[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS 7.9 randomly skips to the next song without finishing the one playing

I have been troubleshooting LMS 7.9 randomly skipping to the next song
without finishing the one playing for some time without success. LMS is
running on a dedicated Windows 10 server hardwired to my router which is
hardwired to a Touch and connects wireless to a Duet receiver. The
skipping only happens on the receiver. I'm controlling with a tablet
using Orange Squeeze.

So, I've updated to the latest build of 7.9, wiped the tablet and
reinstalled Orange Squeeze, added exemptions to virus and malware
programs to ignore my music directory and checked every setting I can
think of on the router (Netgear R7000). No joy! It'll still play a song
or two and then skip part of the way through to the next song.

I'm baffled. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you for your help!

Jim

Hi,

check the log file and the custom.convert

btw: what types of media did you try flac, wav, mp3?
how they are ripped (if lossy) as vbr or cbr?

You said only the Receiver which is wireless. I would suspect wi-fi
issues. Wi-fi is by its nature inherently not as stable as a wire. If
you can, try running the Receiver wired for a while to eliminate.

I'm going to suggest wifi problems, too. First time I ever saw this was
this week, with my Radio sitting on the fridge a few feet from my
microwave. Using the microwave caused songs to cut out and the Radio
skipped to the next one.

One more thing, I'm listening to wav and flac files only which were
ripped on Dbpoweramp. I don't do mp3's.

Have you checked for neighbouring WiFi networks on the same channel?

I checked and did find one neighbor that was on the same channel as my
Duet Receiver so I changed to an unused one. I live in the country so
there aren't many competing routers. I'll see if that helped.

Thanks for the idea!

I'm back again. I switched channels on my router to an unused one in the
neighborhood. I thought that nailed it but it still skips randomly. The
Duet receiver is 2.4 and shares with 4 other direct TV devices. The
router is a Netgear R7000 AC which is connected to a 100mbp service
cable internet connection. The receiver sits about 30 ft from the router
and is separated by the floor. This has worked fine for several years so
I'm really baffled why it's now skipping in the middle of songs. Very
frustrating!

This is a second system so its not the end of the world but I do like to
use it for listening sessions once in a while.

Anymore suggestions?

Jim

Meaning you have a second Duet playing fine on the same network? If yes
try swapping the two Receivers locations.

Try the troubled Receiver wired temporarily, see if that fixes the
issue. If yes you know you have a WiFi issue.

Changed to unused WiFi ch near by..... what ch #? Anything except ch's
1 or 6 or 11 may be increasing/causing the interference.

You don't use MP3's but try ripping one album as MP3 and see if that
plays through correctly on WiFi.

I'll run back through my system and what I've done to troubleshoot the
issue.

Issue: When listening to my system using a Duet Receiver which is
wireless connected to the router on the 2.4 (channel 6) side it randomly
skips to the next song before finishing the one playing. This has just
started happening the last couple months. It worked perfectly before
then.

System and troubleshooting: I have a dedicated music server (Windows 10)
with about 600 gigs of music running the latest (as of a week ago)
version of LMS 7.9. The server is hard wired to my Netgear D7000 router.
My main music system is using a Touch which is hard wired to the router
and works perfectly. The receiver is connected wireless and sits about
30 feet from the router and about 2 feet above the router with a floor
between them. It is impossible to connect the receiver with Cat5.

What I've tried:

Upgraded LMS 7.9 versions
Swapped the receiver to another one I have in reserve which are both
known to be good.
Checked Router settings and switched to channel 6
Rebooted the router and reconnected the receiver multiple times
Checked the security/Malware software settings in Windows 10 and created
exemptions for the directory containing my music files

That's all that I can remember at this point. I had time to listen a
while yesterday and it still randomly skips on both albums and
playlists.

I appreciate everyone's help! I just haven't found the solution yet.

...... and I'd still try my suggestion, swap out the Touch with the
Receiver temporarily. Make sure you direct the Receiver to use the Cat5
connection via the player menus.

If WiFi is the problem (which is odd based on the proximity and
environment of the Receiver) you may have to try a Powerline Adapter.

