Whittaker S12E06 The Diary of a Young Girl
Whittaker and her companions arrive in 1940s Amsterdam in order to visit
Anne Frank and see how she's getting on with her diary.
As they step out of the TARDIS and into the streets and lanes by the
canals the skin colour of Whittaker's companions Ryan and Yasmin looks
clearly out of place. Graham points out to Whittaker that it cannot be
too long before people start getting suspicious and they try to bunch up
around Ryan and Yasmin to try to conceal them.
The travelers make their way to the Opekta offices on the Prinsengracht
(Prince's Canal). Whittaker greets various former employees of Anne
Frank's father Otto Frank along the way, making a series of secret
gestures and glancing at the non-white members of their party.
At the entrance to the building a woman named Miep Gies greets them and
takes them into the building and upstairs to a landing on which a
bookcase is standing. Gies draws away the bookcase to reveal a secret
annex and they all walk through. Gies tells them to speed up and quickly
draws back the book case.
Inside is Gies' husband Jan along with Anne and her father Otto Frank.
The Franks are delighted to receive new visitors and esquire about any
news. Ryan and Yasmin have brought Anne and the other children who are
in hiding some marbles to play with. Whittaker talks about the progress
of the D-Day landings.
The days pass by and while Whittaker and Graham can enter and leave the
building freely to get supplies, the others cannot. During the night
Anne Frank reads out extracts from her diary. They fall asleep.
On the morning of 4 August 1944 the secret annex is stormed by a group
of German uniformed police who have become suspicious of activity around
the Opekta building. Everyone inside is arrested and taken away.
The Franks along with Ryan, and Yasmin are taken to the Reich Main
Security Office where they are interrogated and held overnight.
Whittaker and Graham who were on an early morning market trip manage to
escape capture.
Miep Gies is questioned and threatened by the Security Police but not
detained. She returns to the secret annex the following day to find Anne
Frank's papers strewn on the floor and Whittaker and Graham waiting for
her. The TARDIS has gone missing!
The Nazis demand Ryan, and Yasmin provide their identity papers. They
cannot, and are unable to prove their identities which are not on
record. They are therefore assumed to be British spies and along with
the Franks are sent to Auschwitz for extermination!
They are all taken to the railway station and loaded aboard animal cars
to be deported. During the journey they consider jumping off the train
but others who have forced open the windows and jumped are seen to have
been crushed or dragged and torn to pieces along the tracks.
At the concentration camp the women are separated from the men and all
are shaven and disinfected. Those who can work are put to work. Those
who cannot are gassed.
Whittaker and Graham desperately try to find the TARDIS which is being
held by the Nazis. They acquire fake ids and work as florists on the
banks of the canals while they search.
Ryan attempts to escape Auschwitz by knocking out a Nazi guard and
taking his uniform and weapon. He seizes the Nazi's vehicle and attempts
to drive it at speed at the barriers shouting get out of the way in
German. Bollards come up in the middle of the road and he is forced to
stop. He continues to shout at the soldiers saying he is an important
person and has urgent business when they demand his pass. They almost
let him though without inspecting it but one solider notices his skin
colour. There is an exchange of fire. Ryan is dead.
On 28 October Anne Frank is relocated to Bergen-Belsen where she would
die along with her sister. Her mother Edith Frank is left behind at
Auschwitz where she dies.
Yasmin is taken to be gassed just days before Auschwitz is liberated on
January 27, 1945. Only Otto Frank would survive.
Whittaker and Graham finally get back the TARDIS after the Netherlands
is liberated by the Canadians on May 5th 1945, but there is nothing they
can do to save their companions who are already dead.
Time can be changed by no man and no woman!
They depart, resolved to take action so such tragic events can never
happen again.
