Hurricanes slow their roll around the world

Hurricanes are lingering over a given area for longer, according to the
first global analysis of their speeds. The study finds that the pace at
which tropical cyclones moved across the planet slowed by about 10%
between 1949 and 2016. Scientists aren’t sure why, but if the trend
continues, future storms could be even more disastrous — a 10% reduction
in hurricane speeds corresponds to a 10% increase in rainfall for a
given area.
