Discussion:
Virgin trains to stop selling the Daily Mail - not compatible with beliefs

Virgin Trains has stopped stocking the Daily Mail on its West Coast
route, saying the newspaper was “not compatible” with its “brand and
beliefs”.

The Daily Mail was one of a handful of newspapers the train operator
sold in its on-board shop and gave away to first class passengers.

But the firm cited the paper’s stance on issues including immigration,
LGBT rights and unemployment as reasons to stop stocking copies.

What do you guys think of that? Is there a lobby group seeking to impose
its morality on the rest of us?

Yes that will make it all go away now.

Be as it may, a private company is free to chose its product range for
sale any time it likes. Or is that in conflict with your belief system?

Don't forget that the Mail was the only Brexit-supporting paper they
stocked. Now they have only Remain-supporting rags to offer their
customers. So the papers they offer are, surprise, surprise now all in
line with the views of the Virgin founder.

Can't you source your mental poison from any other source? Has the Daily
Terror became such a rare commodity all of a sudden?
It is a big and wide free marketplace out there for the all-mighty
unwashed, isn't it? Go and find an other outlet! Or has Brexit-mania
already peaked due to conservative tardiness?

This is NOT about the Daily Mail or any other newspaper. (Speaking
personally I don't normally read papers except where they appear on
Google News.) It is not even about whether Virgin approves of certain
papers or not. What it is about, IMO, is whether we should go back to
the old days of censorship based on choices made for us by someone else
or whether customers should be able to choose for themselves what they
buy to read.

I am sorry, but whatever a private company does within its business is
NOT censorship! Specially not if there are plenty of other sources around
providing the product it chose not offer any more.
Or would you question for example the right of the Daily Terror, a
privately owned business to exclude news items from its publications that
go contrary to its unconditional Brexit support and call that censorship,
too?
It would be entirely another matter if a government agency or the public
service acted such a a manner! They have to be impartial!

Legally, of course they can choose what to sell. That's not in question.
What I was more talking about was the growing movement - which is coming
from just one side of British politics - to tell everyone else what is
and is not acceptable. There has been a journey:

free speech
political correctness
imposition

Personally, I would say that free speech is the only right one as long
as it is within the reasonable moral limits of the law. But we have
transitioned through political correctness where someone could be
criticised for terms used into a state where some are successfully
imposing their personal morals and preferences on others.

A good example is the Left getting right-winger Toby Young sacked from
being one member of a 15-strong schools board while they have an MP who
has made similar remarks, and they have a shadow chancellor, of all
people, who has spoken about lynching Tories - but is still in his post.
Their morals, their outrage and their high dudgeon is reserved for
others, not for themselves. And what ever your personal beliefs, if
these Lefties don't approve, they will be after those too.

The current train franchise system is a nonsense; it allows temporary
monopolies, not proper competition or, crucially, choice to the customer.

Out of the blue I just remembered a Southern Region train journey years ago.
The official plaque saying that flushing the toilet was forbidden when in a station, had the neat indelible addendum 'EXCEPT IN DORKING'.

What do you guys think of that? Is there a lobby group seeking to impose
its morality on the rest of us?
I'm pleased that someone is standing up to the awful fascist rag.
It's an interesting strategy, though: deciding to make an enemy of a
popular national newspaper....
Why? What have Virgin Trains got to hide?

Der Stürmer was also a popular national newspaper in its day.

Who said they had anything to hide? A national newspaper has the ability
to influence, in the same way Gidders is using London's local rag
against May.

It might have been very amusing. The Viz of its day. Hitler used to enjoy it.
Anyway Branson has just reversed the policy.

Customers adversely affected can always complain about it. The Virgin
customer care line will either receive loads of complaints, or none at
all. Who knows? :-)

Probably not very many. Virgin allege they only sold 70 Daily Mails per day.

No great loss even for the mail, then? Possibly even good publicity for
both sides in the right quarters? I've given up trying to work out what
counts as good/bad publicity, these days. I've had more surprises than
correct guesses.

Well, I presume that depends on how it goes from here. I don’t know how
much advertising revenue Virgin puts the Mail’s way.

The falling out with Virgin seems to be a tit-for-tat reaction to the
Mail’s anti-fare-rise headlines over New Year.

Publish and be damned, I suppose.

Oh, right. I didn't know there had been any. And I suppose Trump is
showing us that the days of 'turning the other cheek' may be numbered. :-)
