Named: Fabulous Fifties (50s Rock'N'Roll, Doo Wop And Rockabilly)
(not much R&B, 38K members)
(this group was suggested to me today by FB in an email, amongst 5
other groups of similar ilk)

(stereo!)

Nostalgic Comments include:

The "Ut Oh" intro by Frazier was his reaction to making a mistake
on an earlier take . The producers liked it and it became part of the
original recording ... I have to say that its the worst syncro dancing
I have ever seen {smile!} ...great vid tho

Everyone {mostly girls} in the audience is chewing Beechnut gum
(American Bandstand's sponsor)
The "IFIC" labels are for Doublemint Spearmint gum, dubbed
"Flavorific".

I have fond memories of the Dick Clark Show. Saturdays at 7:30.
Gotta love the audience clapping out of sync and on the upbeat! LOL

This is such feel-good music. It's such a shame nobody makes music
like this anymore.

Reached No 2 On the US singles chart

Funny to see these videos, and then someone says: that's my
granddad!! or grandmother.. awesome..

Great song. Love that this is an inter-racial group - which must
have been pretty controversial back in the 1950's. Singing and dancing
in suits and ties seems very quaint today.

Did you know the group got their name from a new Chevrolet recently
purchased by their parents? Chevy introduced the Impala model in
1958..

Im 18 and if it wasnt for car shows and hotrodding I wouldnt be
listening to this stuff. I love it always sets the mood for old school
car cruising.

Point taken regarding tooth decay, but, to be pedantic, I doubt the

chewed gum to any extent :-)

You must have missed many six monthly dental checkups back then - or
your visit to the oral surgeon had nothing to do with Spearmint :-)

Never missed a dental checkup. There was no sugarless gum back then.
There were no dental implants either, but thankfully we have them now,
and they are worth every cent.

In the interest of comparing notes what kind of figure would your

charge someone for their regular six monthly visit if everything
checked out ok and no other treatment was required?

Here oral surgeons are not dentists. They do tooth implants, wisdom
teeth removal, and other bloody stuff. They charge exorbitant sums.
Dentists do cleanings and fillings and crowns. An ordinary checkup here
in Wisconsin costs about $125, though prices, as they say, may vary,
and x-rays are extra.

I'm glad to hear you now have dentists. When I lived in England I
somehow thought the Brits had to make do without them. :-)

I guess if you need that kind of work done here the local dentist may
pass you on to some practioner higher in the league table but I don't
know---luckily I've never needed anything more than the normal dentist
provides (and yes I still have all my own teeth).

My normal 6 monthly checkup with just cleaning done is usually about
25 GBP = about 30 USD.

I'm happy you've made so much progress. I cracked wise because I've
never before read a book about the Beatles and now am doing so (Bob
Spitz's and it's really good), and happened just a couple of days ago
to come across this bit of local color about the Beatles first trip
back to Liverpool after the mania set in:

³For his part, John could not resist the knife. ³You want to get some
teeth for these people who are cheering us,² John advised the Lord
Mayor, who seemed befuddled by the outrageous remark. (Little did he
realize the extent of the Beatles¹ worldly exposure, having witnessed
firsthand the superiority of other cultures¹ hygiene. The contrast,
glaring in front of them now, with rows of ³gap-toothed grins,² was
shocking.) ²

An internet source that supports the above list:

"The U.K. shares an identical DMFT score with Sweden, making it into
the top five as well. This score is particularly interested because of
the old (now untrue) stereotype of British citizens with bad teeth."
WHO - I'm sure their latest list has Trump's "CHI-na" at #1 :-)

Joking aside, I'm wary of this list.
Where is Norway, Holland, New Zealand... - "bubbling under" perhaps
:-)

UK ahead of Switzerland ?
Mexico at #8 worldwide ?
However, Denmark ranked #1 *is* believable.

I'm glad to hear you now have dentists. When I lived in England I
somehow thought the Brits had to make do without them. :-)
Apparently they still don't have dentists in parts of the North of
England - in the light of a recent segment in the 6 o'clock BBC news,
in which a middle-aged couple were interviewed in their garden about
their experiences of living under lockdown (the lady's teeth, OMG...).

For Roger at least,

Talking about covid-19, the two biggest 'murderous' UK scandals, it
seems to me, are:

1. allowing (after February) well over 10 million people to arrive in
the UK from overseas without testing and without requiring them to
self-isolate for two weeks. (one reason as to why, the virus mostly
affects 'disposable' low-income folk [because of their lifestyle],
and the middle-middle and upper-middle classes would have been
otherwise greatly inconvenienced; and there would have been
opposition from the 'well connected' board and shareholders of
British Airways, etc).

