Does Ubuntu Capture the “Mac Vision And Spirit” Better Than Mac OS X?

,----[ Quote ]
| A week ago, on April 29, Linux distro
| Canonical released Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid
| Lynx) in Desktop, Server and Netbook
| editions. It featured a new look that some
| rate more attractive and up-to-date than
| Snow Leopard’s. “Lucid Lynx’s” new graphics
| card drivers and other consumer-oriented
| innovations front a Linux-based operating
| system package containing all the essential
| productivity applications you need, all for
| free: a web browser, office suite, media
| apps, instant messaging and much more, and
| is being pitched as an open-source
| alternative to Windows and Office or Mac OS
| X and the iApps. Ubuntu’s core applications
| are all free and open source.

No.

Mac OSX is a refined, well designed operating system
written by professional programmers and well debugged.

Ubuntu is a cobbled together pile of reject, half done
programs sitting on top of a massive bug riddled
operating system called Linux.

Linux sucks and Ubuntu Linux sucks even more than the
other 500+ distributions.

SPAM-O-Witless is on a roll today.

Your bias against Linux and specifically Ubuntu is evident as usual. As
someone that owns two Macs and an iPad, as I've always said, there are
pro's and con's to every platform. Ubuntu IS a realistic alternative to
OS X and that is coming from someone that uses OS X every day. There
are trade-offs without a doubt but there are some things Ubuntu does
better than OS X - performance, package management and Free as in
Freedom, immediately come to mind.

I happen to like Ubuntu and on my X200 performance is greatly improved
over Windows 7. Windows 7 is certainly not terrible performance wise
but Ubuntu surpasses it in comparison.

Linux and Ubuntu specifically is developed by professional programmers
as well as volunteers. To imply that they are inferior to developers
elsewhere is a joke. You and I could only wish to have their talents.

The only things that seems to be bug riddled is your brain when it comes
to Linux. You have a deep seated bias against it which is evident to
everyone here.

Hey Moshe-for-brains....

Do you *always* just blindly cut & paste things you don't
understand, or are you purposely trying to fool people.

I think both.

If you would look at the page you linked, only 16 are listed
as [NEW].

All the one's that begin with RE: are not new bugs...they are
either a post saying the bug was fixed, or asking if the bug
is still a problem.

(This post is not meant to have anybearing on the quality of
Ubuntu or Linux, but to correct misinformation.)

Is Ubuntu a Realistic Alternative to Mac OS X?

Your bias against Linux and specifically Ubuntu is evident as usual.
snip fanboi rant.

The only things that seems to be bug riddled is your brain when it comes
to Linux. You have a deep seated bias against it which is evident to
everyone here.
And this is only *one page* of *one day's* bugs........

Now this is just funny.

You go to whine about how "Linux is inferior to MacOS" and what do we
have first on the list? What MacOS users like to install on their OS
when they realize how limited the Apple made tools are.

That's just a riot.

[deletia]

It would be interesting to see a bug tracker for Apple and all of the
comparable 3rd parties that your little bug list would encompass. Did
you even bother reading that before you posted it?

Linux may suck, but it's our software you run when you decide that
you are tired of being treated like a child.

in tracking down bugs and fixing them or is that a bad thing in your

That was one of the first things that greatly impressed me about UNIX, when
I first encountered it (around 1982) -- the man pages, with a clearly
labelled BUGS section.

Is Ubuntu a Realistic Alternative to Mac OS X?
,----[ Quote ]
| My time in the Mac world is numbered. My

http://lowendmac.com/ed/royal/10sr/ubuntu-vs-mac-os-x.html
There are
trade-offs without a doubt but there are some things Ubuntu does better
than OS X - performance, package management and Free as in Freedom,
immediately come to mind.
I happen to like Ubuntu and on my X200 performance is greatly improved
over Windows 7. Windows 7 is certainly not terrible performance wise but
Ubuntu surpasses it in comparison.
Linux and Ubuntu specifically is developed by professional programmers as
well as volunteers. To imply that they are inferior to developers
elsewhere is a joke. You and I could only wish to have their talents.
The only things that seems to be bug riddled is your brain when it comes
to Linux. You have a deep seated bias against it which is evident to
everyone here.

