Ain't that the truth! I watched them during my alleged 'formative
years' and have seen little to nothing of them since. I hope I
get to see Kookie's T-Bucket and Poncie Ponce, among other
long-lost (to me) TV 'arty-facts'.

Thanks for posting this schedule, Hoodoo. I hope I have a chance to see
some of those old timers like Hawaiian Eye and Surfside Six. Been a long,
long time....
I'm also astounded on able to see episodes once again of: "Sugarfoot"
(1957-1961) with Will Hutchins, "Bronco" (1958-1962) with Ty Hardin, and
esp. "Cheyenne" (1955-1963) with Clint Walker!
I probably haven't seen them for probably 40 years (mid-'60s) at least,
if not longer!
"77 Sunset Strip" (1958-1964) also shown, (Sun. June 12, 6am EDT).
"Surfside Six" (1960-1962, locale in Miami) I remember seeing in reruns
when living in Miami Beach in the mid-'60s. Hopefully the episode will show
the late Paul "Mousie" Garner, who played 'Mousie' on the show. Started 24
years before "Miami Vice" also centered in Miami.
Just for good measure a funny episode of "Maverick" and "Maverick" had
one of the greatest theme songs ever heard on television!
You don't hear theme songs (music *and* words) that catchy and memorable
these days as we did in the late '50s until the mid-'80s when theme songs
started not to be made to be remembered!!
I still can hum most of the themes and sing a few words from "Sugarfoot"
and "Cheyenne" and all of "Maverick."
Those days were the halcyon days of Westerns on television along with
"The Lone Ranger," and "Zorro" (a Spanish-type Western), which also had
memorable theme songs.
Throw in a "Superman" (with a side-splitting dual effort from George
Reeves as a 'double' for Superman), a "Welcome Back Kotter," an "Alice," two
episodes from "Eight Is Enough," and even an "F Troop," and you know I'll be
glued to the small screen come Saturday and early Sunday with "Strip", "Six"
and "Hawaiian Eye" (1959-1963 with the gorgeous Connie Stevens),
back-to-back-to-back!
Get those stack of blank videotapes and your VCR warmed up for recording
for posterity some of the rarest tv shows seen from the greatest era in
television history!

Yeah, I hope I can catch some of these
Post by Rob Petrie
They could have forgotten Kotter, EIght is Enough (once is too much), and
Alice.

Well, the prints do exist. I have two episodes on 16mm and once had in my
hands a third one, the pilot. It would never be likely all these years later
for a
network or a sponsor to have prints of a show. But Warner Brothers has the
syndication rights and should have the films in their vault.

Wasn't the star of Hank named Dick Kallman or something like that? I seem
to recall he was murdered. My memory on this is really sketchy.

Kallman, who had left show business and was working successfully as an art
and antiques dealer, was murdered along with his business partner during a
robbery at Kallman's apartment. (The killer was caught and imprisoned.)

Your memory's pretty good. Kallman had a minor career as a singer and
actor, but by 1975 he'd given it up, moved to New York, and had become
an antiques and silver dealer. On 22 February 1980 someone broke into
Kallman's apartment (which he shared with his life partner, Steven
Szladek), shot and killed the both of them, and stole paintings,
antiques and silver. Twenty-seven-year-old Charlie Grosso was
convicted, but none of the loot was ever recovered. It being New York
State in the early 1980s, Grosso received only the standard,
eligible-for-parole 25-to-life for the double murder.

Pic of Kallman in character as Hank:

And here's his record album:

Thanks to TVC for the word on where prints of "Hank" might be. I
suspect the show is not as good as I remember, but that's generally the
case with these things.

Back in the day, the Warner shows were notorious not only for rotating
actors, but scripts. Scripts for "Surfside Six" would get a light
rewrite and be reused a week or two later on "Hawaiian Eye."

Despite all that, I'd like to see "The Roaring Twenties" again. The
Warner detective shows may not have been much, but they all had
terrific theme songs.

I'd suggest watching SurfSide 6 on American Life (formerly Good Life). The
way TV Land edits their shows for commercials, they'll edit everything out
of that episode "The Clown" except the opening and closing credits. There's
some terrific physical comedy from Margarita Sierra in that episode that is
not to be missed (hear me, TV Land? DON'T CUT IT FOR COMMERCIALS!)

Maybe one day they'll release SS6 on DVD...hopefully while the three living
stars are still alive and can provide commentary.

If TV Land still owns the full rights to show these old great series,
I'm flabbergasted by what reason they don't run them regularly unless they
don't have a current license agreement but they did so this weekend with the
old great WB series!

Ex: "Hawaiian Eye" "Surfside Six" "77 Sunset Strip" "Maverick"
"Cheyenne" "Sugarfoot" "Bronco" "Superman" or even "Eight is Enough."

They're just sitting there gathering dust (or becoming dust) in the
buried vaults.

Time to blizzard TV Land with e-mails, tel.'s, faxes, protesting persons

They're just sitting there gathering dust (or becoming dust) in the
buried vaults.
Many of the above mentioned shows do air regularly on the Goodlife aka
American Life Network. Unfortunately this network is not carried by
very many cable systems and is not on either of the main 2 satellite
services. That's a shame because this network has shown some pretty
ecletic programming over the past several years. I've also seen the
likes of "The Jimmy Stewart Show", "The New Dick Van Dyke Show",
"Man/Girl From UNCLE", and "Lone Wolf" being shown (although some of
these have been dropped).

Goodlife apparently has a deal with Warners which is why they also show
things like "Chico and the Man" and "Kotter".

And you gotta love the Color Honeymooners where Ralph and Ed have been
known to break into song at the drop of a hat while wearing some of the
most garish clothing ever seen on TV.

