(yes, that's the URL,I have no idea how "politics" enter into it)

Bettie Antry (Rutherford) Wilson, born September 13th 1890,died this
morning (February 13th 2006).She was the third-oldest person in the
world with documentary evidence to support her age.

She had been considered the oldest in the USA until Lizzie Bolden
(four weeks older) was authenticated, and Mrs. Bolden had been considered
the oldest in the world from the death of Hendrikje Van Andel last August
until Maria Esther Capovilla of Ecuador (one day less than a year older
than Mrs. Wilson) was authenticated. Both of them are believed to still
be alive.

Her death brings to a close a period in which four of the 20 oldest
documented people were alive simultaneously, the first time this had
happened in years.A recent television story in which she and the
woman right behind her (Susie Gibson, born October 31st 1890) were
both interviewed contrasted their backgrounds...Mrs. Wilson's parents
were born into slavery while Mrs. Gibson's father "just about owned"
the town she grew up in.

Mrs. Wilson's son Willie turns 97 in October, his first birthday
as an orphan.

He was a bit older in his mother's lifetime than Kitty Sullivan
(Nov 17 1903-Jan 21 2005,mother Sarah Knauss Sept 24 1880-Dec 30 1999),
but Mary Manuel (Jan 1901-Dec 1997) still outdid him...and she died
an orphan.

I would be interested to know more about Mary Manuel's circumstances.
Would you be able to post details of her centenarian parent, Louis?

Mary Manuel was probably born in January 1901 though her Social
Security record says she was born in 1900.

She was both a young mother (I spoke to her daughter Lula Jackson,
born in 1917,after Mary's death,but while the 83-year-old Lula's
grandmother was still alive) and the daughter of an EXTREMELY young
mother (the family thought Susana Lynn was born in 1885,but 1900
census records indicate she was born in 1888...she died in 2001).

Thanks for your further post below, Louis; much appreciated. I presume
the foregoing, relative to Mary Manuel, should read "and she did NOT
die an orphan" given that her mother survived her by over three years.