Keep telling yourself that, fanboi. ONLY Linux shitware victimizes so
many users with a multitude of ridiculous problems at once:

===========================================================================

"volume button missing from panel, won't automount external hard drives,
won't auto recognise CDs or DVDs, Firefox loses connectivity for no
reason, had to recompile the Virtual Box Kernel so it would load, Ubuntu
says this version "is not suitable for production use", Ubuntu messed
with Compiz settings (which is nothing new)"

"hibernate hangs...ethernet disabled...no network...shutdown
hangs...CD won't write...printer won't print"

"sound stopped working..video unstable...can't read USB
sticks...battery meter inaccurate...shutdown doesn't work"

"SATA drives not visible... 2nd DVD won't mount... mouse buttons
randomly reassigned"

"boot errors...fstab borked...dependency problems...mouse problems"

"disappointing...draining...frustrating...unacceptable...never again"

"problems too numerous...three days to install...a sorry excuse... just
ridiculous...embarrassed to say I'm a fan of Ubuntu.. no way I'd recommend"

"sound problems, no sound in Amarok, video choppy, Gnome hard crashes, 2
minute boot"

"no sound, touch pad not working, colors missing, icons running off
screen, programs requiring reinstall"

"no sound...no video... lost the GUI... USB stick won't work...won't
shutdown properly"

===============================================================

What a hobbyware joke.

I HATE activation/licensing/authorization/genuine Windows, etc as much
as the next Linux idiot (makes you feel a presumed thief), but that's
the price for running most commercial code.

As for antivirus and malware, easily protected with low-cost,
lightweight apps like Prevx or AVG.

As for pay, pay, pay: If you don't pay, you end up with Linux crapware.
And that's an unacceptable price, at any cost.

Yes it does.
Very convoluted to use and the filtering is terrible.

WLM would be fine if they ever get all the deal breaker bugs out of it.
The latest beta looks fairly good but still a lot to be fixed before
one could use it seriously.

So explain why you are willing to use a FOSS news client, Thunderbird,
yet argue that the primary FOSS OS, that uses a similar development
methodology is not up to par? I think FOSS in general is a great
alternative to commercial options and to be totally honest, it tends to
be more cross platform apps that I use rather than OS specific apps,
hence Thunderbird, Firefox + Google Chrome, Google Docs, OpenOffice,
Truecrypt, Pidgin. None of those options locks me in to a single
platform which I view as good.

The sweeping generalizations is where your arguments fail. My sound and
video are working fine, I have yet to lose the GUI, USB sticks and SD
card work fine and the machine shuts down without fail, something that I
cannot always say for Windows 7 on the same hardware. All of this
working in Ubuntu 10.04. Can I say the same for every hardware
combination out there, absolutely not. I don't pretend it runs
perfectly on all hardware but I seem to have excellent results on
everything Thinkpad T43, T61p, X60, X61, X200.

to Linux. You have a deep seated bias against it which is evident to
everyone here.
* RTFM
* fix it yourself - you have the code
* it's the hardware - blame the mfr.
* Don't forget to activate
* Remember your anti-virus
* Watch out for malware
* Pay, Pay, Pay
I HATE activation/licensing/authorization/genuine Windows, etc as much
as the next Linux idiot (makes you feel a presumed thief), but that's
the price for running most commercial code.
Funny it wasn't the price back in the MS-DOS days or the early Windows
days where these techniques were not employed. They only seemed to
appear once a virtual monopoly situation came to exist. Why put up with
the crap when you don't have to? I think it sends a message to
companies that want to employ the crap and might make them think twice
if enough people went the same route.
As for antivirus and malware, easily protected with low-cost,
lightweight apps like Prevx or AVG.
Agreed but with constant updating prompts and scan prompts - try running
an OS without them sometime (OS X or Linux) and it is simply one less
pain in the neck to bother with.
As for pay, pay, pay: If you don't pay, you end up with Linux crapware.
And that's an unacceptable price, at any cost.
Actually on this very machine, X200, I have switched between Windows
and Linux a few times and keep coming back to Ubuntu. In my experience
Linux boots faster, is more responsive, doesn't require me to activate,
allows me to ignore AV and is generally a pleasure to use. I have no
problems doing the vast majority of things I typically do on my Windows
PC or Mac when using Ubuntu and still maintain that all three platforms
each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

