Taking A Time Out

I woke up the next morning
with freeze frame memories
in that February gloom.

Stepped out of the
creepy boarding house
locked the door
to my little room.

Walked across the park
to that little creek
I saw Paige across the way
roller skating on the ice.

I had an awareness
of her copper colored eyes.

interlude
from the days of love and rage.
She smiles through the mist
she turns the page.

It was cold
the sky was grey
I lit my pipe
there was a little spark
of flame.

Paige skated over
and sat next to me
by that old abandoned train.

We talked of airwaves and poetry
and a mansion on the hill.

But now
everything's changed
I don't even know how
I guess I never will.

Taking a time out
from the love and rage
Paige waves sideways
as she skates away
she turns the page.

It's been forty years now
I went back
and retraced my steps.

Walked by and looked
where the old boarding house was
there was nothing of it left.

I walked across the park
to that little creek
I sat down under
that same old tree.

I felt a little tingle
in the air,
I felt like her ghost
was sitting there with me.

Interlude
from the days of love and rage.

Paige smiles at me
through the mist
like a winter ghost
then she fades away.

Brian Mallard and Jack Snipe have a nice guitar riff, we just need to put it all together in the studio.

It is in the process of becoming a song, yes.
Brian Mallard and Jack Snipe have a nice guitar riff, we just need to put it all together in the studio.

I see new live shows are coming, as well....
Will Dockery will be appearing live at the Chuckle Hut and the Pizza Barn for karaoke nights, respectively.

Taking A Time Out
I woke up the next morning
with freeze frame memories
in that February gloom.
Stepped out of the
creepy boarding house
locked the door
to my little room.
Walked across the park
to that little creek
I saw Paige across the way
roller skating on the ice.
I had an awareness
of her copper colored eyes.
interlude
from the days of love and rage.
She smiles through the mist
she turns the page.
It was cold
the sky was grey
I lit my pipe
there was a little spark
of flame.
Paige skated over
and sat next to me
by that old abandoned train.
We talked of airwaves and poetry
and a mansion on the hill.
But now
everything's changed
I don't even know how
I guess I never will.
Taking a time out
from the love and rage
Paige waves sideways
as she skates away
she turns the page.
It's been forty years now
I went back
and retraced my steps.
Walked by and looked
where the old boarding house was
there was nothing of it left.
I walked across the park
to that little creek
I sat down under
that same old tree.
I felt a little tingle
in the air,
I felt like her ghost

that same old tree.
I felt a little tingle

I felt like her ghost
was sitting there with me.
Interlude

Paige smiles at me
through the mist
like a winter ghost
then she fades away.

Quite cogent...
Thanks for the nod, Zod.
This was in the works as a song a while back, correct...?
It is in the process of becoming a song, yes.
Brian Mallard and Jack Snipe have a nice guitar riff, we just need to put it all together in the studio.
;)
I see new live shows are coming, as well....
Yes, the nightclubs are slowly reopening around here.
Great! More karaoke chances for you to look like a stumbling drunk with Tourette's Syndrome.
Heh... so you watch my videos, after all?

Taking A Time Out
I woke up the next morning
with freeze frame memories
in that February gloom.
Stepped out of the
creepy boarding house
locked the door
to my little room.
Walked across the park
to that little creek
I saw Paige across the way
roller skating on the ice.
I had an awareness
of her copper colored eyes.
interlude
from the days of love and rage.
She smiles through the mist
she turns the page.
It was cold
the sky was grey
I lit my pipe
there was a little spark
of flame.
Paige skated over
and sat next to me
by that old abandoned train.
We talked of airwaves and poetry
and a mansion on the hill.
But now
everything's changed
I don't even know how
I guess I never will.
Taking a time out
from the love and rage
Paige waves sideways
as she skates away
she turns the page.
It's been forty years now
I went back
and retraced my steps.
Walked by and looked
where the old boarding house was
there was nothing of it left.
I walked across the park
to that little creek
I sat down under
that same old tree.
I felt a little tingle

I felt like her ghost

You just called my brother a dwarf, the most trollish statements I've seen here in a while.
Isn't he? He's got the stunted growth and distorted features (acromegaly) associated with dwarfism.

Again, this is in no way meant as an insult -- just a spot diagnosis.