If TV Land still owns the full rights to show these old great series,
I'm flabbergasted by what reason they don't run them regularly unless they
don't have a current license agreement but they did so this weekend with the
old great WB series!

People in their 30s think The Brady Bunch is Year Zero in television. They
don't account for us older people who might enjoy some of the black and
white programs.

I want to see The Phil Silvers Show, dammit!!

And I would settle for a few runs of Barney Miller.

I'd settle for a couple of those good old shows even weekly, if we
couldn't get them daily.
Have TV Land take out some of the crud building up such as 'Mr. Ed' and
'Hunter' to make room for 'Surfside Six' and 'Cheyenne'!

Dear Rob,

WB is allegedly committed to releasing TV series from each decade on DVD.
I'd much prefer to see SS6, 77 Sunset Strip, etc. released on DVD
(especially with commentary from the likes of Van Williams [I'd LOVE to hear
him discuss the episode "The Affairs at Hotel Delight"], Lee Patterson &
Diane McBain for SS6 and Edd Byrnes and Roger Smith for 77SS) rather than on
TV Land with their 40-minutes-of-commercials-for-every-10-minutes-of-program
mentality.

But I will admit: it WAS nice to actually TURN ON THE TV and see "SurfSide
6" this morning instead of having to pop in a DVD taped from GoodLife to
watch it.

An interesting post script: GoodLife/AmericanLife had this episode of SS6
("The Clown) rated at "TV-G". TVLand rated the same episode at "TV-PG".
Wonder want caused that discrepancy?

PS - wish TVLand had added "Bourbon Street Beat" to the line-up instead of
showing 2-3 episodes of the same show. If they were that fond of a
particular show (e.g., "The John Larroquette Show") they should air them
all.

I just wish they'd pried an episode or two of 1972's "Search" out of the
Warner vaults. I have the eps on low- to medium-quality video, but would
love to see the show again.

Q: "Why do shows leave the TV Land and Nick at Nite line-up?"
A: "Most of the shows on TV Land and Nick at Nite are acquired programs.
These programs are owned by various distributors who license them to us for
a limited amount of time. Once a show's license expires, TV Land and Nick at

The only shows from the sixties are Laugh-In, Star Trek, and Gilligan?? The
only show from the 50s is The Honeymooners??

Stuff that is readily available in reruns like 7th Heaven, etc??

This proves their demographic and makes me realize just why genuine TV
classics of real vintage are not being shown.

TV Land is to television what AMC is to films. If only they were more like
TCM.

There is no place for vintage TV classics on TV. So instead of Sid Caesar,
Phil Silvers, and Ernie Kovacs, we can look forward to Rerun or Blossom.

You're wrong, quiz kid. Different situation there all together. They own
most of their films, so they do not need the commercial interruptions. The
pride themselves on showing uncut. And they mix older and more recent
titles without short shrifting on either.

I am perfectly aware of that, and was referring to those completely
meaningless characters who are being sought by TVLand's viewers rather than
three of the most important, creative minds ever to appear on television.

"Maverick" theme song (most of it)
[1957-1962]

"Who is the tall, dark stranger there,
Maverick is his name.
Wild as the wind in Oregon
Blowin' up a canyon,
Easier to tame.

Riverboat ring your bell!
Farethewell, Annabelle!
Luck is the Lady that he loves the best!
Natchez to New Orleans,
Livin' on jacks and queens,
Maverick is the legend of the West.

I get them on the former Nostalgia channel, which actually does cater to an
older viewership.

I just wish TVLand would realize that classics go back to the fifties, just
as TCM realizes classics go back to the silent era -- and not just two or
three titles.

It's better than nothing at all on a central database for tv/films,
Jim!
Since it is you, and I, and hundreds of thousands of others who
contribute to keep it updated, it is you, and I, and hundreds of thousands
who 'suck', To Tell The Truth (pun).
IMDb.com doesn't do it by themselves on every (tv) show and episode
ever shown since 1947, and the same for films since the early 1900s.
I've contributed quite a lot of updates to specific episodes on who
(and exact date) appears on "What's My Line? (1950) in the last few months,
to name just one series I'm especially fond of.
Judy Holliday made an appearance as the special Mystery Guest (3/17/57)
I just told IMDb.com which did not have that episode listed. Same for the
episode 20 min. earlier with Dr. Norman Vincent Peale when the panel was
also blindfolded.
If we don't do it (keep IMDb.com updated), who will?

Here's the bio on Sierra I just submitted to the IMDb a few minutes ago.:

Spanish actress-dancer-singer who starred in one U.S. television series
before her early death. A native of Madrid, Sierra was an accomplished tap
dancer at the age of four. She appeared throughout her childhood in
children's shows and later in nightclubs as a dancer and singer,
touring Spain and Central and South America. At the age of 20, she arrived
in the U.S. on a nightclub tour. She was a hit appearing on the 'Jack Paar'
(qv) show, but got her big break in
television when Warner Bros. executive 'William Orr' (qv) spotted her in
performance at the Persian Room in New York. He signed her to a contract and
gave her the starring role of "Cha Cha O'Brien" in the series _"Surfside 6"
(1960)_ (qv). The show ran two seasons, and Sierra returned to nightclub
performances. In the spring of 1963, Sierra was overcome by a heart ailment
and had heart surgery. After several months, she was hospitalized again in
Hollywood, where she died on September 6, at the age of 27.

Gotta agree with you on the IMDB. The TV Guide article on Margarita had her
birthday as December 31, not January 5. In the series, Mousie asked Cha Cha
when her birthday was and she said January (I think it was January 2, but
she may have said January 5). Her cause of death was complications from
heart surgery, they should've been able to find that out without any
problem.

I have a biography of her posted at TVTome.com.
