I thought we were going to do two separate tournaments for the late 40s
and the cusp years. That seems more interesting to me than a 50s
contest with extended boundaries.

Or at least one combining late 40s and early 60s. I hope Bruce decides to remove "along with the 50s" from his prior response.

For me, the late 40s and the early 60s make a bad mix. I have no
interest in comparing, say, Wynonie Harris and the Beach Boys.

My suggestion was of the half a loaf is better than none variety. But you might not have many participants for a late 40s tournament.

Why not? The late 40s is the cradle from which much of the music we all
like was born.

Yes definitely!

I suggest first the promised "cusp years" one (1960 - 1963)

And later the late 40's "dawn" years (1946 or 1947- 1949 )

But it's Bruce's baby so.................

Roger joins the winner's circle with me, Steve and jim. Congarts!

Lenior noses out Fats on a tie breaker as they each had two first place listings, but Lenior had more second place listings, 3 to 2.

Montrell and Topsy go into the field for an eventual tournament of champions.

21 years ago I put together two volumes of jump blues cassettes titled "Honkers 'N' Hooter" for my brothers and friends. "(Every Time I Hear )That Mellow Saxophone" by Roy Montrell was on volume two. Several other songs in this contest were not what I would considered obscure.

If you guys prefer that June is ONLY cusp years 1947, 1948, 1949, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963 I guess we can do that. I thought some folks might have trouble finding 4 items to nominate if the 50s were not eligible.

As long as you're asking, I agree with those who think that songs from the pre-50s cusp and the post-50s cusp should be separate contests as well. 1947 and 1963 don't mix.

Either do 1950 and 1959.

I think a separate contest with just 1947, 1948 and 1949 would only have a few people involved. Not many people here would be able to come up with 4 items from those 3 years that were not in Roger's battles.

I think there's a lot of sentiment for separate contests for early and
cusp years. (Both eras have always been considered on-topic here.) I
wouldn't mind if 1950 was included in early years and 1959 in cusp
years if that helps. In any case, please make a final decision so I can
start searching.

Seems like many want it to be just the later cusp years, so we'll go with that, June will be ONLY things recorded or first released in 1960, 1961, 1962 or 1963.

Don't jettison a separate 40's tournament yet. I would include not only 1950 but 1951 and 1952 (they don't seem to have gotten a lot of love in the tournaments so far). Roger mentioned 1946. We don't have a '46 battle for comparison, but if it ain't in Whitburns Pop, R&B or Country book it shoud be eligible.

Here's nearly 200 possibilities, just from 46-48, there may be a few in the battles, I didn't do a thorough search, and I believe I''ve weeded out most of the pop stuff. All but about three of them are on youtube.

The FINAL FOUR is now open. Please rank these from best to worst.
(Every Time I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone - Roy Montrell
Aw Shucks Baby - Tiny Topsy
If You Need Me - Fats Domino
Don't Touch My Head - J.B. Lenior

One and four were clearcut for me. Two and three were basically a
coin-flip, but, having bad-mouthed it in the first round, I find
Tiny's record has grown on me.
