I know I have asked this before, sorry - how do I install/activate
tooltips for openoffice documents, including thumbnail, document author
and last changed date? We're migrating some desktops to 13.1 and
people are missing this feature.

Download the kde-odf-thumbnail package from the KDE:Extra repo. Then
check it in the Dolphin / Konqueror prefs -> General -> Previews.

Thanks, much appreciated. I can't help wondering why this package isn't
part of the standard install.

Second question - in the tooltip itself, how do I go about altering the
contents? We would like to get rid of "Generator", but have "Author"
and "Last changed" added. BTW, if anyone is listening, this is exactly
the kind of tiny seemingly innocent changes that really annoy people
and make them resist migration.

Well these annoyed people should rather look at it positively by way of
the fact that you *can* change these things, at least in the infinitely
configurable KDE. Imagine all the nice extras you might have configured
on a Linux system and which you might find no equivalent way to set up
under Windows / Mac. The biggest obstacle to most people in switching to
Linux is there own obstinate or Luddite nature.

In this case, there are two things you can configure. Either you can
simply right-click on the Information panel in Dolphin (go to Control...
Panels and tick Information, or press F11 if it isn't showing by
default. Then click Configure... You'll find 'Author' is replaced by
'Creator' and 'Last changed' equates to 'Modified'. I believe there used
to be separate configurability for the Information panel and the
tooltips but it seems that's now unified into one, so what you affect
for the panel is reflected in the tooltip.

You can also right-click on a relevant ODF file, go to Properties, then
click the Information tab and Configure... from where there are some
options, although on my machine I don't see Creator in the list for an
ODT file.

They don't want to fiddle, it's just a tool.

You're preaching to the choir, we've been a Linux-only shop for almost
ten years. Still, the plain user doesn't care, it's only a tool.
(we're migrating from 11.x and 12.1).

Peter, many thanks, you've been really helpful. I don't quite have the
options you're mentioning though - I have "Modified", but no "Author"
nor "Creator". Instead I see Generator (seems useless) and number of
pages and number of words, the latter I would like to remove.

others selected under Dolphin's preview options. Not sure if that has
any effect.

Right, just to get this straight. I don't mean to sound like I'm
treating you like an idiot, but I've realised what I typed could still
be misleading. In your posted image, the options in the highlighted
'Configure Shown Data' dialog equate roughly to what I get when I click
the green Configure... text in the Information tab of the file
properties dialog, as shown darkened to the left in your image. *But*,
if I right-click on the pane at the far-right of the Dolphin window,
i.e. the beige area underneath your thumbnail of a black hand (and
whilst having selected an ODF file), then click the Configure option
from the resulting context menu, I get more options in the 'Configure
Shown Data' dialog.

If you cannot get the 'Creator' checkbox from either of those places
then I'm afraid I don't know what's up. Maybe try selecting all of the
available options, OK the dialog and go back to it, maybe after
restarting Dolphin, perhaps it would present more, like pitying someone
who's licked their plate clean in a Chinese restaurant. Highly unlikely
but I'm stumped for another answer.

I'm trying to figure out how you come to have gaps in your grid of file
icons. I assume you've edited the image to hide something confidential,
else that's really weird.

My only other thought is that it could be something missing from some
language pack. I have en-GB installed. I wonder if the extra options
could have been mistakenly omitted from default or US English, if that's
what you have?

Ah no scrap that, I see your GIMP window in the background gives the
game away. The menu includes 'Colours', so you must have en-GB!

Yes, we normally have en-GB too, but I'll have to check this particular

Okay, right clicking on the item, then Properties->Configure is _not_
the same as right-clicking in the right-most pane and
configure->information.

Here I get Creator, Generator, Words etc. The document title is also
automatically displayed when one is present, good.

Final question - this click-and-point stuff is okay, but how do I do
this config with a script (hopefully to be called by autoyast at some
point). I'm sure there must be an underlying xml file somewhere.

nice to see, thanks.

and by the way with a pfd generated by libreoffice, the "creator" is...
"tintin" :-)

In the tooltips, I don't even see the Creator/Author for a PDF created

setting.

I'm afraid you're asking the wrong person when it comes to scripting.
Not my domain at all. Maybe best start a new thread if nobody else chips
in, or try on the forums for how to do that.

Strange that you still don't appear to have the 'Creator' checkbox in

One thing which is missing in this discussion is which version(s) of
LibreOffice are you (as in you and Per) running?

(Just for info, I am running version 4.3.1.2 which comes directly from
LO and which I always install manually whenever a new version is released.)

Just checked. I'm on the standard 4.1.6.2 that comes from the oS 13.1

I'm afraid you're asking the wrong person when it comes to scripting.
Not my domain at all. Maybe best start a new thread if nobody else

One thing which is missing in this discussion is which version(s) of
LibreOffice are you (as in you and Per) running?
It probably doesn't matter in this case, but I'm running whatever came
with openSUSE 13.1 plus updates.
