I've actually managed to survive two whole weeks of full-time teaching,
several new timetables and more to come it seems. I've even survived being
carted off to hospital. Maybe I'll last until half-term after all then.
Phew!

Eeeek! You ok?
But maybe if you need some time off in future, you could just ask your HOD
nicely?

I didn't get any time off. I chose an afternoon where I had a PPA and got
taken to hospital just before it started. Stayed there most of the evening
on my own time. Ah well. At least they let me out I suppose.

Then you'll plan it better in the future? I know you haven't had much
practice at this full-time-working lark.

get a free bed and flowers and lucozade and stuff?

From reading the exciting episodes of Days in the Life of a Pope, I had
formed the impression that his holiness doesn't do any teaching at all
but spends his working hours finding ways to antagonise his colleagues.

I've actually managed to survive two whole weeks of full-time teaching,
several new timetables and more to come it seems. I've even survived being
carted off to hospital. Maybe I'll last until half-term after all then.

What's happened?
WBK...decided it wasn't worth it for anyone in the class to do any learning. HT
waffling over next step with WBK (the one I had to restrain last year, now an
almost full time member of class). Enough violent incidents with varied pupils
to warrant suspension. Of course, nothing happened. I am not pleased at the
moment!

Fortunately acted up in front of the LEA behaviour support person, who saw
exactly how he really was.

Hopefully, we'll get a couple of days a week respite as he may go to PRU. Right
now, I'm totally p*ssed off because it's Y6, the kids lost a year last year due
to behaviour problems and they can't afford any more.

To their credit, no child in the class played into the behaviour. They were
suitably rewarded for it.

But I'm not sure I'm going to last it out!!

It ain't You-Know-Who who's causing the problem. It's more normal problems
now... In a way, good, in a way, not so good. Hard to say.

Me too. Lots of dark mutterings at various points but in the end they said
it was probably just "one of those things" and let me go home. I'm
currently on low dose aspirin and have a CT scan to come in the next month
or so though. The expectation is that it won't show anything. Fingers

I've been doing that after getting to an unacceptable size last winter 6
months after starting and I have lost 5 stone. I am now ill with Chrons and
have to eat a carbo only diet for a week after not eating for nearly 2 days.
I hope I don't put weight back on as that would really depress me!!

Losing weight and getting healthy is not as easy as some people especially
doctors imagine !!

WTH Chron's can be very hard to deal with on its own so work that bit out

is an amazing achievement IMHO and you *could* do it again if you had to I

You wouldn't put on 5 stone in 2 weeks though - or would you?

It seems to me it's possible to put on more weight than the weight of
the food you eat.

That's another of my theories.

No I'd better not !!!
No what worries me is that whatever you believe about metabolism after doing
excess exercise (5 miles walking plus every day) and strict calorie control
(not going over 1300) I was able to relax a lot on the exercise (still kept
busy and moving but no formal exercise kept an eye on the food and still
managed to keep losing over the summer. I now know my body will be in
starvation mode thanks to being ill. when I do start to eat again it will be
a safe stodgy diet for a while which my body will try to store in case the
food stops again. I shall just try to be as low fat as poss I suppose and
see if that works. I get weighed on Monday which should show the loss not
any gain. I then have 12 weeks to get my diet back to what it was before the
next weigh in !!

It can be hidden in the back of the mind. Didn't know how stressed I was

I can talk about almost anything. :-)

Sitting in the staffroom before the last lesson of the day, which was free
for me, I became aware that my right arm wasn't working right.
Remote-feeling and no fine motor control. Someone suggested showing it to
the school nurse but on standing up I found my right leg was similarly
affected. All sorted in 5 minutes but I was cold and clammy and my blood
pressure was a little high so it was deemed necessary to send me to the
local hospital to be checked out. Long story short, they let me go home at
around 10:15.

#1 Create maze on classroom floor using books. Get one kid to guide
another through it using Logo "style" commands. Hey presto -
introduction to programming. Throw in random books after kid starts to
negotiate maze for introducing if/then problems for briter ones.

#2 Download "Warriors of the Net" video and burn to VCD. Play on TV
(assuming you have DVD player)

Have a PC simulation involving kids running around somewhere but can't
find disc. Will try and hunt this out for you.

You could try some of the materials from the KS3 strategy. 7.1 is using
PowerPoint and there are some good resources about choosing suitable images.
They could then plan their presentation (someone else has already said
that!) http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/keystage3/respub/ and go to ICT.
7.3 is about making a leaflet so some discussion about style and function
might work? There is also some new stuff about ICT capability below level 3
so you might find something useful there; I haven't had chance to look yet
and I have enough trouble getting Year 7 to sit still long enough to log in
so the idea of Y3 makes me shiver!

