Yes, the Daily Mail...a trash paper for those who are daft enough
to be taken in by it.
If you are happy for them to remove something that others like would
you be happy for someone to take away something you like?
Be as it may, a private company is free to chose its product range
for sale any time it likes. Or is that in conflict with your belief
system?
Don't forget that the Mail was the only Brexit-supporting paper they
stocked. Now they have only Remain-supporting rags to offer their
customers. So the papers they offer are, surprise, surprise now all in
line with the views of the Virgin founder.
Why should I care?
Can't you source your mental poison from any other source? Has the
Daily Terror became such a rare commodity all of a sudden?
It is a big and wide free marketplace out there for the all-mighty
unwashed, isn't it? Go and find an other outlet! Or has Brexit-mania
already peaked due to conservative tardiness?
This is NOT about the Daily Mail or any other newspaper. (Speaking
personally I don't normally read papers except where they appear on
Google News.) It is not even about whether Virgin approves of certain
papers or not. What it is about, IMO, is whether we should go back to
the old days of censorship based on choices made for us by someone else
or whether customers should be able to choose for themselves what they
buy to read.
I am sorry, but whatever a private company does within its business is
NOT censorship! Specially not if there are plenty of other sources around
providing the product it chose not offer any more.
Or would you question for example the right of the Daily Terror, a
privately owned business to exclude news items from its publications that
go contrary to its unconditional Brexit support and call that censorship,
too?
It would be entirely another matter if a government agency or the public
service acted such a a manner! They have to be impartial!
Legally, of course they can choose what to sell. That's not in question.
What I was more talking about was the growing movement - which is coming
from just one side of British politics - to tell everyone else what is
and is not acceptable. There has been a journey:
free speech
political correctness
imposition
Personally, I would say that free speech is the only right one as long
as it is within the reasonable moral limits of the law. But we have
transitioned through political correctness where someone could be
criticised for terms used into a state where some are successfully
imposing their personal morals and preferences on others.
A good example is the Left getting right-winger Toby Young sacked from
being one member of a 15-strong schools board while they have an MP who
has made similar remarks, and they have a shadow chancellor, of all
people, who has spoken about lynching Tories - but is still in his post.
Their morals, their outrage and their high dudgeon is reserved for
others, not for themselves. And what ever your personal beliefs, if
these Lefties don't approve, they will be after those too.