Some very basic WiFi tweaks to possibly improve signal strength and
reliability (many of which you have tried)

___Router Administration Basics (1-5 require admin access to your
router):
1. use a unique SSID name (name of your network/router)
2a. if using a G WiFi: set WiFi to G only (turns off a & b modes)
2b. if using an N WiFi: set to G Compatibility mode (if using G
devices)
3. change the broadcast channel to the least used channel near you
4. select a FIXED ch, do not use the “auto ch switching” on the router
5. choose only channels 1 or 6 or 11
___Physical (location)
6. router and WiFi antenna orientation adjustments can help signal
strength
7. try to locate the router as “central” to the home as possible,
keeping in mind length & width & height
8. keep router away from other electronic devices (cordless phones, ISP
modem, computers)
___Simple Maintenance
9. reboot WiFi router every once in a while (once a month is usually
sufficient)

There is tread somewhere about moving the receivers antenna placement
someone found out that it is dodgy years after the product was produced
? It is apearently has worse wifi than it had to , it's not fantastic
but can be improved .
It can actually be on the brink of not functioning ( the wifi card ).

Touch has better wifi than the receiver . So if wifi is a deciding
factor put the Touch where the wifi is the weakest .

But do try wired .

I've also ordered a Netgear dual band Ethernet to wireless adapter to
eliminate the built in wireless adapter in the Duet receiver. That'll
allow me to use the 5 Ghz. channel on my router. It may not help but it
won't hurt.

More troubleshooting updates.

I received the Netgear Dual Band Ethernet to WiFi adapter. I tried using
both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz. with the same result. I left it on 5 Ghz since
there isn't any clutter on that band in my neighborhood.

I then bought 100' of cat5 cable and wired it direct. Same issue.

I researched the most stable firmware for my router and installed it
followed by a reset and rebuild. Same issue.

I had saved an LMS 7.9 download from early July that I think was before
I started having issues. Same issue.

The Touch which is hard wired to the same port I connected the Receiver
to on my router works perfect. I'm out of ideas! If the Touch skipped
like the Receiver does, I'd suspect hardware or software issues on the
server, but the Touch works perfectly.

Does anyone have any ideas? If I need to sell the Duet system and buy
another Touch, I will. I just want it to play music.

Thanks!

Jim

I haven't read through the thread in fullest detail but there are
similarities with problems with BBCiPlayer plugin when playing on a
Windows server to Touch and Recievers (streams to Receiver
stuttered/restarted but Touch played OK) .

With the BBciplayer plugin - the important issues were the spec of the
Windows system and whether LMS was invoking "socketwrapper" when sending
data to Recivers (e.g. transcoding, resampling). What spec is your
Windows server (processor & memeory) and is "socketwrapper" being
invoked when you play to Reciever ?

The other side issues that can crops up was UPNP traffic can clog a
local LAN which causes problems for receiveres with smaller buffer than
Touch - solution is disable LMS uPNP / DLNA Media interface plugin.

Stupid Q for everyone's sanity. Did you redo, the setup process for the
reciever when connecting through Ethernet ?
I'd does not use Ethernet just because you plug in the cable you have to
do the network setup again choosing the wired connection .

Yep, sure did. I've switch connections and reset it up so many times
testing different things I think I could do it in my sleep now. :-(

Good question though...

Thanks foe the response. This is not a "real" server as in running
Windows server operating system. It's a bare bones PC I put together
after my last upgrade to my main PC. It's running Windows 10
Professional on a Gygabyte mother board with 4 gig of ram. The windows
10 was an upgrade from Windows 7 Pro. I have a terabyte WD "Black" hard
drive with no partitioning with a matching drive in a USB enclosure for
back up storage. This has worked flawlessly for about 2 years. I do have
a new back up Asus mother board with a new Intel E8400 CPU that I picked
up just in case I needed to rebuild it.

The only other software besides LMS is MalwareBytes, Windows Defender,
Acronis etc. I don't use it for anything except LMS duty. If Touch
didn't work so well, I'd tear into it and start rebuilding it, but Touch
works perfectly.

Now to plugins;

The only plugins I have enabled are:

Additional brows modes
Date and time
MOG

I don't have any UPNP/DLNA devices as far as I know nor is a plugin
activated for them.

What the heck is MOG anyway? These were all Logitech plugins so I
assumed they had some value.

I have no idea what socketwrapper is or where to find it. Is it a
service?

Thanks again for your help!

You mentioned that "The Duet receiver is 2.4 and shares with 4 other
direct TV devices. " TV which are network enabled are often DLNA
clients.

It is an executable (part of LMS in Bin directory) which is run by LMS
to spawn processes needed for transcoding - such as sox if resampling.
You can see if it is being called by enabling player.source logging to
INFO. It seems unlikely but you said you were playing wav and flac files
and LMS may transcode wav to flac to send to player.

