Given that 74m Americans just voted for the appalling Trump, do you have
any even vaguely practical suggestions? I can't think of any.

Speaking of primitive savagery and depressing things... Watched The Trial
of the Chicago 7 last night. It's a perfectly reasonable & watchable movie,
but geez, it's been 50 years since the Vietnam era and you're *still*
making movies about it. Move on.

I knew you weren't asking a serious question, just trolling. You moved
the goalposts from asking about "moral Germans", and received answers
you didn't like, to "acquiescence of the general populace" without
considering morals.

There are of course several books (requiring reading moviePig is
uninterested in) by Milton Mayer written 10 years after WWII, in which
he returned to Germany to interview ordinary Germans and their attitude
toward Nazism. The best known is They Thought They Were Free. Mayer does
not get into What did they know and when did they know it? accusations
for the most part.

Daniel Goldhagen wrote Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans
and the Holocaust (1996). It made quite a splash at the time; historians
raked it over the coals.

With two seconds of Googling, I came up with other articles that
ordinary Germans had some knowledge of what was going on.

Well, *I'm* still looking for a movie that'll help me to grasp
sensible, moral Germans vs. the Nazis. And I doubt I'll ever get a
grip on WW1...
Does it have to be in English? Here's a comparatively recent one about
Sophie Scholl, the most famous member of the White Rose resistance
movement:

<https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0426578/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0>

One about the Edelweiss Pirates:

<https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240473/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1>

And one about a lone wolf, Georg Elser:

<https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1708135/?ref_=kw_li_tt>

On the whole, though, the Nazis were extremely effective at targeting
opposition movements, their leaders, and even their rank and file. The
first people they killed (after culling perceived threats within their
own ranks) or sent to concentration camps were their political
opponents.

Valkyrie wasn't good enough for you?
A good movie, but the conspirators didn't seem to be motivated so much
by decency as by the pragmatic realization that Germany was going to
lose the war, and they wanted to sue for peace on the most favorable
possible terms.

Obviously I know the difference between a good movie and good history
- as a Canadian I am STILL massively outraged by Argo which gave all
the glory to the CIA and none at all to the Canadian diplomats without
whom the rescue couldn't have taken place - and even more so when they
got their Oscar that it was presented by the First Lady which is an
obvious sign Obama approved the "history". (Calling it "fake news"
would be generous)

But no question I'm also well aware the Valkyrie conspirators were at
least as driven by a desire to save their country's collective asses
as to bring peace and justice to Europe. (Or any other aims for that
matter)

As for "most favorable possible terms" who wouldn't seek those for
their country if they were in a position to do something about it?

The original question was about movies showing moral Germans during
WWII, though, not merely pragmatic Germans. Since the Valkyrie
conspirators had gone with the flow for over a decade, and didn't start
resisting Naziism until 1944, I presume that they would have continued to
at least tolerate their country's behavior had Germany been winning the
war.

America has done plenty of things worthy of praise - they don't have
to appropriate others'.

I enjoyed Saving Private Ryan though I thought the second half of the
movie (e.g. everything beyond that incredible D-Day scene) was
TV-movie grade at best. (Sherman tanks masquerading as Panzers etc) I
knew a man who had been a military policeman on D-Day and his job was
to STAY on the beaches and hustle troops off the beaches into the
safety of the woods beyond. He said that scene in SPR was extremely
intense but not too far off his experience that day.

Well yes I suppose you're right - and yes there WERE a lot of Germans
who didn't seriously question Nazism until the tide of war changed.

My reaction to _Saving Private Ryan_ was similar. The D-Day part was
riveting; the mission to extract one guy at the expense of several
others was only O.K.

Not that I can't appreciate people who have the common sense to wake up
and smell the coffee. One can at least deal with them on a practical
basis. The ones who keep driving their side further and further into
the abyss as well as taking everyone else down with them are essentially
nihilistic suicide cultists. But the people who speak out even before
the tide has turned are rarer.

Oh, yeah, it's definitely a different Germany today, although there were
fortunes amassed via slave labor that remained largely untouched in the
aftermath owing to the desire to use West Germany as a bulwark against
the Soviet bloc.

That's a funny thing. We don't know how many voted for Trump. Reality
Winner is in prison because she leaked a document saying the Russians

any even vaguely practical suggestions? I can't think of any.

Joe Biden: 81,268,924 - Winner.
Donald Trump 74,216,154 - Loser.

What the fuck? What is it with you? CAN'T you tell the truth any more?
Are you physically or psychologically incapable of it?

I've already said I made a mistake? But the truth doesn't seem to
register to you.
But, then... when have you EVER cared about accuracy?

Notice how Dimwit, won't accept that I simply explained your latest
idiocy. You ever hear of 'WIRED"? They think you're a fucking moron too.

"Using capital letters to indicate strong feeling may be the most famous
example of typographical tone of voice. But there are different kinds of
strong feelings. Linguist Maria Heath asked a cross section of internet
users to rate the difference in emotion between a message in all caps
and the same message in standard capitalization. She found that all-cap
styling made people judge happy messages as even happier: “IT’S MY
BIRTHDAY!!!” feels happier than “It’s my birthday!!!” But it didn’t make
sad messages any sadder: “i miss u” is just as pathetic as “I MISS U.”
When it came to anger, the results were mixed: Sometimes caps increased
the anger rating and sometimes they didn’t, a result which Heath
attributed to the difference between “hot” anger (FIGHT ME) and “cold”
anger (“fight me”).

A single capped word, on the other hand, is simply EMPHATIC. Looking at
examples of all-capped words on Twitter, Heath found that the most
common single ones included NOT, ALL, YOU, and SO, as well as
advertising words like WIN and FREE: the same kinds of words that are
often emphasized in spoken conversations (or commercials). When we want
to emphasize something in speech, we often pronounce it louder, faster,
or higher in pitch—or all three at once. All caps is a typographic way
of conveying the same set of cues."

Duuuuhhhhh. Seems like everybody BUT you knows what individual words
capitalized means on Usenet.

Here, let me repeat, because I KNOW your attention span is that of an
addled gnat.

Thin edge of the liberal gun-banning wedge. Deprive 60 MILLION gun owners of the RIGHTS because the odd loon. i've spoken to NRA people, They've no problem with wait periods OR background checks EXCEPT they know the libs would just use it as a stepping stone to much stronger gun control and bans on specific weapons. IF the libs would stipulate wait periods and background checks would be all they wanted to prevent these kinds of things and nothing else, then progress i preventing these shootings could begin.

Which is fitting, since Congress goes through the same motions every