I read that Australia (population 25 million [with over 85% living
in urban areas] with covid-19 deaths being 98 so far; UK population
is 68 million with unofficial covid-19 deaths of over 40,000 so
far) has been quarantining all international arrivals in hotels for
two weeks (from midnight, March 28).

2. ** transferring elderly people from NHS hospitals to care homes
without testing them (up until April 15 that is) for the virus **,
resulting in an estimated 23,000 deaths (40% official total
deaths from virus, plus 10,000 unexplained 'excess' deaths over
past years).

And, recommendations arising from earlier virus-gaming exercises in
the UK were not acted upon, resulting in an appalling lack of PPE when
the pandemic eventually arrived. NHS hospitals were given priority
over care homes, meaning the latter often went without adequate PPE.

Absolutely right!

Letting foreign arrivals into UK willy nilly with no virus checks at
all has been a total unmitigated disaster. We should have followed the
examples of other countries (including USA) at the start of the crisis
in invoking speedy bans on much foreign arrival traffic

easier to attain by our incredibly short sighted refusal to close our

Might that be because we are doing more intensive testing?

In MIchigan and specifically Detroit area intensive testing is being
done. IMO if you are in good health with no underlying conditions it
doesn't show or the symptoms are mild.

The Detroit police chief, a television anchorman et al all have
recovered with no hospitalization. BTW they are both black.
OTOH in Detroit they are dropping like flies because they are an
unhealthy lot, mostly self inflicted.

The fact is we live in an unhealthy country with two-thirds overweight
with a predicted 50% obesity rate by the end of the decade
One in four adults 65 or over are on five on medications.

On the news the other day there was a story about a man that had just
had the virus and just got out of the hospital after six weeks. So
what do you think he said was the first place he went. Get some White
Castle hamburgers. For those that don't know those are little greasy
burgers.

Then when some one like him end belly up we'll have to hear how
disparity in healthcare did him in other than his stupidity. The
pastors that should be serving as good examples are virtually
all obese too.

Doug, are you a fan of Bill Maher? What you wrote here is almost word
for word what he keeps saying on his show.
Personally, I think obesity--and certainly diabetes--are risk factors,
but not the only risk factors. I just read a harrowing account by a
33-year-old NYTimes reporter, physically fit with no underlying
conditions, of her bout with the illness and the consequent pneumonia
she still struggles with.

I cut the cord 3 1/2 years ago so I have no idea what Maher has said
since then.

The black community has several problems that aren't going to be
solved to them. As Frederick Douglas once said< I paraphrase, there
those that are perfectly happy with the conditions because they profut
from keeping them. Can you say Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton among
others.

IMO most of the "black leaders" are both pimps and whores. Pimps as
they sellout their people and whores as the prostitute themselves for
their white master liberals.

40% of Detroiters now live in poverty in a city run by Democrats since
1969. I don't know what the out-of-wedlock birth rate today is, but in
the 1980"s it was 80%+. I don't imagine that it went down. You don't
hear a peep out the black leaders.

Blacks continue to gorge themselves with fast food, fried foods,
gallons of soft drinks, Kool-aid etc. Is it any wonder why they end up
why they end up fat at the least and mostly obese with diabetes,
heart problems, "hi-blood" and more. Yet "black leaders" whine about
healthcare as if the system caused the problems.

After I got my Medicare Advantage plan I was asked to attend a focus
group that consisted of three black women and myself.

First we were asked about our doctors. The women rattled of theirs and
their different ailments when they got to me I said "Doctor? I don't
go to the doctor because other than an occassional cold, I haven't had
one in 20 years, I don't get sick." At that time three years ago I
hadn't seen a doctor since 1985 and then it was for a physical which
told me what I aleady knew. I was in excellent health. Acouple years
ago I got a wellness check-up only because they gave me a $15 gift
card. Same results. I'm probably healthier than i was in 1985. Why,
because I've made some common sense descions.

Oh but you say you have good genes. Everyone on my father's side died
of heart problems with my father living the longest, dying at a shade
over 61. My sister who is four years older is obese, on so many meds
that she needs one of those things you put te pills in so she doesn't
miss taking them. BTW I'm 5' 7" lbs don't exercise, but will be cause
my I know I should and my MA plan includes a fre gym membership.

I was thinking living to 91 was a reasonable expectation, but after
reading the obituaries, want to make my name isn't in them ;>), I see
people living well into their 90s and even a couple 100s. So the
hundreds are now my goal.

