Any one else having this problem. I love the whole house PVR concept but why
does the Motorola PVR start recording a scheduled program 1 - 2 mins before
the scheduled start time and run for a couple of minutes after the scheduled
finish. The effect of this is that if you are recording two Hi-Def programs
and want to record another on another channel in the next hour it will not
permit it as they conflict by 2 - 4 minutes due to this timing problem and
that you can only record 2 hi-def programs at a time.

Any solutions??

If it's anything like the Express Vu PVR, it should give you the option
to change how long before and after you want it to record. One of my
PVRs had it default to a minute a before and a minute after. A newer PVR
defaulted to the precise time. I changed the default on the first and it
records right on the mark.

Play with the timer setting and you should find the option. (Or call
Bell and ask). Worst case, you should be able to manually edit any
timer, so after you set it, you can go in shift the time from 9:29 to
9:30 etc.

I spoke to Aliant and they indicated that there is no way of changing the
start time for a scheduled series and you can only extend the finish time.
The only way you can adjust the start and finish time is to do a manual
schedule which has full timer flexibility but must be set each week to
record a series.

While I love the all-access PVR and the quality of the picture I think other
aspects of the software on the Magnavox as programmed by Aliant is a big
step back. Only one favourites guide, programming time restrictions,
channels in no logical order. Am I the only one that feels this way??

So this PVR has no manual timer setting at all? If I go on vacation, I
can set my timer for a show that doesn't start for weeks if I know the
time and channel. You can't do that?

Pretty crappy PVR if it doesn't have such a simple function.

The other alternative is to record...oh wait...does Aliant TV have
timeshifting...ie show west coast programming later in the evening? Then
you just have to record the second instance of a show which has no
conflicts.

I just got the latest version of the PVR and it does have a manual timer
capability. The old style guide is gone with a new semi-transparent version
and the minimum number of minutes you can extended a recording goes from 2
to 5 could certainly cause a problem if two HD shows overlap while you are
watching a third. For those couple of minutes I guess you could watch the
SD version. Or not have them overlap at all.

Interesting observations though!

Are you able to get the feeds from all the time zones? That really
solved the dilemma of trying to record multiple shows from the same time
slot.

Time shifting is $5/month a bit more than Bell's $1 but that is a solution.

Sounds like you have an older PVR that records only 2 simultaneous HD programs. The newer and current PVR records 4 shows at the same time, as well as having a much faster processor, larger hard drive, and other advantages. The old one is silver, the new one is black (and smaller). I called Aliant months ago complaining of slow response time and a few other issues and they sent an installer to replace the PVR at no charge. Note that recorded shows on the old PVR are lost but all timers are preserved as they are stored on a central server.
