Discussion:
Interracial Royal Marriages?

Hi everyone!

I am curious about something...we have all understood that one of the
adopted rules of royal marriage is that the likely spouse practices
the same religion. With that said, in most countries, that would
render a good portion of a "minority" so-called unfit for marriage.

My question is for you, within the last century, have there been any
interracial marriages in any royal family (worldwide) that you can
think of?

Thanks for your help.

Prince Joachim of Denmark married a woman of mixed chinese ancestry. Also one
of the sons of the ruling prince of Lichtenstein married a woman of african
descent (black),

Princess Alexandra of Denmark comes to mind, she is of fractional Asian
blood.

I also believe a lady of African descent married a Prince of and at
Liechtenstein.

George Mountbatten, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven married Countess Nada de
Torby, daughter of a Russian Grand Duke (grandson of Nicholas I) and his
morganatic wife, Countess Sophie von Merenberg. Sophie was herself the
daughter of a morganatic union between a member of the House of Nassau-Weilburg
and a daughter of Alexander Pushkin. Alexander Pushkin's mother was a
granddaughter of Ibrahim Hanibal, described by some as an "Abyssinian
princeling" who was sent as a gift from the Ottoman Sultan to Peter the Great
and eventually won his freedom and attained some degree of success as an
engineer.

The 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven was a great-grandson of Queen Victoria, elder
brother of Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, and a maternal
uncle to the Duke of Edinburgh, consort of Queen Elizabeth II.

Not true. While he has some Jewish ancestors, he himself was Protestant,
not Jewish. See <http://members.aol.com/eurostamm/miller.html> for details
of his ancestry. He also has some alleged Amerindian ancestry.

Altho not exactly royal - but closely related - the Lascelles being
discussed in another thread --

The Hon James, 2nd son of the Earl of Harewood, grandson of the Mary, The
Princess Royal -- had as his second wife Lori (Shadow) Susan Lee Porter who
was, at least, partially Native American (their younger child is in line for
the Throne); his third and current wife Joy Elias-Rilwan is either a
Nigerian or an Afro-Caribbean (I have contradictory sources),

Thank you - but actually one's birthplace can have little to do with one's
nationality or ethnic make-up. I will make the assumption however that the
current Mrs Lascelles is Nigerian.

In a 1989 interview Mrs Lascelles the then actress said: "I'm
Nigerian, and almost always cast as a West Indian. Not that I'm
complaining too much....."

"I come from a rather well-to-do Nigerian family. My grandfather was
the first black student to study law at Oxford. I come from a large
family and am the only one who didn't chose law or one of the medical
professions...Actually, you know, I am viewed a bit of a family
let-down. All my brothers are lawyers, doctors, surgeons, dentists.
For the little girl to go off and be an actress was considered very
bad form..." "Ours is a Muslim family. Although my parents are quite
modern..."

Really? Isn't it that little island between Western Samoa and Tonga? The
crown is hereditary by female line secundogeniture and the queen must
abdicate when she reaches majority (but legal majority of the present
sovereign has been perpetually postponed by an act of the Ukogbanian
Parliament. That implies some little annoyances: she can not vote, can not
pronounce publicly a speech written by herself and can not have a driver
licence). The kingdom has been severely criticized in the last rapport of
Male Rights Watch for his persistent refusal to abolish polyandry.

Or perhaps I am confusing and it's in Africa.

Atlantic, halfway between Normandy and the Faeroer.

AFAIK this hasn't been mentioned yet - the last Maharaja of the Punjab
married firstly a woman whose father was German and whose mother was
Ethiopian, his second wife was Ada Wetherill, a Londoner, and of his
children his eldest son married a daughter of the Earl of Coventry
while one of his daughters married an Australian, another an
Englishman and a third a Frenchman. Quite a cross-section!

This gets even more complicated:
Duy-Tan, King of Annam [Viet Nam] had 3 French wives [out of 5 I
think] but not at the same time.
Marie Anne Viale '1928]
Fernande Antier [1938]
Marie Ernestine Maillo [1938]
AND
Bao-Dai, Emperor of Viet Nam, married in 1972 Monique Baudot. He also
converted to Catholicism somewhere along the line.
Marie was not styled "Empress" however until after the death of his
first wife, the mother of the Crown Prince, now supposed claimant to
the throne.
Like most Asian royal families, this one is huge, with branches all
over the world. There is one branch in the US with another "claimant"
passing out Imperial Orders.
