After starting out in the Mark II edition of The Hearts vocal group
Zell Sanders at J&S started putting out a series of solo records on
member Justine (aka "Jeanette") "Baby" Washington including this very
good bluesy entry where she's backed by labelmates The Plants who
already featured earlier in the contest

China Girl - Columbus Pharoahs - 7
Unsurprisngly these guys came from Columbus Oh and had but one record
under that name. They went on to record as The Four Pharaohs,King
Pharaoh & The Egyptians and The Egyptian Kings

T-Bone edges Baby for the top spot. Very tough for me to decide between the Pharaohs and the Swans. Ultimately I gave it to the Swans because I don't like the part where the guy in the Pharaohs imitates a girl's voice.

I think the Plants are backing Baby Washington. The same Plants whose record was knocked out earlier in this round.

Yes I believe it is those same Plants backing her as I mentioned in my
comments on the records

I saw them live when I was in audience of "TV Teen Time" in Dayton, OH
when this single was out. I got to know their backing band later. They
were pretty hot stuff with their dance steps during the solo.

4. Congratulations Honey - Baby Washington

The Pharaohs are out with the other 3 advancing. The tie for second could not be broken with the tie breaker, but it does not matter as they both advance.

We have our 25 records for the first round.
<snip>

------------
I decided to put them in order by number of votes each one got in its
round. Of course, this was heavily influenced by what kind of
competition there was in the individual round. It's interesting to look
at, though. For example, blues records did very well despite some
voters who really dislike blues.

Stay Out of Automobiles - Jerry Boogie McCain - 35

Poison Ivy - Two Crows & The Diggers - 33
Try Me One More Time - Nolan Strong & The Diablos - 33

Papa Ain't Salty - T-Bone Walker - 32

Let's Party Awhile - Bel-Aires - 31

Boot em Up - Du Droppers - 31

Bohemian Daddy - Marquis - 30
Take Me Where You Go - Elmore James - 30

Pistol Packin' Mama - Hurricanes - 29
Mercy Me - Lil Greenwood (Lamplighters) - 29
You Tried To Ruin Me - Snooky Pryor - 29

Pink Cadillac - Sammy Masters - 28
When - Flamingos - 28

Girlie That I Love - Cellos - 27

It's Funny, But It's True - Avalons - 26

Send Me A Picture, Baby - Starlarks - 25

Another interesting point is that Bruce, Roger, Steve, and Frank each
got all 4 of their records into the first round.
