Poll Teheran for Upton?

I've been reading the silly trade rumors being bandied about
mlbtr.com, and there seems to be an overwhelming opinion that Teheran
is an untouchable, and that any package for Justin Upton would have
to exclude him. How does this group feel?


Myself, I'm salivating over the dream of an OF bookended by Upton and
Heyward for five years. At this time, I would be happy with any deal
that could get him involving any player not named Heyward, Hanson, or
McCann. While not ideal, I feel that our pitching staff could absorb
the loss of a Jurrjens or a Teheran without seriously impacting the
chances of winning the next five years. That gives us time to
rebuild the system, assuming it would indeed be robbed by the Dbacks.

Of course, with the extra money taken on in the Uggla deal and the
Braves reluctance to break the $90M barrier, the only way this
happens is with the surprise announcement that Chipper is retiring
with a minimal buyout of his contract.

My rosterbation dream:

3B R Prado
RF L Heyward
LF R Upton
C L McCann
2B R Uggla
1B L Freeman
SS R Gonzalez
CF L McClouth

Of course, this assumes that we can just throw young pitching at the
DBacks and not have to include Freeman or Prado. If they're
involved, things become a little more problematical.

As the roster stands now, things look pretty darned good except for
the minor fact that LF is a mystery when Chipper gets injured.

Well, since TINSTAAPP, I'd gladly trade Julio Teheran for Justin
Upton's age 23-27 seasons. Even if Teheran does eventually develop
into a great pitcher, he's not likely to be more valuable over the
next five years.

My question is: why do the Dbacks deal Upton? They have him through
many of his prime years for below-market value, and he's (more or
less) a sure thing. I can only see them moving him if another team
totally empties the cupboard to get him, and I don't want Atlanta
doing that...

I think the short answer is that they realize that the team is a
shell of a team. Haren and CoJack's departure, Young's and Reynold's
inability to make contact, the absolute worst bullpen, all combine to
make this team not really competitive over that five year period. If
you can get three star/superstar players for one superstar player you
might make that move to really start over on the rebuild.

And the really short answer is "they won't".

It's just a ploy to get people talking, and to get some real talent
if someone does want to throw it at you.

What if Atlanta opened their pitching cupboard, and offered Minor,
Tejeran, and Vizcaino? That still leaves Hudson, Jurrjens, Lowe,
Hanson and Beachy for next year, Medlen coming back in 2012, and
possibly Delgado or Bethancourt afterwards.

I honestly don't know what would be adjudged enough to get Upton.
Nothing, really, if I were the GM.

Oh, I can't tell from your post, but just for anyone tuning in, this
isn't completely idle speculation, Towers has actually brought his
name up as a possiblity.

plays and Upton is available for a ton of no-such-things.

My dream scenario? Everybody's healthy, Chipper's playing 162 games, all
starting pitchers have BABIP below .250, Uggla wins the Gold Glove at
2B, McLouth another one at CF.

OK, you have won, getting Upton for Conrad and Kawakami looks more probable.

Upton played some CF in the minors. He couldn't be any worse out there
than Melky.