While not the only one, bad health is by far the greatest risk factor.

You have a point. The blacks really like their fried chicken.

Diet isn't the only factor to staying healthy or living a long life.
The big one is DNA.

Bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Are you trying to tell me that al these overweight/ obese blacks that
have hi-blood, heart disease, diabetes etc is attributed to bad DNA?

Jim, have you ever heard the saying "you are what you eat."

BTW Whites these days are on the same path as Blacks.

I have the same DNA as my sister yet she is obese, only God knows how
many meds and has some sort of dementia. Other than the dementia part
the other has been true for years.

Not that I've ever been fat, sick or ate much fast food I changed my
eating habits 35 years ago and continue to do so today. As the guy in
the Teeter commercial says "I feel great."

I'm 73, but don't feel it or according to people look it either.

Like I said there is a history of heart disease in my family, knowing
so I took appropriate action.

I believe in self-responsibility.

Jesus, did I say that diet had nothing to do with it? Read it again.
"Diet isn't the only factor...." That means, yes, it is a factor. Try
to put on a knee jerk restraint. You can't control who your parents
are. I am the only one in my family that is still living. Sorry your
sister got the "black bean," as one of my doctors used to say.

My family was full of heart disease, high blood pressure and some
obesity. I have never been obese, but I have heart disease, I have
high blood pressure, I have asthma, I have kidney disease, GERD, and
have some arthritis in my right hip. I will be 79 in August and I can
compete with you on "how young you look." I changed my eating habits
over 20 years ago after I had a heart attack. Until the recent
pandemic came around, I went to the gym 3 days a week to work out. I
weigh 155 to 157 on an average day, and still mow my own yard every
week.

In my case, all of these issues are under control because I have been
fortunate enough to have good health care at my disposal and have
taken care of myself, not unlike you have.

Having access to good health care is not available to everyone. It is
out of the reach of many.

Glad to hear you are doing well.

other groups.

and proud of it.

In Alan Greenspan's book the Age of Turbulence he recounts of during
the depression going to the beach to look for coins in the sand. When
Today when asked why he walks with his head down he says "I'm looking

Okay, so how do you explain your President, same age as you, doesn't
smoke or drink but absolutely terrible diet and is obese even if not
"morbidly" so. I repeat, terrible diet, way overweight, no exercise to
speak of (never walks when he can use golf cart)...why is he in such
robust good health? He himself credits his genes and for once (just
this once) I have to agree with him.

No, they had Hillary up 2-3 points., which is where it ended up (48-46). She only lost because of the archaic "electoral college." It's the only election in the world where you can get the most votes and not win.

For the record and to be clear on this. The reply I made to Bruce's
statement when I wrote "Correctomundo" was directed to his comment on
the Electoral College and not the 2016 vote polling numbers prior to
it. The EC is an abomination and a process that is clearly capable of
corruption and is failing democracy. I am an advocate to put it down
the shitter where it belongs. We aren't 13 colonies any longer and it
does not serve democracy to have the same 4 - 5 states deciding our
election every four years. 1 person, 1 vote. There are organizations
in America out to put it to pasture. I support them. I won't live to

Anyone born in the US is a US citizen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizenship

Born within a country (jus soli). Some people are automatically citizens of the state in which they are born. This form of citizenship originated in England, where those who were born within the realm were subjects of the monarch (a concept pre-dating citizenship) and is common in common law countries. Most countries in the Americas grant unconditional jus soli citizenship, while it has been limited or abolished in almost all other countries.

You may have stuttered, but you probably didn't studder. If you did, you inserted hairsprings into watch studs.

I won't live to
see it and maybe none of us will. But I think, eventually, that it
will go.
Do you think people that come here illegally, had children, that those
children should automatically become American citizens?
That's what the law is, if you're born here you're a citizen. If we have to love with that dopey electoral college you have to live with that.
That can't be exactly true---there must be more hurdles to jump than
just happening to get born there.
After all our current PM Boris Johnson was famously born on the Upper

Citizenship
British
United States (1964–2016)

Having been born in New York City to British parents, Johnson at first held United Kingdom–United States dual citizenship. In 2014, he acknowledged he was disputing a demand for capital gains tax from the US tax authorities on a property that he inherited in the United Kingdom, which ultimately he paid. In February 2015, he announced his intention to renounce his US citizenship to demonstrate his loyalty to the UK, which he did in 2016.

“They were tired, impatient, frustrated. They cobbled together this
plan because they couldn’t agree on anything else.”

