As some people may know, Hackney Wick LO station is being rebuilt. Or,
more accurately, the former minimalist halt is being replaced by a
proper station.
The old station is approached by long ramps. On the west-bound side,
it's a zig-zag ramp, which runs behind an old pub, closed more than 20
years ago. The pub has become something of a canvas for local 'street
artists'.
You can get an aerial view of it in:

The graffiti-covered pub is on the corner in the foreground, and the
zig-zag ramp up to the station is clearly visible. The new station is
being built on the site of the cleared car park to its right.
The whole area had become a grimy, industrial zone, and despite being
just across the River Lea Navigation from the Olympic site, little of
the Olympic redevelopment bonanza happened on that side of the canal.
But, belatedly, the area is being gentrified, with blocks of flats
popping up. It's within easy walking distance of the many job
opportunities in and around the Olympic Park, and of course now has a
frequent LO service (one stop away from Stratford) as well as new
local bus routes.
The old Lord Napier pub had seemed something of an anomaly. Long
derelict, it simply acquired new layers of colourful decoration from
the local artists, while new pubs like the Crate Brewery thrived just
yards away.
But now, finally, it is to be redeveloped. To my surprise, it's to be
restored as a pub, rather than another block of flats. The new LO
station frees up the space currently occupied by the zig-zag ramp
behind the pub, which will therefore be able to grow a little.
I took a few pictures earlier in the week, and if anyone is a fan of
street artists, it might be worth a viewing before it gets turned back
into a tidier, working pub.
