Err-hem, umm, Jim has to tinkle the ivories for Joe’s departure ceremony;
he’s unsure whether he could / should play anything, so....

UMRA should perhaps help out with some suggestions please?

The Mustelidae (/ˌmʌˈstɛlɪdi/; from Latin mustela, weasel) are a family
of carnivorous mammals, including weasels, badgers, otters, ferrets,
martens, minks, and wolverines, among others.

I have no idea why I knew that ferrets are in that family.

I see it worked that time!

I suppose it'd be too much to ask for people not to use fancy quote
marks in the subject line, as it's probably just some combination of my
system (Turnpike) and Eternal-September. (Though the bounce definitely
came from their side.)

How confusing to bears of little brain! When I type ‘, I see a small angled
line sloping down to the left about half character high. In the instance
above, the character after the The, (;-))) ) appears a a straight character
with neither taper or slope. Whereas the characters either side of the word
gems look similar to my ‘! Perhaps my ‘news swerver’ is to blame.

Yes, the character Mike sent was a "curly" or "smart" quote. It's made
even more complicated in that some systems - and softwares - "helpfully"
change even if you _type_ the same character, around something, like
'this' or "this" - turn it into two, different, non-standard characters.
Microsoft Word is one of the worst offenders; you can stop it doing it,
but the default setting is that it does. I don't know if you can even
disable the behaviour at all in all softwares/firmwares.

The straight ' is plain text and readily readable by most (all) programs.
The ‘ and ’ are curly quotes and the bane of my life elsewhere - as are
accents. A simple Café becomes a Café :(
Sometimes - usually, I think, these days - characters beyond 126 pass
through usenet OK.

‘Totally confused’ , they both slope down to the left on my screen.

‘Totally confused’ , they both slope down to the left on my screen.
The right hand apostrophe above on my screen is shaped like a comma, but
higher up, so its top is level with the top of the d.
The left hand apostrophe is like the right hand one, but rotated through
90 degrees.

Mine similar from the quoted text but, left hand one rotated 180 degrees!

P. S.: this is second time of posting: Some combinations of newsreader
with Eternal September don't like funny characters in the subject line
(E-S bounces the post). I've adjusted the quote marks, so this _should_
get through.
P. P. S.: I didn't spot the one in "Joe's". Let's see if it gets
through this time.
I see it worked that time!
I suppose it'd be too much to ask for people not to use fancy quote
marks in the subject line, as it's probably just some combination of my
system (Turnpike) and Eternal-September. (Though the bounce definitely
came from their side.)
Occasionally, some ‘gems’ are sent by me but don’t appear in my NewsTap
postings. I use the keyboard ‘ character but am unaware of any fanciness
being applied to it by me?
The ' in that post are of a curly nature - ‘gems’ - which doesn't bother
Agent or the Plusnet newsswerver.
Hmm, my reply to this has not appeared here, I guess some part of it
offended the newsswerver gods.

I think it's probably just ES. I'm using Agent at the moment and last
weeks I had to start a new thread to reply to the "New Book About The
Archers" thread because ES refused to accept my post and I'm now
guessing that was down to the quote characters in the subject line.

It is ES. By experimentation, I've found
(a) if posted via the PlusNet server, posts that ES bounce get through
(b) it's _only_ if the funny characters are in the _header_.

If they're in the body of the post, the _post_ will be accepted anyway,
though they may or may not get through unaltered - that depends on every
bit of the internet that the post has passed through. Mostly they get
through OK, sometimes they get turned into something like "=3D",
sometimes into two or more strange characters, sometimes &163;, and
sometimes (possibly after they've been into one of those) _back_ into a
non-standard character but not the one they started as - ³these² seem
popular (that's a raised 3 and 2) when something has started out in
"curly quotes".

Have the courage to be ordinary - people make themselves so desperately unhappy
trying to be clever and totally original. (Robbie Coltrane, RT 8-14 Nov. 1997.)

I noticed the TV subtitles on a programme I was watching recently
appeared to replace ' with 9, but only for some of the instances.
