Skimble appears to be a "thing." It seems that it is an exercise
programme on the web so I wonder if it has bots or web crawlers
looking for places to promote itself? One of the forums I participate
in elsewhere has a very handy panel showing who is online at any given
time and very often there are more bots crawing over the site than
human participants.

I never thought to Google it before, but happily was led to Skimbleshanks
by TS Eliot:

There's a whisper down the line at 11.39
When the Night Mail's ready to depart,
Saying "Skimble where is Skimble
has he gone to hunt the thimble?
We must find him or the train can't start."

When the Night Mail's ready to depart,
Saying "Skimble where is Skimble

All the guards and all the porters
And the Station Master's daughters...

I loved Old Possum when I were nobbut a nipper. I once recited
Skimbleshanks at a school poetry thing when I was 10. In those days I
just knew it because I'd read it quite a few times and really liked it.
(I thought the lines "There's a funny little basin/You're supposed to
wash your face in" were hilarious.) I could do most of Macavity, too.
And I was quietly pleased with myself a few years later for recognising
the source of (misspelled) name Mungo Jerry when In The Summertime came
out.

Those were the days when stuff just seemed to be in my brain - like the
lyrics to pop songs - without my having to make any real effort. Quite
a lot of it is still there. How very unlike the present life of my
memory, which often can't retain a simple name for more than a few
seconds nowadays.

I have carefully avoided both the musical and the film, on the basis
that they can't possibly be as good as the original.

I gather the film was an absolute turkey, but the musical - which I've
not _seen_ (highly unlikely to) - seen as an entity in its own right,
_not_ a toilets* - generated _a few_ nice pieces: "Memory" of course
springs to mind, and _some_ of the others. Some might have even brought
the words to a wider audience (the "Hooked on Classics" argument).

I saw the musical in London many years ago, with daughters when young.
We all enjoyed it. It was in Drury Lane with a clever revolving stage.
I have a feeling it was Elaine Page then was the Judi Dench role. Not
seen the film.

Seen the stage show a couple of times. I have a feeling that at one
point it was intended that JD would take the stage role but it did not
happen so when offered the film version she took it.

Those were the days when stuff just seemed to be in my brain - like the
lyrics to pop songs - without my having to make any real effort.  Quite
a lot of it is still there.  How very unlike the present life of my
memory, which often can't retain a simple name for more than a few
seconds nowadays.
IKWYM. I used to do mental arithmetic to help to me to sleep, eg
squaring our telephone number. To this day, sadly, I know that 258² is
66564 but have to work out 256². PS 2021 = 43*47 because 2025=81*25.

More because 2025 = 45*45 (81*25 = 9^2 * 5^2 = (9*5)^2

2021 = 2025 - 4 = 45^2 - 4 = (45 + 2) * (45 - 2) [difference of two squares]

What's nice is that it's a product of adjacent primes.

Being in electronics/computing, I have no trouble with 256² - 65536, or
64K. I'd have to work out 258², though, and probably struggle to do it
in my head.

Another nearby number I do remember, though (it'll be embarrassing if I
get it wrong, but I'll go with what I remember, rather than work it out)
is 63,360, being the number of inches in a mile, and thus also the scale
of the Ordnance Survey red-cover series (as opposed to the pink-cover
1:50,000 series that replaced it).

Until January 2023 you might come up with different answers depending
on whether you were measuring in the USA or the
UK-and-virtually-every-other-country-that-uses-Imperial-measures. At
the end of December 2022 they will retire the slightly longer US
Survey Mile - which might make plausible John Steinbeck's explanation
of The Pastures of Heaven and that of Lake Wobegon by Garrison
Keillor.

Nice explanation and graphic in the New York Times:

Anyone here go under the name of skimble? Zoom tells me skimble has joined

<delurk>
Humble apologies, it was I. I needed to download and use Zoom for the
first time for something totally unrelated, and I regret that I
attempted to make use of your meeting login details to test out the Zoom
system before my own meeting. Because your drinks party was long
finished it didn't occur to me that you would be notified about me. I
wasn't looking for a free drink, honest. :-)

FYI I am an occasional listener of TA and have been a very irregular
lurker on umra for many years - in fact my addled brain can just about
recall the pre-umra days when we made excessive use of uk.misc to
discuss TA. A couple of current umrats may possibly remember me from
long ago. <waves to Nick L />

I am not a "thing" or a bot looking for self-promotion as Nick O
suggested, but I did indeed have TS Eliot in mind (NOT the musical). My
original plan twenty or more years ago was to set up various
email/usenet personae using different cats' names, but in practice I
never got beyond the first one, skimble, which was chosen for its
railway connection.

I'll now crawl back under my stone.

Has the bunker been down-graded to a small lockable box, or is this some
sort of click-and-collect device?
I guess I'm on probation on umra and am not yet afforded access to the
bunker. However as long as the locker has the proportions of the Tardis
I won't complain.

