It's not as breathlessly dramatic as mj's Blog made it out to be,
however; Sam didn't make a big deal of it. This is the NY Post
interview that mj was referring to:

I think that's going to be bigger than you think. Remember that the network and sponsors prevented two openly gay champions.

I thought of that. (You're referring to Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert I
presume). But Disney's ABC is far more LGBT-friendly than Rupert
Murcoch's Fox's was. In fact, in the past couple of seasons I thought
that Idol's positive treatment of talented drag queen Ada Vox (Adam
Sanders) and openly gay finalists Jurnee and Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon was
pretty remarkable considering the show's past pretense that gay men
and women simply don't exist.
But having said that, I wonder if Just Sam still would have won if it
had come out that she was gay before the public voting.

Rupert Murdock, not Rupert Mucoch. Freudian slip? ;-)

Agreed, entirely. Doesn't change the fact, though, that this could be a far bigger moment than some give credit for -- that an LGBT was finally permitted to win the title.

Clay only got as far as he did because he hid it enough. Adam was just too damn good. (Which see where he is now.)

No chance in Hell.

Question for you Zob, do you feel society in general accepts a gay female more than a gay male or would you say it's pretty much the same for both?

That's a really good question LA, and I don't have a good answer. My
instinct is to say yes, lesbians are more accepted than gay men. But I
would have to admit that I'm seeing it through biased eyes as a
68-year-old gay man who had to pretend to be someone else his whole
life. I honestly don't know how many gay women feel the same way.
Have most older gay women also pretended to be straight their whole
lives to avoid persecution and social pressure ? I just don't know.
