Just been pla-- er-- researching with mobile phone video.
Whilst having a coffee by the pond on this very dull and dreary day, Fudge
came for a bit of attention. So I tried a video clip. It's only picture
size 176 x 144 (the alternative is only128 x 96 and the light was really
bad, but I thought - give it a go. Anyhow file size is 91.6 KB and file
type is .3GPP - whatever that is? The file plays automatically in QT
Player for me , but will it play in whatever Player you use?

WMP will play it, but only if I choose it from the list, it doesn't play it
automatically.

I wonder why? Could it be something to do with your WMP settings.
Does it open your WMP ready for play though?

I presume it's 'cos .3gp is an unrecognised file name for WMP.

Nope it just asks me to choose what to open it in.

Yep - on clicking the link, it opened real player, which had a think, and
downloaded an extension, then played the clip.

Real Player opened automatically then decided it needed a plug-in which
it downloaded and installed with my permission and then carried on and
played the clip. Quality was suprisingly good as long as I left the
'screensize' quite small. Understandably if played at a larger size it
just became horribly pixellated. Sound was okay as well.

That reply prompted the following thought. Didn't Russ Conway produce a
single called 'Pixellated Penguin' back in the 50's? Was he ahead of his
time or has digital imaging been around longer than I thought? :)

He's in a very bad mood atm. Slept out and breakfasted out this morning.
Now he's sulking in a covered nest he's made in an old defunct cucumber
frame. Won't emerge until he's hungry again I reckon, whereas Fudge
appears for a cuddle every time I go up the garden.
I presume that you haven't got QuickTime viewer or you'd have been able to
see Giz on this:

Well, Apple iTunes comes with QuickTime.
So if you Install Apple iTunes, you'll (also) end up with Apple
QuickTime.
(& a whole bundle of other stuff Installed, including various windoze
"Services" & "Helper Applications" that it thinks you need).

& if you try to download Quicktime, from the default Apple Download
Sites (which, I assume, is where Firefox would go to Download any Apple
stuff?)
then Apple will try to get you to use their Apple iTunes as your Media
Player.

Apple QuickTime (& iTunes) are like many other Media Players, these
days, (including RealPlayer, which you moaned about)...

They do their best to fill your Hard Drive up with as much stuff
as possible, scattered as far as possible into various Folders.
& the same with the Registry & they are forever Connecting out onto
the Internet to their Servers.

It seems that more & more Media Players these days (try to) do that
sort of thing.

It's actually quite a job keeping an eye on everything that they
all want to do!

It is still possible to download QT as a standalone app... you just have
to search around the Apple site for it :-)

I don't think I moaned about Real Player, it was the principle of
widely advertising something as free then making it difficult to find
that annoys me.

Whilst having a coffee by the pond on this very dull and dreary day, Fudge

I may have mentioned this before but I was reminded by watching Fudge
brushing against whoever's leg in that clip.

Davie, my disabled friend, has a cat called Shadow. She was abandoned by
her previous owners and came to live with Davie following his accident
and when she was already about 3 years old. She does the leg brushing
thing with me but can't do it with Davie when he's in his wheelchair
bedcause she can't get near his legs. Instead she brushes past his wheel
and then turns and brushes past the wheel again from the opposite
direction. :)

Fudge isn't my cat either, but lives in my garden - so I suppose he is
really adopted by myself and Gizmo. They do indulge in paws - e - cuffs
occasionally but on the hole are quite friendly.

Sound OK on all. Presumably you could hear the water flowing into the

You're gonna have to miss out on that brief glimpse of a tasty knee then.
:)
Hope Troy doesn't try to get his teeth into it :-(

With a bit of messing about I've now got it to play in QT,
WMP and RealOne.
Sound OK on all. Presumably you could hear the water flowing
into the ponds in the background and my falsetto - talking to cats
mode - voice too.
no, couldn't see or hear anything - realplayer popped up and informed
me a download was needed but it didn't download :(
Tried several times since too, and no option to open it in any other
application either.
So...
Don't just sit & wait for an "Option" to be handed to you,
to Play it in another Player!!!
:-)

In circumstances like that, it's up to *you* to decide what Player
you want to Open a File up in...

It won't always twig that you might want to be in control (& often
tries it's best to *stop* you from being in Control), but, one way
or another, you can tell it what you want.

You need to *tell* windoze to Open the File with whatever Media Player
you want to use...

Or Open up the Media Player that you want to use & then use it's own
File (Or URL) Open Dialog Box to Open up the File (or URL).

You can Open the File directly (once you have it on your PC, p'raps by
getting it directly from the Server, or by getting it out of the
Temporary Internet Files Cache).

I did that but this is the message I get

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to
play the file could not be found.

Just been pla-- er-- researching with mobile phone video.
Whilst having a coffee by the pond on this very dull and dreary day,
Fudge came for a bit of attention. So I tried a video clip.
It's only picture size 176 x 144 (the alternative is only128 x 96
and the light was really bad, but I thought - give it a go.
Anyhow file size is 91.6 KB and file type is .3GPP - whatever that
is?
3rd Generation Partnership Project.
http://www.3gpp.org/About/about.htm

The File Type of 3gpp (which is usually used with a File Extension of
.3GP) is one of the "Standards" that they have introduced...
http://www.3gpp.org/specs/specs.htm

Most (many) MultiMedia Players, such as RealPlayer, windoze media Player
& Apple QuickTime etc,) can handle it, but very often they need to
Download the latest CoDecs or similar.
... The file plays automatically in QT Player for me ,
& RelPlayer very often Installs itself as the "Default" Player for
.3GP Files - though, as with most Media Players, usually, whichever is
Installed last ends up as the Default Player for any given File Type,
depending on whether or not the other Players also have Utilities to
"grab" their File Associations back.

but will it play in whatever Player you use?
http://www.flyingnun.co.uk/Fudgevideo.3gp
See above.
It *should* be able to be played in lots of different Media Players,
but they may have to Downlaod a new CoDec.

It didn't play in my RealPlayer V10 - that needed to Download a new
Codec, which I didn't lkwet it do.

But it played OK in windoze Media Player - When I tried that, WMP said
that it was a File Type that it didn't recognise, but it could try to
Play it anyway & it did (but with no Sound)
Wouldn't play for me at all, although Realplayer opened and tried
to download an update but then I was told I wasnt connected to the
internet - so didn't get to see it !!
Maybe you have Blocked the Real Updater thingy from Internet Access
in your Firewall?
Or you may have Blocked it from accessing the real Networks Servers?

I know lots of people do Block RealPlayer from Contacting any of the
Real Networks Servers, cos they moan about it doing stuff that they
don't want, behind their backs.

Or p'raps the Real networks Servers were just busy?

But you can Play it in other Media Players as well.

Believe me I tried several times during the day and the next day also but
no luck. I even tried pasting the url into WMP but still no luck. I
checked what I had blocked in my firewall but still no luck.
So I installed Quicktime this morning - and hey presto - I see the videa :D

didn't ever get that at his own home - too bothered about their golden