The E8400 should be OK - the problem shows up with lower power (e.g.
1.7MHz) single and dual core processors.

I have the receiver connected with the Netgear Ethernet to WiFi adapter
on the 5 Ghz. channel so the Direct TV modules shouldn't affect it.

I'm struggling with the "player source logging to info". How do I enable
it and where do I find the log file?

Thanks for your help!

If there any DLNA clients anywhere on your LAN (doesn't matter if there
are on different wireless or wired segments) and the LMS "uPNP/DLNA
Media interface" plugin is active - a packet storm can occur which makes
LMS very busy and thus slow to service players.

> I'm struggling with the "player source logging to info". How do I enable
> it and where do I find the log file?

The log file will be server.log which can be accessed through the WebUI
Setting/Information tab

Log levels for different LMS modules are accessed through WebUI/
Settings/Advanced/Logging.

Find the player.source drop down and set it to INFO. Then click Apply.
If you restart LMS then log setting will be forgotten.

To see whether socketwrapper is being used do the following.

1. Stop all player from playing audio - ideally clear all playlists
2. Note time.
3. Enable player.source to INFO and click Apply
4. Play a problem track on a problem player.
5. Once it has played about 20 secs of audio - stop player.
6. Note time.
7. Enable player.source to ERROR and click Apply to stop log file
getting too big.

Look in the log file at the entries between times noted in Step 2 and
6.You should see LMS logic trying to decide how to play the track. If
you don't undertand the log - copy all log entries between start and
stop times into a text file. Zip text file and attach to a post.

I don't know if this will help, but I have had my Touch (using Wi-Fi) do
the "skip to next track early" thing on occasion. In my case, rebooting
the Touch (pull the plug, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in) has always
resolved the problem for me. I have never had to touch my LMS nor the
host server.

Maybe your Touch works because it was recently booted, while the other
device may just need a good cold boot.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response. The Duet has been completely shut down with
power plug pulled numerous times during troubleshooting.

No joy. :-)

The log just happens to have character sequences (like :-) ) which get
translated automatcally (by browser?) into an associated smiley.

OK log shows resampling will happen to your wav file using flac and
sox.

If transcoding/resampling with socketwrapper is the root cause of the
problem - then you need to prove this by testing with files that do not
need resampling or transcoding (i.e. mp3, wma, flac or wav up to 48kHz).

Interesting! These are just DB Power amp rips in wav format from
standard 44.1 CD's. This makes me wonder if I need to change settings in
the file type menu. Wav is set to play to native and flac/sox. I assumed
it would always select the default of native when playing standard wav
files but that could be a wrong assumption?

I think WAV is a bit special - LMS has two priorities send compressed
and have no loss in quality. In the case of playing WAV, this means
compression to Flac is OK and preferred if available. So try disabling
WAV->Flc and see if WAV is sent direct to player.

Ok, I actually set all the file types to play native and disabled the
other settings. Restarted the server and logging. It played perfectly so
far.

I looked through the logs and wav is being converted to PCM.

What is the best setting in file types? Is native not the best choice?

Thank you again for all the help everyone has given me with a special
thanks to bpa for hanging in there and doing a deep dive into my
problem.

I look forward to your response about what the best file type settings
are.

"native" just means the player can play it without conversion.

So next what is "best". This is debatable.

In LMS terms of audio quality WAV and Flac are equivalent (no data
lost). If a player is sent audio in Flac then it will be able to store
more seconds of audio in internal buffer and also take up less network
bandwidth compared to same audio sent in WAV so "best" in this case is
reduced use of network, less network processing (i.e. less processing in
player) and also more tolerance to network traffic/problems since more
audio seconds in buffer so more likely to give listener a good
experience.

LMS tries to use compressed audio when there is no loss in audio data
(i.e. same bits sent to DAC) so Flac is preferable to WAV.
Othwerwise LMS will try to use "native" format compared to a conversion
(e.g. TOuch canb play native so AAC sent to Touch but Receiver needs
conversion AAC to Flac - no loss in quality, audio still compressed).

Worst case convert to whatever format is playable - e.g for a SliMP3
player which can only play MP3 - AAC is converted to MP3 - a lossy
compressed conversion. However IIRC with an SB1 AAC would be converted
to WAV as Flac not supported and not MP3.

(sigh)I thought changing the file type settings was the silver bullet
but I'm still having the same issue. I've tried flac and native
settings. For some reason flac causes it to skip very quickly while
native will let me get through about 3 songs before it skips. I've
noticed it always says the connection has been reset when it skips. This
has been a constant in each log file.

