I had intended to mark the recent passing* of Katie Boyle by wondering what
her skin was like at the age of 91. One way and another I failed to do so
on the day of the announcement.

I was appalled to learn from Last Word she never used the soap in question
herself as she was allergic.

I'm trying to remember the name and dates of a TV sitcom she appeared in
so that I can find a context for My Brush With Greatness on meeting
Katie Boyle when she opened the Ashington Village Fete. She was so
utterly sweet and charming - even to a short-trousered scrote like wot I
was - that, much to the dismay of my parents, after the fete was over I
went back to my grandmother's cottage and watched her again on TV.

I thought the sitcom was called The Golden Girls but the only Golden
Girls I can find is the US sit-com of much more recent vintage. This
would have been 1950s or at the latest early 1960s.

Nearly right, IMDb tells me it was 'Golden Girl' 1960-61. Can't say I
remember it myself but maybe it was on after my bedtime or on <whispers>
commercial...

Yes. That last would have explained the absolute horror of my parents.

Thanks! I was obviously older than I had thought I was and my reaction

Ooh, was ITV frowned on in your house, too? My father would fine us if
he ever caught us singing the jingle from a tv commercial. 6d a time, IIRC.

going to watch next door’s TV as they had a goggle box long before we had

Interesting. I wasn’t brought up with TV as there was none in the West
Indies back then. When we returned to UK it was a while before Father
bought a set. However, he became obsessed with Corrie and called me a snob
because we didn’t watch it! Actually we did but lost interest in it at
some stage.

moved into their newly-built home in 1954.

Dad had a conditioned reaction to the Coronation Street theme tune - he
would leap from his chair and turn the TV off. Consequently, I have
never seen an episode.

We never watched it either. I remember slamming out of the house one
evening in my late teens because whatever was being watched on our TV was
not what I wanted to see. I puttered (moped) over to my boyfriend's house
where I interrupted their viewing of Corrie :(

I am not sure he would have found much similarity to most locals and the

And not sure how noticing someone observing them might have been received.

We definitely watched Emergency Ward 10, that must have been after we got
the new set (or my father fettled a new knob so we could change the channel
without a pair of pliers). We never had TV Times though and Radiotimes
didn't list both stations in those days. Did the Evening Standard have TV
listings in the '60s?

I can remember ITV being something very much frowned upon as not for
the likes of us but I know that by the time I was deemed old enough to
sit up after Tonight ("and the next Tonight will be tomorrow
night...") I discovered that parents and sister were all seasoned
watchers of the early Coronation Street. In fact I was a seasoned
watcher by the time Martha Longhurst collapsed over her Mackeson in
the snug of the Rovers. I remember that vividly. My dad used to watch
All Our Yesterdays too (should I really be quoting the Scottish Play
on umra?) because it was all about his youth. Maybe it was a Granada
thing; Granada was always a cut above the others was it not?

Granada had one of the largest franchises and therefore had the money

Feisty (aka to you as HonoraryBCDog) is still going strong 4 months
short of her 14th birthday. Very fit and very active. She acquired a
baby sister in 2016 in the form of a Tibetan Spaniel named Plum and
proved to be an excellent rôle model - much less jealous and more
tolerant than I expected! Plum is a darling with a well-developed sense
of humour, is a real chatterbox and is spoiled rotten. (She has helped
HBCD release a couple of books!)

On the feline side I still have Birman Ludo, now 10 years old, in good
health and very indolent. Sorry, who will be 6 this year, took about 4
years to tolerate human interaction, but is now something of a limpet
when not hurtling round the flat and putting Ludo and Plum firmly in
their places with a well-aimed smack apiece.

