Telephone Baby - Werly Fairburn
http://youtu.be/qX8ecG212Iw
From 1957 comes Werly's last outing for Granpa Herman's Savoy
label---and his last record for several years ('tis 1962 before I can
trace another release by him). It's not great but I quite liked his
earlier "All The Time" on Savoy (one of their few 1950's singles
released over here on London label) but this one just reminds me of
some of those very second rate Haley numbers

I Dreamed I Was Elvis - Sonny Cole and the Rhythm Roamers
http://youtu.be/L8XTkLHqVuM
Originally on California's Excel label (#123) in May 1957 this was the
"A" side to Sonny's "Curfew Cops" that was one of my nominations in
the August contest last year. Tho I like that side best "I Dreamed I
Was Elvis" is extremely decent in itself and likewise was a firm
favourite on the rockabilly circuit---so much so that it was heavily
booted back in the 70's and finally reissued on Ronny Weiser's Rollin'
Rock imprint

You Made Me Love You- Sensations
http://youtu.be/koviEAKzMpE
One of those songs that I usually don't care for (always conjures up
that famous movie moment of a pubescent Judy Garland warbling the
ditty to a pic of her idol Clark Gable) but Yvonne & co do a fairly
reasonable version in 1957---tho I admit to having a small soft spot
for the original Jolie version (from the 1913 Broadway show "The
Honeymoon Express")
Post by SavoyBG
Clifton Chenier - Ay-Tete-Fee
http://youtu.be/L6u90Q_283s
Over here at least the instrumental flipside "Boppin' The Rock" became
THE side and one that sold consistently well in our store (and the one
that was in the 1955 Singles Battle as well as the Instrumentals
Battle) but I like this excellent nominated side better still (enough
to give it an "8") and it really SHOULD have taken part in that battle

You Got To Run Me Down - Jazz Gillum
http://youtu.be/JvwmkcZEIrQ
Pretty good proto-rocker for 1947. Recorded April 24 that year in
Chicago Jazz Gillum (vcl hca) Eddie Boyd (pno) Willie Lacey (gtr)
Ransom Knowling (bs) Judge Lawrence Riley (dms). Released on RCA
20-2405 later that September

MY RANKINGS

1. I Dreamed I Was Elvis - Sonny Cole and the Rhythm Roamers
2. Telephone Baby - Werly Fairburn
3. Clifton Chenier - Ay-Tete Fee
4. You Got To Run Me Down - Jazz Gillum
5. You Made Me Love You- Sensations

Sorry, Bill, but I don't even file this corny Sensations record. You should have nominated "My Debut To Love" or "Ain't He Sweet" instead.

It's ALBENNIE Jones and the title as per the Decca 78 is "Give It Up

And yes I have it as 1947

And no (best of all!) it wasn't in a previous contest :)

Thanks. I got the other spelling of her name from the graphic on the
Youtube link I posted. Check it out.
That's a correct name she used too and some earlier records appear
under it. I think all her Decca stuff uses the "Albennie" name though
as her later (1949---and best IMO--- "Hole In The Wall" does but for
some reason YT don't like it as I see Oke She Moke's posting of the
latter title has been taken down.

Here's the track under her other name. Note the early use of the term
"rock 'n' roll" :-

An amazing comeback by the Sensations record to get back in contention to advance. It had 4 straight lasts, and then got a first and three seconds. With Doo Wop Rick one of the 3 people still left to vote it's looking pretty good now.
