Have been running 14.2 since it became available. When the air temperature gets
up around 75F the computer will just freeze. Keyboard and mouse do nothing.
This did not happen with 14.1 nor does it happen if I reboot into Win10. If
I reboot back into Slack 14.2 it will operate for maybe ten minutes and then
freeze again.

A typical result of 'sensors -f' is:

Assuming you do not have a hardware issue, I would
clean all dust from the iniside, I do that every
6 months.

But I suspect a hardware issue, maybe your power
supply is failing? Fan not working?

John, thanks for your reply. But as I mentioned, everything seems to operate just fine in Win10 so I don't see how it could be a hardware issue.

Initially, please *do not* use google groups to reply to Usenet

First of all, clean your computer !

I had an almost similar issue (overheating computer) with a laptop
equiped with a integrated Intel GPU + a NVidia optimus GPU.

Overheating was permanent but did not freeze the computerbut I suppose
that freezing behavior is CPU dependant.

The solution was to blacklist the 'nouveau' kernel module and then
install bumblebee (search google for slackware+bumblebee).

What kernel are you running? I've had a freezing issue which I observed
with 4.15.5, 4.15.6 and maybe 4.15.8 - fortunately it seems to have gone
away with 4.15.9 and 4.15.10.

This looks fairly cool. I'd still clean out the dust inside the PC
though. In fact, how is it this cool? Did you run sensors on a cold PC
shortly after booting or was ambient much below 75 degF when you ran
sensors?

Inside computer had no visible dust except on fan blades. Experience tells me that can cut down on efficiency a lot, but whether or not this was the cause of freezing remains to be seen.

I'm running the "huge" kernel, Jun 24 2016 vmlinuz-huge-4.4.14, that was with the initial Slack 14.2. Trying a different/updated kernel is very much something I need to try.

I'm skeptical of it being a hardware issue because the computer seems to operate just fine under Windows10 (fine other than being Windows).

We may have had crossed wires - that was the opposite of what I intended...

What are the temperatures after it has been running longer, once the CPU
has started to heat soak? You need to run it longer and see where it is
getting to? You seem to be taking readings where whilst the CPU is
still cold - which is not helping narrow down if the CPU is overheating.

My PC's not been doing much, but has been up three days and I get:
CPU Temperature: +96.8°F (high = +140.0°F, crit = +203.0°F)
MB Temperature: +86.0°F (high = +113.0°F, crit = +167.0°F)

This is far above ambient, and much warmer than yours yet still quite

Have you had a very good look at he CPU heatsink? Quite a lot of dust
can hide below the fan - just below the top of the fins. I sometimes
unscrew the fan and dust between the fins with a small paint brush, or
hook about with a paperclip to make sure they are clear if I can see
anything.

You really need to look at updating this. It is vulnerable to both
Meltdown and Spectre and also some stuff that required kernel updates
late last year. It looks like 4.4.118 is the standard one for 14.2
right now:

I can sympathise with using a huge kernel if it avoids using initrd -
this seems like an extra layer of complexity. However, in some cases it
is unavoidable.

If you don't update your kernel often don't forget to run lilo, keep a a
boot disk / usb stick available etc.

Quite - it is a puzzler. A kernel update may be worthwhile in case
(unlikely) that you are hitting an odd kernel bug that has since been
fixed, and by some coincidence that has only happened to show itself
when the ambient temperature happens to be higher.

I can't think what the difference would be between 14.1 and 14.2 to
cause a difference in behaviour, but the kernel versions would be different.