Oh good for Feisty! She was pretty much exactly the same age as my
Tosca cat, sadly lost to cancer 18 months ago. I loved Tosca to bits
but she was never a /nice/ cat; she had a disagreeable temper
sometimes and was pathologically jealous of anybody who threated to
come between me and herself (well-named then). Now I share my Glasgow
pad with Dinky, diminutive marble tabby female who may be 7 years old
and possibly has some Bengal in her judging by her spotty tummy, which
she loves to have rubbed and tickled, and Pepper who is a
black-and-white male possibly 4 years old. They came to me as an
established pair via Cats Protection from a clearly loving family who
discovered that their daughter was allergic. Being Glaswegian cats
they are handy with the malky (head-butt), and are very lively and
mischievous. They have regular scraps that involve them running round
the flat and stopping now and then for a grapple, but otherwise they
get on very well together. Dinky is friendly in an in-yer-face way and
a little tart who will go to anybody and doesn't mind being picked
up. Pepper is rather more reserved and hides from visitors, although
his curiosity gets the better of him and eventually he will come to
get his ears tickled. He definitely does not like being picked up and
fights back lustily if you try. He was called Oreo when he arrived but
I wasn't having that and called him Pepper because he has a hell of a
kick.

Photos are available on request.

My late ex (Louise, who died at the start of last year) had Tibbies,
three of them. They were noisy and a handful but great fun.

I met Plum's mother and grandmother and I one of them (the grandmother,
I think) was quite yappy and I thought "Oh heck! I hope Plum isn't
going to be like that." She doesn't bark much at all, except at things
which are clearly WRONG and need to be WARNED of (such as man walking
across the garden carrying a very long plank!) but she "talks" a great
deal: she has 2 invisible friends, Harun and Uhura, who she calls to a
lot, grumbles when she's ignored, and shouts merrily whenever she meets
friends old and new.

I've just remembered that one of her brothers went to live with a chap
in Glasgow.

Did you get them? The pictures may have been too big to get through the
transports. I'll send again if you didn't.

Did you get them?
Yes, thank you - just needed the prompt to check Hotmail!

Lovely! The tabby is rather like Sorry. Funny how (nearly?) all
tabbies have that pale bit under the nose.

(Jenny, what's the current state of the menagerie? I seem to have lost
the thread somewhere)
You could write about about your menagerie over the years Jenny, just their
names ought to intrigue .....

Sincerely Chris

When my son was a baby we had a tabby cat who appointed himself Guardian
of the Baby. If baby was in the cot, the cat lay at the foot; if baby
lay on his "eidy" on the floor, cat sat on the corner of the "eidy."

My latex frequently exclaimed "dear poco!" where others might have said
"heck!" or "for heaven's sake!" so when we got the kitten, thinking Dad
wouldn't be best pleased, my daughter and I named him Poco. It sort of
backfired because latex was enchanted by the kitten from the outset.

Sadly, Poco disappeared. We think he probably got into a tourist's car
and was carried away.

So you think it was down to ‘Pocohunters’?

Nearly right, IMDb tells me it was 'Golden Girl' 1960-61. Can't say I
remember it myself but maybe it was on after my bedtime or on <whispers>
commercial...
Ooh, was ITV frowned on in your house, too? My father would fine us if
he ever caught us singing the jingle from a tv commercial. 6d a time, IIRC.
Perhaps, though not to that extent. We simply didn't have a set which could
receive it for some years.

And it was several years before it could be received in Cornwall. Corrie
began after this iirc. There was an element of snobbishness towards ITV. I
wonder what fuelled this as it seems to have been a widely held prejudice.
I wonder what manipulations of the viewers there might have been! Otoh
maybe I am being cynical.

For some totally obscure reason, Katie Boyle is linked in my mind with
Eric Robinson, who used to be seen on TV a lot in the '50s. I can only
suppose it's because my mother disliked her as much as she disliked Eric
Robinson.
Were they both on What's My Line? Or am I thinking of Isobel Barnett
and the grumpy man, umbrella?

For a couple of years I lived in the same area (I later
discovered) as IB had, and even used the same village shop where
her unpaid shopping had apparently happened.