Taking A Time Out
I woke up the next morning
with freeze frame memories
in that February gloom.
Stepped out of the
creepy boarding house
locked the door
to my little room.
Walked across the park
to that little creek
I saw Paige across the way
roller skating on the ice.
I had an awareness
of her copper colored eyes.
interlude
from the days of love and rage.
She smiles through the mist
she turns the page.
It was cold
the sky was grey
I lit my pipe
there was a little spark
of flame.
Paige skated over
and sat next to me
by that old abandoned train.
We talked of airwaves and poetry
and a mansion on the hill.
But now
everything's changed
I don't even know how
I guess I never will.
Taking a time out
from the love and rage
Paige waves sideways
as she skates away
she turns the page.
It's been forty years now
I went back
and retraced my steps.
Walked by and looked
where the old boarding house was
there was nothing of it left.
I walked across the park
to that little creek
I sat down under
that same old tree.
I felt a little tingle
in the air,
I felt like her ghost
was sitting there with me.
Interlude
from the days of love and rage.
Paige smiles at me
through the mist
like a winter ghost
then she fades away.

We agree, and the fact that Brother Dave is in a child's plastic lawn chair is another clue. Does he drive, and if he does, does he use a booster seat? Being that short, he could be decapitated if the air bags deployed. In most of the pictures, he not only looks as if he doesn't know where he is but who he is. It's sad that Will ridicules his brother in this way.

You've added an inch to your height since last you'd measured in. But 4' (give or take a couple inches either way) seems about right.

There is help out there for Brother Dave. He doesn't have to be alone, with just Will for company. There are support groups and social groups such as: Short Society, Dwarfs 4 Christ, Dwarfism Alternative Dating, Date A Little, and Short Passions. We all could contribute towards a winning profile for Dave to post on a dating site.

What do you get out of lying about Dave, "Nancy G."...?

Taking A Time Out
I woke up the next morning
with freeze frame memories
in that February gloom.
Stepped out of the
creepy boarding house
locked the door
to my little room.
Walked across the park
to that little creek
I saw Paige across the way
roller skating on the ice.
I had an awareness
of her copper colored eyes.
interlude
from the days of love and rage.
She smiles through the mist
she turns the page.
It was cold
the sky was grey
I lit my pipe
there was a little spark
of flame.
Paige skated over
and sat next to me
by that old abandoned train.
We talked of airwaves and poetry
and a mansion on the hill.
But now
everything's changed
I don't even know how
I guess I never will.
Taking a time out
from the love and rage
Paige waves sideways
as she skates away
she turns the page.
It's been forty years now
I went back
and retraced my steps.
Walked by and looked
where the old boarding house was
there was nothing of it left.
I walked across the park
to that little creek
I sat down under
that same old tree.
I felt a little tingle
in the air,
I felt like her ghost
was sitting there with me.
Interlude
from the days of love and rage.
Paige smiles at me
through the mist
like a winter ghost
then she fades away.

"That" denotes that the object (in this case, the train) has previously been mentioned in the text. It hasn't, so Will and Paige should be sitting "by an old abandoned train."
What kind of "park" contains abandoned trains?
Good correction, thanks, and I'm glad you asked that, because (at least 40 years ago, when the poem takes place) one well-known feature of Piedmont Park was the "abandoned" train. For example:

https://ilivetotravel.me/atlanta-piedmont-park-midtown-oasis/

"Sadly, the old railroad line that used to run along its eastern edge has disappeared (at least part of it) — Atlanta may be one of very few places were destroying history is celebrated as “progress” [...] I enjoyed climbing an old train there once in the younger days. But all in the name of progress and of creating a better park space in the midst of the hustle-and-bustle that we call Atlanta..."

Two sentence fragments strung together do not make a sentence. The subject is missing: "I stepped out of the creepy boarding house." "I locked the door to my little room."
The imaginatively descriptive adjectives, "creepy" and "little," (sarcasm alert!) are so clichéd as to make me suspect that I'm being treated to an example of cutting edge camp.

But where in the poem's narrative did he do this?

AFAICS, he woke up, walked out of his creepy boarding house, ran into Paige in the park, spoke of cabbages and kings, got dumped, revisited the park many years later.

Going on with one's life for 40 years is hardly my conception of an "interlude."

But be that as it may. How does Doc's supposed interlude constitute a message?

It's not that bad. AFter the interlude, i.e. some time between a tempestuous relationship and seeing he ex by chance, Paige had tured a page and is no longer passionate but merely coolly friendly.

Yes, that bit needs some changes, to get the image across that I locked two doors, one to my room and also to the front door of the rooming house... renters there had two keys.

Yes, if the poem is read in context, as in a chapbook collection, the train would have been mentioned in a previous poem, but I agree it should be changed for a stand-alone.