When it was clear socketwrapper was being used for wav to flac and not
resampling - it would have applied to Touch as well as Receiver so I
felt it wasn't the answer to your problem.

The explanation for the skipping is as follows. To play a file LMS tells
a player to send a HTTP/Get so LMS can respond with an audio stream to
play a file. LMS streams this file down on a single TCP connection in
response to the GET. Once the TCP connection is closed (usually because
file is finished), LMS then knows player should be told to send another
GET to get next file in playlist.

In your case, the TCP connection is closed prematurely before the whole
file has been sent to the player but LMS doesn't know that so it just
tell player to play next item in playlist.

A connection is closed prematurely usually due to network problems. The
file is sent in packets from LMS to player. Each packet has to be
acknowledged. If LMS does not get an acknowledgment within a time
period - the connection is reset and TCP is closed. The question is why
was an acknowledgement not recieved by LMS: did player fail to get a
packet and so didn't send an ack or did the ack get lost between player
and LMS ? Either way data shouldn't be lost regularly on a network.

If I understand this correctly, this sounds like it's pointing at my
router or possibly a problem with the built in ethernet on the mother
board. What confuses me is my Touch which is hard wired works perfectly
but the receiver when hard wired still skips. That doesn't make sense to
me.

Thank you for the excellent explanation. Any further thoughts that might
point me in the right direction?

Thank you again for your help!

At the moment you can't say specifically where the problem is and it is
foolish to rule any part of the system out. So focussing on differences
may help point to source of problem.
As I understand it
(i) the problem only occurs with files (i.e. finite TCP connection)
Either you don't play internet radio or it doesn't happen with internet
radio (infinite TCP connection)
(ii) Receiver has problems but Touch has not
(iii) Problem on receiver occurs more often with Flac than with WAV.

The main difference between Touch and Receiver when playing a Wav and
Flac stream will be the size of the internal buffer. Receiver has a
smaller buffer so it will not have enough space for whole file in memory
so while Receiver will receive roughly the same number of packet as a
Touch, Touch can take a big burst in the beginning perhaps the whole
file whereas Receiver will be constantly asking for data while it is
playing. So if you have a "bursty" random type of network problem - it
will affect Receiver more than Touch when playing files.

There are three step I would carry out initiially.
1. Confirm that Touch is not affected by the problem by playing either
long single file or internet Radio for say 15-20 mins.
2. Check network configuration of the players - this is hard on a
receiver so the best you can do is look at LMS Setting/Infortmation
page. Just confirm that IP address and Mac address are sensible and do
not change.
3. Are players using static IP or DHCP. If using DHCP are you using a
reserved IP address for Receiver - if not what is the DHCP lease time
in the router ? if it is in minutes set lease time to very long - like
24 hours.

I've had some thoughts that might help.

This is not a new system. I've had Squeezeboxes for many years and
upgraded to a Duet system when they 1st came out. I later bought a 2nd
receiver so I could have a system in my living room as well as my
HT/listening room. During that time, I've had several routers from "G"
on up. My current router is a Netgear R7000 AC class. I've had it for
2-3 years and it's worked great with the occasional buffering issue on
the receivers. I picked up the Touch about the same time so I could
play 96K music files natively without down sampling to 44.1. The
receivers were always wireless and were on the 2.4 channel. It's only
been the last couple months that the skipping issue has surfaced.

I only use the Squeezebox system to play music from my server all ripped
with DB Power-amp in wav format. I do have a few flac but I'm a wav fan
so it's 95% wav. No radio or any of the many music services. I've never
enabled them because I don't use them.

To answer your questions, best I can;

1. The Touch will play for hours without issues
2. I can't see any problems with the IP or MAC addresses
3. The Receiver and Touch are both using DHCP. I hadn't reserved IP
addresses for them but I have now. That should eliminate any lease
problems.

I'll spend more time troubleshooting it tomorrow and see if this has
helped.

I appreciate your help!

Age of the router should not matter. I use a nine year old stock
Linksys basic router, only a/b/g capable. I stream full WAV's to four
SqueezeBox players all over WiFi without a hicup. Your WiFi environment
would be more likely the culprit, if that is even the problem.

I'm pretty sure it's not the router per se. Routers cannot suddenly
decide to take dislike to one class of device. I've had router slowly
die on me which resulted in packets being lost but it affected all
devices not just one type.

The issue has to be considered within the whole network and the origin
of the problem.

