser...

I remember, ages ago when another gas crisis hit the U.S. (1979) when singer John (now dead) Denver was crooning about saving mother Earth, they found he had a 3000 gallon gasoline storage container buried on his property for his private plane. Enviroqueers talk a good game, but it's all B.S.

A bitumen-loaded train wreck into the Fraser Canyon would really be an
environmental disaster. Far better to move it by pipeline.

Pipelines are also significantly cheaper, so we could afford fancier spill
remediation ... but hey, trains are green...

Like I said, when the price began to rise from a low of $0.90 to over a dollar back when, the Can and U.S. dollars were PAR, for MONTHS. Despite that, even if convert to Can. dollars and U.S. gallons, we are paying much more than Americans and most of the difference is tax.
