I just hope his muscle-torn abdomen recovers in time. Hate to see poor Djoke soldier through without full range of movement.

Probably the diplomatic thing. What he thinks is another matter. Best approach would be to just enjoy his money and let others scrap out who or if there's a GOAT. I'm sure Sampras didn't like his hard-fought 14 left in the dust, but he left a legacy to be proud of regardless.

1 thing Sampras has over Fed is he retired as slam goat and was the best

His record lasted shorter than Federer's, he had 9 years as the best but Fed took over in 2009 and is at least 12 years as the best. There are many things that Fed had over Sampras. More slam, more weeks as NO.1, more Wimbledon titles, more AO titles and more FO titles.

But Sampras was slam leader when he retired. Fed doesn't care about
comparing to Sampras in some stats as it was a different era. He cares
very much about falling short in his own era heading into retirement,
like Serena.

But that's ok. Sport isn't always about fairy tale endings, we need the
tragedy too. That makes the victories by other players more meaningful
as they could have fallen short like Roger & Serena.

Federer did something exceptional. We all know he played in not so competitive era mid 00s, but he crushed and beat everyone so he did what he was asked to do. Can't do better than that.

By the time Nadal/Djokovic fully emerged Federer had already achieved stuff like 5 straight Wim, 5 straight USO, 237 straight weeks at #1, slam record and now I understand better that it was hard for him to acknowledge the fact that they might be better than him or that they would eclipse him. Certainly not both of them. Who would have bet on that?

Just try picturing that? Him telling himself "I broke all the records, I'm a goat, but this guy who's a beast on clay, he's goat too. And the other guy who retires in matches, he's a goat too."

Lol impossible.

Federer is a bit stubborn and I guess all champions are. But you can't blame him for not grasping this.

Hazelwood predicted 18 slams for Federer and we all laughed. Imagine someone predicted cca 20 for all top 3 guys?

No way.

I believe the only time he went doing something without the feel he is better than Nadal or Djokovic was in 2016 when Ljubičić taught him new backhand.

Then he wins AO 2017 against Nadal and with Wim 2019, despite not winning it, those two slams redefine his career and leave him in boat debates.

And if he stays in boat debates, then he stays in goat debates as well.

But he should never forgive himself for trying, for the most part of his career, to beat Nadal/Djokovic playing from the baseline.

That was just gay.

He just thought he was the best at everything, even beating Rafa/Djoker
from baseline. It's good to be positive, but need to be realistic too.
He should have realized quicker that they were better from the
baseline & changed his game accordingly, like Sampras became 100%

I sometimes wonder how it would have turned out if Fed had been the younger one (5 years younger than Rafa/Djok). He probably would have tuned his game specifically to beat those two, and all the pressure would have been on them to stop the new upstart. Fed as the consistent underdog would have probably been more dangerous to them than how it was in reality.

great pt and one i've mentioned often. the stubborn tactic of allowing
nadal to break his BH over and over and over was just dumb, or
arrogant. IMO it was fear based. i believe fed could've beaten nadal a
few of those slams had he changed his tactic a bit.

Nothing wrong with good taste. Is he supposed to prefer players who hit the ball like apes? (although he did say he likes watching Isner....smh).

I wonder if Whisper finds his 9th haul... he was all gaga over Nadal winning his 9th FO. But that may be just to make Federer look bad ;-0)
This latest Djoker win is truly phenomenal. The guy just steps up no
matter how many times he's asked. Ironic he started career pulling out
of slams for seemingly trivial reasons and labeled choker, yet has
morphed into this mental giant made of diamond.

A typical clown era final. Who chjoked less wins. The "Tennis is dead"

Not until the big 3 retire. By then hopefully a couple Sinner type