Have you always had this problem or has it started recently ?
If it is recent - what has changed ? new devices ? windows update ?

Have you tried the Receiver wired ?

You have talked about changing wifi channels but not reported the
results of a wired test that I can see.

The symptoms still suggest wifi interference issues.

1. I noticed the track skipping problem a couple months ago. However,
this is a 2nd system and it doesn't get as much play time so the time
frame is approximate.

2. No new devices have been added to the network.

3. I have automatic updates enabled on all of my PC's including the
music server, so yes, it has received Microsoft updates regularly.

During troubleshooting the issue, I did run Cat5 from the same
connection the Touch uses on the router to the Duet and it still skipped
tracks the same as when connected with WiFi. I think that should rule
out a WiFi issue. What baffles me is the Touch works perfectly wired
which should rule out the server as a problem. I have two Duet receivers
and I have tried both with the same result.

I have been playing music on the Touch for the last couple hours and no
skips. This issue seems to be just with the Duet Receivers, wireless or
wired, it makes no difference. I've tried two receivers and both
skipped.

I just thought of this. The one thing that hasn't changed during my
troubleshooting is the Duet power supply. Is there any chance that could
cause skips and log the same errors?

One more thought. I've been running on 7.9 and was updating the nightly
builds frequently until I started troubleshooting the skipping issue. I
then installed a version from July that I "think" is solid. I have no
problem rolling back to 7.7 or 7.8 if they are proven to be stable and
relatively bug free.

Thoughts?

But did you reconfigure the Duet for wired connection when you did this
? If you didn't it would have been operating wirelessly but with a
redundant cable plugged in.

There are other diferences between a Touch & a Duet other than
connection type as already mentioned. The Touch has a much bigger buffer
than the Duet.

You said this is a second system. Are you able to temporarily insert
another LMS in its place to rule out the server once and for all?

Yes, I went back through the setup configuration for ethernet when I ran
cat5 to it.

I don't think its an issue with the buffer since it worked fine in the
not very distant past with slower routers. I did occasionally experience
rebuffering but the R7000 AC router eliminated that.

I do have a laptop that I started to setup for a mobile system with LMS
on it. My wife is retiring soon and we'd like to winter on the west
coast (US) so I've started to assemble the basis of an easily portable
system. I don't have time to play with the laptop today but should be
able to tomorrow. BTW, that is a 2.4 ghz connection so that would be a
good test.

Maybe any of the LMS logging settings for network.* or player.* could
help detecting/confirming this?
Don't know which to try, though.

The "connection reset" log message is a confirmation of a TCP network
problem. Wha tisn't confirmed is which what happened to cause closure -
this can only be done with somehting like wireshark but in my experience
it will tell you a problem happened but not why.
With other equipment netstat on either end for ip and tcp stats would
help but receiver has no local stats.

I tested one of my Duets that had been skipping with the laptop I set up
with LMS and it worked perfectly with a 2.4 wireless connection.

This is merely speculation but I can't help but wonder if the Ethernet
hardware on my very old Gigabyte mother board is malfunctioning and
dropping packets occasionally. The much larger buffer of the Touch is
able to keep on playing and allows the server to reconnect with no issue
while the Duet Receiver runs out of music. Right or wrong, I have the
motherboard ripped out of my server and I'll reassemble it with the new
board and CPU I bought for reserve just in case this died. I got 9 years
use out of these components so I can't complain. I picked up the new
components really, really cheap just as a backup. I like my setup and
want to use it as long as possible.

I'll post the results in a few days and let everyone know if this was a
solution or another dead end. :-)

Thanks everyone!

Why do you mention 2.4 wireless, all Squeezeboxes are 2.4 only?

I was referring to the laptop connection to the network. Also, I have a
Netgear Ethernet to dual band wireless adapter that I installed during
troubleshooting so one of the Duet Receivers is on the 5 ghz band of my
router.

However, the test I ran with the laptop was a simple connection for both
the laptop (LMS server) and Duet Receiver on the 2.4 ghz band which
should be the worst case scenario for the issue.

Make sense?

All SB hardware internal wifi only supports 2.4 but it seems the OP said
he is using an Ethernet to Wireless adaptor attached with a Receiver
(via Ethernet port) to enable Receiver to work on 5GHz.

As you are rebuilding ask yourself if there is any good reason that the
server should be Windows. For a dedicated LMS server you will get much
better performance and stability from a Linux server. You could try
spinning Vortexbox onto the machine for example.

