I'm going down a similar path.
I would appreciate some information.
Post by DamianThe only very minor quirk is that I have just had my DSL
go down for the first time in years now, quite literally.
Don't tell me you are with iinet!!!
Yep, but its Telstra resold.
Post by DamianAnd iinet make a complete fucking dogs breakfast
of working out where the problem was yesterday.
Probably their tech goons are too incompetent to locate the loose wires
in their DSLAM.
Nar, its Telstra's DSLAM and they appear to have been
jerked around by Telstra. It will be interesting to see what
the fault turns out to be, it went down again after it had
come up for half a day, and is still down. I'm using the
3G hotspot now.
The ADSL is fine, it just can't get the PPP up and when
it does eventually get it up, it can work fine for half a
day, but if it drops again, it doesnt get it up again.
Thats with two completely different modems, so it has
to be the line, which sounds fine, or the DSLAM line card.
The Telstra fella did show up yesterday early and found it
working, rang me to check that it was working, and just yawned
when I said it was fine. They now have an appointment next Wednesday
morning, so it will be interesting to see what happens then.
Just a minor nuisance now that the 3G wifi hotspot is working fine.
Only real downside is that it runs the iphone 5 battery
down pretty fast so you need to charge it daily or faster.
Post by DamianSo I decided that I might as well just use the wifi hotspot
that the iphones can do trivially to provide a net service
while the DSL was down instead of using dialup.
Only to find the that amaysim doesnt support
the wifi hotspot with iphones, and just iphones.
Did you ask they why?
Yeah, but he basically just waffled. They appear to have found
it too hard to support judging by the comments on whirlfool.
Post by DamianSo I got them to cancel the 1G data pack that I had got
to use for the wifi hotspot. They were happy to do that.
So I got a telstra ipad plan on a nano sim to use instead, mainly
because I could get one locally. I can't with Kogan or Aldi.
You could've ordered online.
Not with the Aldi, but I can get someone
I know well to get one for me and post it.
Post by DamianObviously, you wanted it straightaway.
Yeah, particularly when I had no idea how long it would
be down for. It did come up just minutes after I got the
hotspot working on the laptop. But then went down
again the next day so it was certainly worth getting.
Wont ever have to fart around with dialup again.
Post by DamianThen farted around trying to get that to work with the laptop
which still runs XP. Still haven't managed to get that to work
yet. Works fine with the N95 8GB so its some quirk of XP.
Only to find that the DSL came back within
minutes of discovering that the N95 works fine.
So I have just pissed $30 against the wall on the Telstra
sim which will run out in 30 days during which I am most
unlikely to see the DSL go down again.
You never know.
In fact it went down again the next day.
Post by DamianI hope the iinet DSL you got ain't the Naked DSL.
Nar, it isnt offered here, its just Telstra resold here.
Post by DamianI've bought $30 simcard from Telstra while ago.
I fucked that up too. Since I didnt have any net access,
I rang the local Telstra shop to see what was the best
value as a fill in while the DSL was down. She rightly
said that the $30 sim put on an ipad plan was the
best value in that situation, give you 3G for $30.
Went into BigW to see what they had instead. Found
that they were doing a special on those SIMs at half
price, including the nano sim the iphone 5 uses.
The droid at that counter didnt know you could put
it on an ipad plan, so I got the $30 one from the Telstra
shop instead. I could have in fact got the $15 sim from
BigW and then got Telstra to put it on an ipad plan on
the phone when authorising it myself.
Post by DamianThen returned it without using it. The bloke at Woolies wanted to know
why I want to return it. He was the manager. Told him to mind his own
business about that. Then he said there's nothing he can do about
government getting hold of my information.
He's right.
Post by DamianTold the idiot, they have all of my info already going back to
generations, perhaps.
And get it again when you authorise a sim online anyway.
Post by DamianMoral of the story is that, use Telstra stuff directly, only when you
don't have any other choice.
Yeah, I didnt really and paid twice the price for it.
Post by DamianStill, iinet will give me some compensation for fucking up
the diagnosis of the problem so spectacularly, so that should
pay for something like half of that so its not really any big deal.
Good luck with that compensation.
I've had it before with the Turk's system that they stuffed up too.