I don't think that's the problem, this 'locker' is also being offered in
the birthday thread.
Hmm, maybe stocks in the bunker are depleted due to the ongoing health
crisis and recent holiday period. Perhaps someone got locked in and claimed
to be 'isolating'?

I think this calls for a full investigation!
I'm off to defend the truffle hall...

As many chocolate supplies come from companies originally of the Quaker
persuasion, ITYWFT there is an area set aside to facilitate those requiring
a degree of isolation whilst still able to socialise from a safe distance
and imbibe double Belgium Choccie drink and the likes or crack open large
bars of 95%, 85%, 75% (and any other strength) cocoa solids produce. Do I
need to even mention that Milk, White, Fruit & Nut and even Caramac choccie
bars are freely available too?

Anyone here go under the name of skimble? Zoom tells me skimble has joined
the Umra Christmas Drinks party. A week late so I'm doubtful.
<delurk>

Yes there is, you can turn off the camera - or you might not have one.
Assuming it works efficiently then, sound only probably requires far less
bandwidth. Mine Dew, if you have Feline bosses, it is probably obligatory
that you also have a camera for them to walk through the field of vision of

Isn’t there an option for ‘sound only’?
It's not presented as "sound only", but the option is there in practice
- "turn off my camera" or similar. My first thought was that, in some
zoom meetings (the sort where there is a meeting chairman for example),
raising a hand - or similar action - to indicate when you want to speak
is common, so provision has to be made for those present in sound only;
my second thought was that if you can still see the others, even if they
can't see you, you're still _receiving_ video, so it's probably still
quite data-hungry, though presumably less than if you're sending it too.

I don't know if you receive the full video stream from everybody and the
thumbnailing is done in your machine, or if the thumbnailing is done in
a server somewhere (at zoom) and you just receive a single video stream
from that server containing the thumbnails.

I have contributed to a group for technology in the VH world; a number of
the contributors having no sight, no camera or even avatar - just their
voice and when they speak, their name of initials may be displayed on the
screen. The electronic hand is used in this group.

Unless there is a provision for the system to selectively send you
high(ish) definition of a selected camera whilst the rest are just
thumbnails, I don’t see that that could be so; we don’t use gallery view as
they are too small for us to see faces clearly. We see the ‘speaking’
camera view normally. I suppose the system might be switching all the time
so that the ‘speaking’ camera image is high def and all others are
thumbnail until their camera ‘speaks’ so to speak.

Yes, turn off video. I did one for people with sight loss last night and
they chose not to use video so that those with sight, like me, were on

worldwide with less than broad bean. One of the three speakers was Gary

Isn’t there an option for ‘sound only’?
Yes, a couple of options. Either you can use it, on a computer with
video switched off (which allows you to see other people, even though
they can't see you) or, if you don't have a computer/smartphone, you
can dial in from a dumb-phone which means it's audio only in both
directions.

but I have a monthly data limit so am unlikely to make frequent appearances.
A data limit so low that the odd bit of text affects it?
ITSM too low for frequent appearances at Zoom meetings.
Ah. Unlikely to be a problem - we've only had two on UMRA so far.
Two? I only got invited to one.
I organised one on the longest day, in June. I'm pretty sure you were there
as well as the recent one,

There has been a suggestion in the Other Place
that while we are living through these interesting times we might have more regular
get-togethers, so if we do then please join us!
I'll keep half an eye on umra in case you ever have a chocolate party,
but I have a monthly data limit so am unlikely to make frequent appearances.
The (one of) good things about newsgroups in general, & UMRA in
particular is that it is very light on its feet and has hardly any
impact on your data allowance.

Yes they are. When I use Zoom for conferences containing people in China
where broad bean is not, we turn off video so we don’t lose our friend who
has difficulty keeping a signal. This is in Beijing too.

Anyone here go under the name of skimble? Zoom tells me skimble has joined
the Umra Christmas Drinks party. A week late so I'm doubtful.
<delurk>

Mind you, if your first name had been Eliza I might have needed further convincing.
Please explain why you might have needed further convincing, Nick.
:-)
(I'm not Nick but) Eliza was a fun - but quite believable, in the day -
psychologist program, in the 1980s I think, though maybe earlier. Let me
just check, I'm sure it'll be in Wikipedia - wow, yes:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA says 1964-'6. (Read the screenshot
there to get the idea.)

There are those (usually emacs users) who believe vi is short for virus.

I believe this is because apps can't be side-loaded on a mac (they have
to be signed, and so, theoretically, every app has been scrutinised and
vetted.

What, as in "ee, macs will be needed today"?

(EMACS is a computer prog. from the dark days of UNIX [so probably
available on Linux]; IIRR it was originally a text editor, though like
many UNIX utilities grew other functions.)

Anyone here go under the name of skimble? Zoom tells me skimble has joined
the Umra Christmas Drinks party. A week late so I'm doubtful.
<delurk>