GNU/Linux (RedHat first, then Gentoo, then Debian) has worked very
well on every machine I've used, and every piece of hardware except for an
ancient MidiMan (IIRC) adapter card. I've never worried about Hardware
Compatibility Lists, though I have had to work a bit on getting a few
devices to work.

A pretty good record when you consider than /none/ of the machines
and few of the peripheral devices were "Built for Linux".

Why should the mfr waste their time catering to such a tiny user group?

Try selling your "Linux is acceptable" bullshit to the untold millions
of users that depend on MS Office, Adobe programs, video apps, sound
apps, accounting apps, development tools and whatever apps for which
there is only a bogus Linux "alternative" pretender like Gimp or Ardour
or kdenlive or OpenOffice or Gambas.

You'll starve before any Windows user will give up their real code to
use the ridiculous "free" hobbyware.

You mean "good enough", of course, since there are - maybe - 3 truly
good open source programs. The rest are just hackjob cloneware slop.
In my opinion, of course. I don't give shitty Linux software a pass
because it's free of cost and doesn't come from MS.

And hey, what kind of "community" bases its entire office software
product on the features of and compatibility with another?

Linux and Ubuntu specifically is developed by professional programmers

elsewhere is a joke. You and I could only wish to have their talents.
Keep telling yourself that, fanboi. ONLY Linux shitware victimizes so

"volume button missing from panel, won't automount external hard drives,

What a hobbyware joke.
Absolutely.
These are pretty basic features that have bugs.
Volume control not working?
Come on already.

Linux still, after 15+ years can't manage to make
hibernate/suspend work properly?

It's like some bad joke.

On the one hand, I can't confirm that there is any configuration
for which the volume control does not work in Linux. OTOH, I can
personally confirm that MacOS intentionally acts stupid when it
comes to video files taken from video cameras.

[deletia]

Whether or not the mini can or cannot hibernate properly regardless
of what OS it's running isn't terribly interesting.

I specifically setup AFS on my main Linux machine because I was tired
of putting up with Apple's pisspoor samba implementation.

Versus...

1) Not supporting the use of MPEG2 files taken off of a Sony handicam
in the bundled applications despite the fact that I paid for the
supid payware quicktime MPEG2 extension.

2) Requiring the stupid payware MPEG2 QT extension despite the fact that
the system clearly supports that format to begin with since it can play
DVDs.

3) Not supporting all of the features present in an MPEG ps file despite
the fact that it clearly supports them when playing them off of a DVD.

4) Not supporting combinations of audio and video in their own container
format that are pretty common on a DVD.

5) There version of Samba constantly "hangs" and makes it impossible to
reconnect with "fouled" shares without rebooting the entire system.

6) Doesn't support the full video acceleration features of an nvidia card.

7) Didn't even have a low level video acceleration framework even for h264
until the very latest revision of the OS.

[deletia]

Then there are the objectionable design choices in Apple's applications.

Now let me see, flatfish - it is *you* who calls Roy a "spammer", and even

*You* have trolled c.o.l.a. for 15 years now under hundreds of names,

*You* are now increasingly cross-posting your drivel to Ubuntu forums.

I can understand you cross-posting between advocacy forums, but Ubuntu etc.
forums? No, flatfish. That's a sign of who the increasingly-desperate

"hypocrite", comes to mind.

You are sad, you are a loser, and you are beneath contempt.