*Vortexbox LMS 7.9 music on QNAP TS419p via NFS* iThingys/iPeng/Tablets

*Office* - RPi -> Sony TA FE320 -> Celestion F10s / SB3 -> Onkyo CRN 755

*Dining Room* -> SB Boom *Kitchen* -> UE Radio (upgraded to SB Radio)
*Bedroom (Bedside)* - SB Touch -> Topping TP21 -> AKG Headphones
*Bedroom (TV)* - Amazon Fire TV (SB Player) -> Topping TP20 ->

Here's a quick follow up to my skipping issue with Duet Receiver.

The "bargain" mother board I picked up turned out to be so old it would
only support 2 gig of ram rather than the 4 gig my other board would
handle. It also wouldn't recognize my video card so I was without video.
So, out with the new and back in with the old. I ordered a cheap
ethernet card to use in it to replace the built in ethernet on the
board. I did try it without the new card while waiting for it to be
delivered and it still skipped. I installed the new card and everything
now works perfect.

I can only guess that the built in ethernet on the board was dropping
packets which the receiver couldn't tolerate with its small buffer while
the Touch with its larger buffer was able to cruise through it.

Anyway, the problem has been resolved and I'm happily listening to music
on both systems now.

Thanks to everyone for the help and great suggestions! I really
appreciate it!

Jim

Hi there,

out of nowhere since a couple of day I experience the same issue when
using google music plug in. Random songs are not played until the end.
LMS skips to the next track approx. 10 to 20 secs. before the end of the
current song. I already tried a couple of things which did not help at
all:

- reinstall of LMS 7.9
- reinstall of Google Music Plugin from
github.com/squeezebox-googlemusic/squeezebox-googlemusic
- Update of gmusicapi to 10.1.0

I'm using a Raspberry Pi 3 as a server and squeezelite clients on
Raspberry Pi B.

Any ideas what could be the reason?

If it happens with audio files as well as plugins then it is a network
issue.

If it only happens with GPM plugin then it is more likely to be a plugin
issue and a post on the GPM thread may be more useful.

Any message in log file ?

so far it only happen with streaming via gmusic plugins.

I did some further testing and come to the conclusion that it is somehow
related to the combination squeezelite windows and linux clients. I
remembered that I have put a squeezelite windows client in autostart of
my laptop, so that it was most of the time active. As soon as I quit it,
and start another gmusic playlists, the songs are played until the end.

When I start the squeezelite windows client after that, LMS still plays
song until the end. So the only remaining case when song are not played
until the end is when I start the play list with an actice squeezelite
windows client.

... still not a real solution to the problem but at least work around

I've been seeing it with audio files. The odd thing is that I recall the
days of getting dropouts back when my wireless network had hickups. Now,
the behavior is to skip to the next song.

Skipping is a symptom of a network issue. It's where the buffer stops
getting data for a short but too long period which the player interprets
as an end of file.

I started a new thread, but it probably makes sense to move it here.

I'm not even sure where to post this question. I upgraded my router
today to a Linksys EA7300 AC1750 router. When I used my Squeezebox Touch
for the first time it played a track for about two minutes and then
jumped to the next track. After two minutes it jumped to the third
track. I restarted the album and it happened again. I tried a Squeezebox
Radio and an iPeng equipped iPhone and they got through 5 minutes
without a problem. I unplugged and replugged the Touch and started it
up. It seemed fine for about 30 minutes (most of the 40 minute first
track) and then it skipped again.

I've just reset to factory settings and started it again.

Running LMS 7.8.0 on the server. Server is connected to the router by
Ethernet. Squeezeboxes are all WiFi.

And just as I posted the Squeezebox stopped playing. My Radio in the
meantime seems to be playing without a hitch.

Further update - I just tried using my second Touch and had the same
issue - jumping tracks. The Squeezebox Radio has yet to have the
problem.

Further troubleshooting:

I keep a back-up copy of LMS on my main (work) computer (WiFi only).
Generally, I do not leave that running. For testing purposes I started
it up, and redirected one of my Touches to use it. Same issue - it
jumped to the next track. This would seem to eliminate a purely server
issue. Next I connected one of my Touches to the router with an
Ethernet cable (and reconfigured the Touch). No problem - it played
without jumping. Unfortunately this is not an option for a permanent
solution.

The Linksys software offers me a wide range of configuration choices (as
does LMS) any ideas as to what might help? One thing I am looking at is
a "Media Prioritization" panel. I can tell the router to prioritize the
two Touches.

