The National Trust sends out magazines in wrappers printed "I am 100%
compostable and made with potato starch."

100% compostable? Excellent! Pleased they are doing that pleased they
tell us. But why do we need to know about the starch? In case we
confuse "compostable" with "edible"?

And come to think of it, why is it compostAble and edIble? Why not edable?

We can fuse, but we can also note and size, and we don't vis, aud, dur,
or leg, so it can't be that. (Durable is different to the others, which
are all _sort of_ derived from verbs, even if Latin ones, more directly
than durable is.)

I guess it might have something to do with center vs. centre; centreing
looks odd.

Profiling gets me: when someone is profiled, say for a magazine article
about them, I always think of someone taking a shaping tool to them, to
make a nice edge that will fit into something. (I suppose these days a
profiling tool is probably a piece of software for journalists; to me
its still something you attach to a drill or milling machine.)

Isn't profile just one of those nouns which has become verbed[1] in
common usage? I'm so used to it that it seems natural to me so it must
have been used this way for a while, but things like "I'll message you"
still grate. I'll get used to it in time, no doubt.

I still haven't come to terms with the use of protest as a transitive
verb. Nor - and this makes me a proper Pedantic Old Git - with the use
of convince to mean persuade. "He convinced me to..." sounds horrible
to me; surely one is convinced *of* something but persuaded *to*...

It's the navy pea coat, thanks.

[1]For the avoidance of doubt, I use this ironically.

No; you want imperative for "go", and "domus" is nominative whereas you
want ... (cont. p94 - covered in the film!)

I know nowt about the etymology, but have an issue with all such
publishers claiming, without any qualification, that these
wrappers may be put in the bin with garden waste.

I thought I would check with my local authority, and they advised
me:

"Unfortunately this cannot go into our garden wastes bin. What
the producers of your magazine possible have not told you is that
if this goes to an open windrow facility, which is what we use,
it could end up being windblown around the site and become
litter. The information provided is applicable to what is called
in-vessel composting, which we do not use."

I have attempted to get this point over to some of these
publishers, and have been met with a deafening silence. :-(

Exactly. "Compostible" does not mean it just sits on a compost heap
and rots down nicely like veg peelings or grass cuttings. Most of the
compostible "plastic" bags require a level of heat in the process that
isn't always available.

At least our kitchen waste is disposed of in a way that will cope with
the compostible bin liners. The garden waste is not.

Plant based plastic is still plastic, it just has different
ingredients!
