Indeed. And if like Paddington, a revised version comes out in thirty or
forty years, it'll be good, but not quite perfect: won't crash the gears
in quite the same way Pat did, or something.

(I've only heard headlines that it was PP's creator, not his actual
name; if as I think it is/was Oliver Postgate, then there are many other
similar series that he had a hand in.)

No, it wasn't Oliver Postgate but John Cunliffe - who also created Rosie
and Jim. I hadn't realised until now that Lynda Snell, or rather her
close friend, was also in Postman Pat, providing the voices for several
characters.

Oliver Postgate died several years ago.

Michael Bond died in June, so not very recent news, but close enough to
mention in the same breath as the death of John Cunliffe, given that
both wrote very popular, televised stories for children.

Old? Don't talk to me about old. I can't hear or see the words "So

an earworm for hours.

Is that "Mary Ann", and the Beach Boys?
I shared this thread with my brother, and he says

I wonder whether "So long..." might have been an echo of "So farewell
then", the opening line of many "posthumous tribute" poems supposedly
penned by "E. J. Thribb" for Private Eye.

Was whicheverrat started the use of these phrases in this way, inspired
by that?

A quick search in Google Groups shows 'So, farewell then...' is the more
usual subject line in such threads here and is definitely a nod to E J
Thribb.

Some of Sid's posts under that heading have certainly been in the style
of E.J. Thribb. Reflecting on whether it is possible to parody a satire,
I realised that I have no idea what EJT might have been satirising.

... might be satirising. EJ Thribb is still alive and well, still
memoralising, and still 17½.

Son bought me a subscription to Private Eye two years ago. When the
first year passed he mentioned that he'd left it to renew and would
continue to do so. So I now have an obligation to read every issue,
instead of just those I used to buy when travelling by train.

It's hard graft for a while, after we get back from a couple of months

At some point, my dad bought me a subscription to Punch. Although that
was sometimes amusing, it was hard graft; I didn't renew.

Whilst I tend to stay up to date with P Eye I do find holidays helpful
to catch up on my other magazine reading. Although my forthcoming rest
period pre-holiday may allow a similar opportunity I suppose.

We too have a subscription, in fact also a gift from a completely lovely
friend, and I have to say we read it cover to cover. Along with the
Economist it provides a fairly comprehensive view of the Situation at
home and abroad. We also get the Times and pick up an Evening Standard
and listen to a lot of news on the radio, so we are possibly overdoing
it. But it does mean we are never without something to argue about :)

In UK I used to read it in Tesco. Now I subscribe - keeps me up to