As mentioned before, neither my Squeezebox Radio nor the iPeng Player on
my iPhone has had this problem. One further comment: when playing Tidal
(short tracks only) through the new router on my Touch yesterday
afternoon, I did not have the problem.

All of the above music is at lossless CD Quality. The tracks with the
problems are Apple Lossless.

Using an app like WiFi analyser you can see which channels are being
used by neighbours and avoid them.

Struggling with this. Just downloaded the Linksys software as well as
"Net Analyzer Pro" from the App Store, but can't figure out how to
examine channel use. Can you point me to a specific app?

In the meanwhile, trying a different channel as the first was no
improvement. And yet - no problems with the Squeezebox Radio (or my
iPhone as a player with iPeng although less extensive testing there).

And as I typed the last sentence, the Touch jumped to the next track.
Is there any particualar log I should be running?

I just downloaded and installed Acrylic Analyzer on my Windows machine.
Found a channel that looked good. Tried it. Didn't make any
difference. Music jumped 5 minutes into the first track.

(And boy am I getting tired of listening to Elgar.)

Have you tried a Touch in the same location as the radio ?

Well the wifi in these things are not fantastic , it is always a slow
wifi war with the neighbours .

I had a recent bout with one of remaining unwired players , i reflashed
the router and moved it 10cm problem solved ? but these things do happen
with wifi so it will come back and bite me when least expected , its
typically an anual event , some niegbour changes thier stuff .

So i brougth out the power tools and a spool of cat5e cable and now one
less playr to fudge with .

Modern stuff like iPads etc have much better wifi and for example 5ghz
band

My Radio was further away from the router than my Touch. My Touch was
only 5 feet away with nothing in between.

Darn! 35 minutes into the Dvorak Cello Concerto and it skipped again.

Just tried that to no avail. My LMS server is showing my Touch with
100% signal strength. And right now my router is in the middle of my
living room for testing. Ultimately it's going to be hidden in a corner
with my modem (as was my previous router).

Something's gonna have to give soon. Either I go back to my old router,
switch to a JRiver/DLNA managed system (for which i can jury rig
hardware), or most likely, use my iPeng enabled iDevices as clients.
With the new USB 3 CCK, I should be able to connect them to my DACs and
keep them charged at the same time.

And it just skipped again. . .

Are you using them in the same room as the router and it's still
impossible to use an ethernet cable  or are you just testing

The wifi strength in LMS is not the whole story , it can actually be to
much and intermittent disturbances are not shown .

Recommend ch1 ,6 or 11 they overlap quite a bit so if 6 is crowded 4 or
5 is not far enough away (12 and 13 can be wonky with your radio don't
use) .Set g only if possible . I use separate SSID for 2,4 and 5gHz

Btw my router a linksys wrt1900 has some weird issues some combinations
of settings for 2,4gHz and 5gHz interfere with each other and it got
into some dysfunctional state , hence me reloading its fw with the same
version (it's already on it's latest ).

Did you get the latest fw to your router as delivered from factory they
have very old fw .

One Touch in the same room as the router, but across the threshold to
the room. No simple way to run a cable. The other Touch is in another
room. Actually, it might be easier to run a cable to that one (as it
would be parallel to my TV cable). Firmware updated automatically on
installation.

Tried channels 3 (my current choice after running a wi-fi analysis
program), 4, 7 and 11 (as I recall), and I currently have 2.4 and 5gHz
set up as separate SSIDs. But I also tried using the same SSID. Will
try switching network mode to 802.11g only. One other option is channel
width. Currently set on Auto. The other option is 20 MHz only. I
don't really even know what that does.

Taking a break from testing. Will take one more shot at it before
switching to another plan.

Touch and Radio are both 802.11g devices. And it should not matter
whether 2.4 and 5GHz have the same SSID or not, or whether the router's
nw mode is 802.11g only or not.

And as it turns out it doesn't matter. I can't get my Touches to work
properly with any setting I've tried on my router with either of my two
LMSs (one a backup generally not running). I also tried moving to 7.9
(and a few other things).

My short term plan is to use two of my iDevices with iPeng. I just
tested one with the USB 3 CCK into my Teac UD501 and it worked as long
as I used the power connection as well. And it even passed high rez.
Another $40 to Apple to pick up a second CCK though.

Medium term, I expect to have a contractor in here in the near future on
a large project. I can ask him to run CAT5 without making a shambles of
the room (as I likely would).