Post by DamianI dumped iinet over four years ago for good.
They're usually pretty decent, and its not too clear what happened
that time, it looks rather like Telstra was the main culprit.
Post by DamianBeen with TPG so long, not a single line drop or shit that I have to deal
with, and that's in addition to giving me a dirt cheap DSL deal.
Yeah, none of the people I have suggested
use it have had any problems.
I haven't myself so far mainly because of the
week or more with no DSL to change to them
because it isnt possible to fast churn to them.
Not a problem now that I have the 3G wifi hotspot.
In fact I may well do it now while I am
still in the 30days that the $30 lasts for.
Post by DamianRecently found even better deal with Exetel,
Yeah, I have suggested some use that and they
haven't had any complaints about the result they got.
They change their plans as often as they change their
shirts which is the main downside from my point of view
and no 24/7 support either. I keep pretty weird hours,
start a lot earlier than almost anyone I know, so it would
be a pain in the arse to get up and find no DSL and not
even able to report it for hours. And its not a 13 number
either. No big deal when the voip is working but once
the DSL isnt, it would have been. No problem now with
the voip on the iphone now tho.
Post by Damianbut not worth switching, just to save six bucks a month.
Yeah, thats the other reason I haven't changed from iinet.
I've had no confidence that exetel would last as long
and iinet is doing a lot better than TPG financially too.
Post by DamianTPG has been great for me so far. They've come a long way from their
shitty old days of bad customer service.
Yeah, but still not as good as iinet IMO.
Post by Damianiinet only got soft speaking Perth british immigrants to butter you up to
sign up with them with their contracts as long as your lifespan.
No they dont. The Turks only had leaving fee if they left in less than
6 months and when they wanted to suspend after 5 months when
they all pissed off in a single 747 back to Turkey to marry off the
second youngest, they just let it run for a month longer without
being used to avoid paying even that.
Post by DamianMay be you could try TPG(they have very short contracts like six months),
So does iinet.
Post by Damianif they have a DSLAM in your area.
They do. iinet doesnt. In fact TPG and Telstra are the only ones that do.
Post by DamianMy old lady isn't in an exchange where they have a TPG DSLAM, but she
still gets good speeds and a better deal than iinet.
Yeah, it is better value than iinet, but not by all that much.
Post by DamianWhat pisses me off is that she clocks 20Mbps in a regional exchange where
I clocked 16Mpbs in a suburban exchange. :-)
You could slash your wrists |-)
Post by DamianPost by DamianPost by Rod SpeedPost by DamianOr is it possible Kogan might have stuffed it up for me by sending a
non 3G simcard?!!!
No, but you can tell your phone to use 2G when 3G is available.
Yes, I know. But, I'm pretty sure I did it right.
It's pretty straighforward with this android shit.
Yeah, most likely its some quirk of the dual sim android phone.
Post by DamianPost by Rod SpeedPost by DamianPost by PetzlThe best deal is Aldi's for prepay Telstra data, their price is $15
for 3 gig and don't expire until it's used or 365 days whatever
comes first.
Where does it say that $15 prepay deal comes with 3 Gig?!!!!
https://www.aldimobile.com.au/plans#mobileinternet
He stuffed up, its 2G
Even worse than that.. It's only 300MB for that $15.
Yeah, but I was talking about the addon data pack, not that 300MB for $15.
Post by DamianIt's that it can last for a year. That's the advantage.
No way I can just be happy with a measly 300MB for a whole year.
Probably good for my grand dad.
Yeah, almost everyone would have to add data packs.
Post by DamianPost by Rod SpeedPost by DamianCharges are 5 cents a megbyte.
It says it expires in 365 days.
Expiry date wise ALDI deal is good, but not the data cost though.
Still better than $10/G
Depends. If you are very measly web user, then it's good.
Just surfing on ebay and bidding, etc consumes heaps of MBs before you
know it.
Dunno, I do quite a bit of that and still stay under the 1G per month.
Post by DamianPost by Rod SpeedPost by DamianPost by PetzlSeems better than Amaysim $10 a gig expires 30 Days
Kogan and Savvytel has the same deal. Savvytel uses Optus 3G network.
