1967: Verenigd Koninkrijk

Op 4 augustus zijn er kwallen in het koelwatersysteem beland van de Ocean 7 (foto bovenaan), het zendschip van Radio 270. Het station was daardoor uit de lucht tot vandaag. Om gelijkaardige problemen te vermijden, kiest men ook betere ligplaats.

De tender Kangaroo van Radio Capital verlaat de haven van IJmuiden richting Engeland. Daar haalt men een aantal jeeps op die in West-Europa verkocht worden. Wat niemand weet, is dat in deze legervoertuigen twee generatoren en de 10 kW zender van het ter ziele gegane Radio 270 verborgen zitten. Op deze manier wordt de strenge Engelse anti-zeezenderswet omzeild.

Hi, guys. The Azanorak archive (www.azanorak.com) has been rather lacking in Radio 270 recordings up until now, with just a few from August 1967. Today I have been able to add 20 recordings of Radio 270 from 1966, all new to Azanorak, and I hope to be able to add more from earlier in 1967 next week.

Rather than list them individually here, I suggest you either navigate to the Radio 270 folder from the home page above, or go to it using the direct link below. Then, login to your account, and simply select and download all the files you are interested in.

I have listened to all of these recordings myself, and verified dates, times and presenter names as far as possible through on-air comments, news items and record chart positions. Following my recent postings of recordings of Radio 270, Matt Ashman of ThePirateArchive.net contacted me again with some more recordings from the archive of Leon Tipler. Matt says:

"Sadly, Leon passed away a few years ago. I knew Leon a little bit, and a mutual friend asked me (to) help out with digitising his archive. Leon was on Radio's City and 270 in the 60s and later did recorded shows on Radio Atlantis as Scott Mitchell. In the 1980s he did production for Sunshine Radio in Ludlow and produced the Irish Pirates documentary for Alfasound."

Unfortunately it seems that Leon scoped quite a few of his recordings of Radio 270, so some of the ones below are not complete except, curiously, for his own breakfast shows!

Also, there is about a 17 minute recording of Leon reminiscing about the offshore stations in general, but mostly about his time on Radio 270 in particular.

Er breekt enorme paniek uit bij de organisatie van Radio 270 wanneer een anonieme beller meldt dat er aan boord hun zendschip, de Ocean 7 (foto bovenaan op die link), een bom is geplaatst. Achteraf blijkt het om een flauwe grap te gaan.

– Technische moeilijkheden zijn een spelbreker tijdens de opstartfase van Radio 270. Het zendschip 'Oceaan 7' kreeg averij en moest voor herstellingswerken de haven opzoeken. Na het aanvoeren van nieuwe zenderonderdelen beginnen vandaag testuitzendingen op 269 meter middengolf (AM 1115 kHz) met een vermogen van 10 kW voor de omgeving van Yorkshire. Als eerste plaat wordt ‘Strangers In The Night’ van Frank Sinatra gedraaid.
