A Good Man - Irma Thomas
http://youtu.be/GkAArS-Ye4o
Straight out of New Orleans on the Ron label here's early Irma Thomas
in 1960 following up her great debut "Don't Mess With My Man". BTW the
"Thomas" credited as writer isn't her

Little Susie" on Cadence. recorded 15 August 1957 at RCA Victor Studio
in Nashville,Tn. Personnel : Don Everly,Phil Everly,Chet Atkins,Ray
Edenton,Lightnin Chance,Buddy Harman,Floyd Cramer. Producer: Archie

Boot Hill - Curley Page
http://youtu.be/z3OieREefWc
Blues artist Curley Page (real name Cleo Page) from Shamrock La (south
of Shreveport) recorded the decent wailer "Boot Hill" in Los Angeles
in 1958. I show it released that year on the tiny Dalton (not to be
confused with the West Coast DOLTON label) in 1958.

The same track seems to have been included in a later (1963 I *think*)
Sutton blues LP compilation "Stormy Monday & Other Blues" headlined by
Jimmy Witherspoon. "Boot Hill" on this issue is credited to one "Sly
Williams" but is identical to the Curley Page above.

Perhaps Diane can shed more light on this one?

People Will Say We're In Love - Spaniels

It was August 27 1959 when---in an 8 song session---The Spaniels
recorded the Gerald Gregory-led revival of the old "Oklahoma!" show
tune "People Will Say We're In Love". (There's no truth in the rumour
that this one was done only because Gerald forgot the words of "The
Surrey With A Fringe On Top" :)

The group at this time was still Pookie Hudson,Ernest Warren,Donald
Porter,James Cochran---and of course deep voiced Gerald. And the group
was still pacted to Vee Jay

Rainbow - Gene Chandler

Getting real soulful here with Mr Gene Chandler who made a whole slew
of first rate records like this in his lengthy post-"Duke Of Earl"
career. This Curtis Mayfield-penned 1962 gem for Vee Jay became a hit
all over again three years later in one of the very best live soul
performances ever---"Rainbow '65"

I think this is one of those instances where the Blues Discography is
wrong. They only list Dalton 106 under Curley Page. And they list the
track on the Sutton LP #316--and nothing else--as by Sly Williams. They
don't list any of the other musicians and they only say "Los Angeles,
mid/late 1950s" for recording information. So as I say I think they got
it wrong...unless Dalton 107 wasn't actually released? Is that possible?

Rainbow - Gene Chandler

Chandler+Mayfield=Brilliance

Maybe Tomorrow - Everly Brothers

One of my very favorite Everlys, and some of the best singing they ever did
It's a lot better, imo, than the mega-selling flip.

A Good Man - Irma Thomas

Coming from the great Irma this one is just a solid B.

Boot Hill - Curley Page

People Will Say We're In Love - Spaniels

I developed an aversion to the entirety of "Oklahoma" when I was very young
and even the Spaniels can't snap me out of it.

The Curly/Cleo/Sly "Boot Hill" is a holy grail for most blues guitar
players that I know. It was one of the most heavily discussed records
for years from the time it was around in 1970 on the Red Lightnin' LP
"Blues in D Natural."

Yes, I have that album, that's how I knew the record. Whoever he is, I
think his playing sounds a lot like Johnny Guitar Watson--very
progressive for the late 50s. Did anyone else think so?

As I recall, everyone had a different opinion, but there were a couple
of Watson opinions. There were also a couple of Jimi Hendrix opinions
as well. Go figure.

We used to get copies of that Red Lightnin' album at our store from
time to time. Of course it was a British release but I guess copies
made their way across the pond. Or was it also released there?