Good correction, thanks,
If you are serious about wanting to improve your poem, you'll need to ask yourself what you are trying to express.

The only thing I get from this poem is that you once were romantically involved (to a, thankfully, unspecified degree) with a girl named Paige... and that Paige was the one who'd ended the relationship.

That's a memory -- not a poem.

How does this knowledge interest or appertain to your readers? Does it hint at any revelation about life in general?

This has been a big problem with the bulk of your Sampler poems this year. They all give the impression of an old man looking through a photograph album, pointing to a girl's picture, mumbling a few disjointed memory fragments, then... wait for it... turning the page.

Why does Paige's memory linger like a ghost? What did Paige mean to the speaker? In the poem, she's just a girl who'd made the typical "lovers' talk" about someday living together in a beautiful house (or, a mansion on the hill)... then moved on to a new lover.

That'll work fine as the subject of a country music song, but it's not going to cut it as a poem.

Paige skated over
and sat next to me
by that old abandoned train.
"That" denotes that the object (in this case, the train) has previously been mentioned in the text. It hasn't, so Will and Paige should be sitting "by an old abandoned train."
What kind of "park" contains abandoned trains?
Good correction, thanks,
If you are serious about wanting to improve your poem, you'll need to ask yourself what you are trying to express.

Doc was taking an interlude from what? And prior to what?

FYI: And interlude is not a suppository form of quaalude.

Your lack of understanding of Doc's poem is amazing...
He took an interlude from the "love and rage"...

Interlude
from the days of love and rage.
She smiles through the mist
she turns the page.

But where in the poem's narrative did he do this?
In the entire poem.... his interlude from fighting ("love and rage") was with Paige....

A simple, and very good, poem....

Although he is incorrect about the poem...
No he wasn’t. Y’all can call something modern poetry, but it doesn’t make it modern poetry.
30 to 50 lines of random, drug addled gibberish doesn’t constitute modern poetry.
And one doesn’t have to be deeply adept in all things poetry to make that distinction.

I’ve explained this to will before:
Just because a cat has kittens in an oven, it doesn’t make them biscuits.

Taking A Time Out
I woke up the next morning
with freeze frame memories
in that February gloom.
Stepped out of the
creepy boarding house
locked the door
to my little room.
Walked across the park
to that little creek
I saw Paige across the way
roller skating on the ice.
I had an awareness
of her copper colored eyes.
interlude
from the days of love and rage.
She smiles through the mist
she turns the page.
It was cold
the sky was grey
I lit my pipe
there was a little spark
of flame.
Paige skated over
and sat next to me
by that old abandoned train.
We talked of airwaves and poetry
and a mansion on the hill.
But now
everything's changed
I don't even know how
I guess I never will.
Taking a time out
from the love and rage
Paige waves sideways
as she skates away
she turns the page.
It's been forty years now
I went back
and retraced my steps.
Walked by and looked
where the old boarding house was
there was nothing of it left.
I walked across the park
to that little creek
I sat down under
that same old tree.
I felt a little tingle
in the air,
I felt like her ghost
was sitting there with me.
Interlude
from the days of love and rage.
Paige smiles at me
through the mist
like a winter ghost
then she fades away.

Two sentence fragments strung together do not make a sentence. The subject is missing: "I stepped out of the creepy boarding house." "I locked the door to my little room."
One would lock the door to the room before exiting the house.

The imaginatively descriptive adjectives, "creepy" and "little," (sarcasm alert!) are so clichéd as to make me suspect that I'm being treated to an example of cutting edge camp.
"little" is too common to be a cliche

A fragment stuck onto a sentence does not make a longer sentence: it turns an actual sentence into gibberish.
But "roller skating on the ice" is a nice phrase.

Hmm... Will staggers out of his boarding house and makes a bee-line for the little girl ice skating in the park. Fortunately, he's not your average dirty old man, as the first thing he notices are her eyes.

Interlude
from the days of love and rage.
She smiles through the mist
she turns the page.
A fragment followed by two unrelated sentence that have been inexplicably strung together equals zero actual sentences.
The intended pun on "page" and "Paige" is abysmal.
It's not that bad. AFter the interlude, i.e. some time between a tempestuous relationship and seeing he ex by chance, Paige had tured a page and is no longer passionate but merely coolly friendly.

Four short sentences strung together equals zero actual sentences. Generally, pipes don't shoot out sparks of flame. One wonders what Will might have packed his with.
The little spark of a flame is all that's left of a roaring fire. This could use punctuation, though.