You could compile a database using cards. You could even do one using
hole-punches so that you could use a thin rod to sort the cards (such
as, to find all the cards with a particular answer).

You can work out branching databases using the whiteboard / on pieces of
paper. If you've got a magnetic board, you can have a small pile of
cards with (for example) animal or plant names on, which have to be
sorted using Yes/No questions, and fix the cards to the board in the
right spots (or use blu-tak if no magnetic board).

Following Fatmax's suggestion, you could get the children to write sets
of instructions for doing something or getting somewhere in the school.
Try getting other children to follow the instructions literally to see
if they work.

The very first exercise we do with our new programming students is to
create a flowchart showing how to make a cup of tea. It leads to no end
of controversy (use teapot or bag in mug? milk before or after?) but
gets them thinking, and proves that there can be several different
"right" answers. Perhaps younger children won't know how to make tea,
but you could do the same exercise on how to make a cheese and tomato
sandwich. And you could "simulate" a spreadsheet on the whiteboard,
showing the number of slices of bread, cheese, tomato for one sandwich
and then in another column work out how many for two or ten sandwiches.

Hmm. Must be nearly lunch time...

to.

.
Teach keyword search skills (AND and NOT) to explain how hits work
(stand up if you're a boy, stand up if you're a girl; stand up if you're
a boy and a girl!)
Teach knowledge and understanding of a range of subjects - where do we
see technology in the world around us, etc.
Teach control and programming using the pupils themselves
Get pupils to bring electronic toys/games for (virtual) dissection.
Plan presentations etc. away from the computer so that you can maximise
computer time available once they get it working, and before it breaks
again.
Use a tripewriter... but you've done that one.

I agree with what a pain ICT suites are.
Ours has caused more trouble than it's worth, mostly because the

footprint' ones, so even though it is a small room we have managed 15 in
there plus a cache server.
It gets bloomin' warm when full of Year 6s though!

Our room is a horseshoe shape. We can only get 16 chairs in there, but
there is no room for anyone to sit on the 2 corner ones.

We can only get 14 kids in - and they suffocate.

Where we have boxes, we put two together (with printer on top where
applicable), and the monitors directly on a desk.
Looks much better, seems to make more room and a much better position for
the children.

Whatever we do, we can't get away from the size and shape of the room.

No, nor can we - it is *much* smaller than a normal classroom, you just do
the best you can with what you've got.

It still sounds at least twice the size of what we have.

We can't even hang the projector from the ceiling.
It is in a most inconvenient place.

You get a lovely silhouette of your belly on the whiteboard.

I keep recommending this approach to schools.

Best IT suite I've ever taught in, the pupils' computers are arranged in
rows facing towards one side of the room (ie. sideways on to the
teacher). It's great - you stand in one place at the front of the room
and can see what is going on on every screen and on every child's face!

Ours is similar - it is a narrow room so they are down both sides. We did
unfortunately have to put two with their backs to me, but use them only when
we have to.

Glad to know you approve ;o)

They're not down both sides in the one I'm talking about though - that's
what makes it different. It's a large room so there's enough room for
all of them to face the same way... it makes life so much easier.

Teach keyword search skills (AND and NOT) to explain how hits work
(stand up if you're a boy, stand up if you're a girl; stand up if you're
a boy and a girl!)
snigger
How many standers do you get at that point?
I agree with what a pain ICT suites are.
Ours has caused more trouble than it's worth, mostly because the
school is not big enough to have one so it has adversely affected the
library, and because there are only 8 pooters in there and at least 2
are always broken.
Ours works fine ;o)
4 in the library, 3 outside my classroom, 1 in my classroom, two in the room
next door, one at least in each of the others...

When the network is running, so am I!

The whole point is you don't get any because using the keyword reduces
the number of 'hits'.

reduces the number of 'hits'... in this case to a ridiculous scenario,
but it makes the point.

Teach keyword search skills (AND and NOT) to explain how hits work
(stand up if you're a boy, stand up if you're a girl; stand up if you're

Teach knowledge and understanding of a range of subjects - where do we
see technology in the world around us, etc.
Teach control and programming using the pupils themselves
Get pupils to bring electronic toys/games for (virtual) dissection.
Plan presentations etc. away from the computer so that you can maximise
computer time available once they get it working, and before it breaks
again.
Use a tripewriter... but you've done that one.
