Just wondering

(assuming Windows)

Have others had any issues with TL installation where the installer was placed in a folder that was access via a UNC path or similar or via redirected folders (same thing)?

I have a user who has a Win10 from our UNI. It uses redirected folders, aka on UNI cabled network his Desktop and Documents folders are mapped onto a file server via UNC paths).

He was complaining that he could not install TL, something about Perl missing or similar. Turned out he has unpacked the ZIP installed on his Desktop. Everything worked fine, when we unpacked and ran it from Downloads

I wonder if it is worth mentioning this in in the TL manual?

Yes, it happens. It should be sufficient to map the folder so that it gets
a drive letter but I have not tried for TL. It helps with other installers.

I think that is enough, I'm just thinking it should be mentioned in the manual.

Sadly a lot of Windows users does not know the difference, between their (redirected) Desktop and the real location of the Desktop.

I regularly test with UNC paths, but redirected `known folders' are
another issue.

I have to think about what exactly to write about the muddle that
Microsoft has made of known folders, libraries, virtual or
otherwise, and the desktop in particular.

Actually, I do not understand what may have happened. The only thing
I can think of that there was a network hiccup and that the unpacked
installer was incompletely cached locally. Which would not rate a
warning in the manual.