There's one other thing I noticed. When I look at a map of my network
(using the Linksys software) I see an icon for each item, but only one
for the two Touches. When I click on the icon, I can see that each does
have a separate IP address, but it strikes me as odd. They don't have
the individual names I provided them. I have unplugged one, which my
router now says is offline, but it hasn't forgotten about it.

Probably grasping at straws at this point.

Or try to use the old router (temporarily) as an WiFi Access Point only
and let the Touch connect to this. Some routers have a dedicated AP mode
setting, some must be configured manually to do so.

I have a mixture of Apple Lossless and FLAC files. I happened to do my
testing with Apple Lossless. They probably make up the more than 75% of
my music.

Because the new one is MUCH faster.

Not sure how to do that. I may look into it. My one attempt at trying
to run both routers simultaneously (as separate networks) didn't work so
well as the network with the connection to my modem kept losing the
internet.

But right now I have connected an old iPhone (effectively an iPod touch
as it no longer has a Sim Card) and an iPad mini to my 2 DACs via
Apple's USB-3 CCKs. They are streaming using iPeng as a player. The
CCKs do need to be connected to AC outlets or they will report that my
DACs require too much power (odd as my DACs are plugged in as well).
They stream redbook and 96/24 files without a problem. A little awkward
to look at, but it works.

Thinking about this (at least in theory to understand how it would
work). Should the old router/WiFi Access Point have an SSID that is
different from my new router (the one connected to the modem)? If so, I
may have the problem described above (new router loses internet
connection). If they are to have the same SSID how does that help me?

And why "(temporarily)"?

Linksys says my old router (Linksys E2500) can be configured manually as
a WAP.

I appreciate your assistance. Sometimes the learning process is a
reward in itself (which can pay future dividends).

Just to see if that resolves the issue, a diagnosis tool. If it does
work then your problem is within the new routers settings.
But, yes, you can keep it on your network. But make sure you read up on
how to run two routers on one network.

I've pretty much played with every relevant setting I can think of on
the new router. Channels, network mode, media prioritization - placing
the Touches first, separating 2.4 Ghz from 5 Ghz. See my previous
posts. Everything on the system works except for the two Touches. If
there's something else I should try, I will.

I will try to get info on two routers on one network. I assume this
means using the same SSID for both routers? If so, how do I get the
Squeezeboxes to connect to the old router?

For a first test use a different SSID so you can make sure that the
Touch connects to the AP.

If everything would be working fine then the SSIDs could even be
identical and the AP would just extend the WiFi coverage in your home -
and with better performance than a WiFi Repeater. Of course the AP and
the new router should span a single network (which they do when you
switch your old router to Bridge mode as it's called in the Linksys
manual, I think).

I meant "(temporarily)" exactly as explained by toby10.

I tried the first step several days ago. I think I did it correctly. I
ran an Ethernet cable from the old router's internet connection port to
a non-internet connection port on the new router. The old router had
been set up with a different network name (although both used IP
192.168.1.1 for their respective networks). I was able to get both
Touches (via Wi-Fi) and my LMS server computer (via Ethernet) connected
on the old network using that name. My problem was that the new router
kept dropping the Internet connection intermittently. I don't think it
was a channel issue. I examined channel usage with Acrylic and
configured the new router to use channel 3, which didn't seem to get
much use. My old router was using 6 as I recall.

That introduces double NAT and isn't the way top do it.

Connect to web admin on new router.
Make a note of its internal IP address and the DHCP range it operates
for clients.
For example it could be 192.168.1.1
The DHCP range could be 50 clients starting at 192.168.1.100

With the old router disconnected from anything else connect a laptop to
one of the LAN ports on the old router.
You need to change the routers IP address to be say
192.168.1.2
Then you need to switch off DHCP on the old router.
It will probably reboot and you will lose connection - dont panic.

Now plug the old router into the new router - use LAN ports on both.
IMPORTANT

Connect your laptop to the NEW router either by Wif-Fi or LAN port and
try connecting to the web admin at http://192.168.1.2 - if it works you
have just set up an additional AP on your existing network

If 1921.68.1.1 is not correct for your router adjust accordingly in all
places.

You need to set up a different SSID on the old router and point the
Touch's at that.
What should then happen is that a Touch will connect to the SSID on the
old router but gets its IP from the DHCP of the new router.

Got it. And should my LMS server computer connect to the "Touch" SSID?
That server is currently connected to the new router with Ethernet.

It would be a good idea once everything is working to give your LMS
server a static IP. Investigate whether DHCP reservation is possible on
your new router.