Slavery and the Three-Fifths Compromise

The Constitution says nothing about how the states should allot their
electoral votes.

The Founders also assumed that most elections would ultimately be
decided by neither the people nor the electors, but by the House of
Representatives. According to the Constitution, if no single candidate
wins a majority of the electoral votes, the decision goes to the
House, where each state gets one vote.

The party in power typically benefits from the existence of the
Electoral College and the minority party has little chance of changing
the system because a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds
supermajority in Congress plus ratification by three-fourths of the
states--the perfect rigged system.

The one and only benefit of the EC is that it prevents a chance of a
run-off election or a protracted national recount. Not good enough to
keep it as far as I am concerned.

No more from me on this.

Polls had Hillary in a landslide two weeks before the '16 election!!
No, they had Hillary up 2-3 points., which is where it ended up (48-46). She only lost because of the archaic "electoral college." It's the only election in the world where you can get the most votes and not win.
No it's not. An example to the contrary is Class A vs. Class B shares in a corporation. Class A shares might have five votes while class B may have one. If there were five voters and four class B holders voted for one person while one class A holder voted for another person, the latter would win due to the weighting of the votes.

The board of a corporation is selected by election, so my example stands.

In any event, Roger provided a better example, to which you have so far failed to respond.

No,thats not so

There is the example of the 1951 British General Election which saw
the Conservative Party win 48% of the vote to 48.8% for Labour.

Yet there was a Conservative majority and Winston Churchill was
returned as Prime Minister

If that is the case Trump is going to get another four since Biden
can't tell the difference between his wife and sister and told Blacks
in South Carolina that he was "running for the U.S. Senate and if they
didn't vote for him vote for the other Biden on the ticket."

What's was Biden using the term "man" all the time.

I see Biden stuck his foot in his mouth again, but that's nothing new.

constantly challenging people o push-up contests, fights, etc take a

Okay, so how do you explain your President, same age as you, doesn't
smoke or drink but absolutely terrible diet and is obese even if not
"morbidly" so. I repeat, terrible diet, way overweight, no exercise to
speak of (never walks when he can use golf cart)...why is he in such

There is always exceptions to the rule.

How do you explain if DNA is such a great factor that blacks have so
much bad DNA?

Their DNA got fucked up over several hundred years as slaves with poor diets as the masters gave them all the worst parts of the foods.
Yet 150+ years later they continue eating poor diets and the "worst
food."

A couple weeks ago I was watching the tv program In the Neighborhood.
In it the black Butler family takes the white neighbor family to a
Soul Food restaurant. While looking at the menu the white neighbor
Dave asks "What are Chitterlings." To which the black Calvin character
played by Cedric the Entertainer, replies "that's Chittlins (sp?) and
they are a black delicacy. No they are pig guts.

I've been in many black house where they were cooking them and the
place smelled like shit.

In particulars I was in a house where a black Judy Woodruff lived. It
was in the winter and the temperature was cranked up so high there was
condensation on the windows and the place stank. Judy looked at me and
said "this is a nasty lunch" to which I readily nodded.

If chittlins are such a delicacy my do they when eating them drowned
in hot sauce?

During the week in between watching PBS News Hour and Jeopardy I watch
Family Feud. The winner gets a chance to win "$20,000 bucks" by
accumulating 200 points by matching answers of a survey.

Steve Harvey asks 100 people were asked to name something you fill-up?
The natural answer would be your gas tank, but the black guy says "The
Kool-Aid pitcher. Another time the question was name something sweet?
The black guy answers Kool-Aid. Finally there is the name a flavor to
which black guy answers "red."

In slaves times there was no Mountain Dew, Jay's Hot potato chips,
etc yet Blacks continue this diet yet eat pork products pig's feet,,
tails, maws, head cheese among trash .

I live in what I think is a still middle class, black majority city
(80+), with the 2020 census it wouldn't surprise if it went 90%.

In Kroger they are now carrying chittlins, pigs feet, etc. Ok I
understand eating the pork trash parts if you can't afford anything
else, but that isn't the case in Southfield.

Last summer a couple picnic tables were put out front of Kroger. I
assumed that they were for employees to use during their breaks.
Quickly some thought it was there for them to hangout.

After complaining to Kroger, nothing getting done. I notified the
Mayor, City Council and in two days the tables as well as the
hangouters were gone.

This April it was like the Swallows returning to Caoistran, the
hangouts were back sitting on the benches drinking again.
BTW they don't even buy the beer from Kroger, but from the liquor sore
across the street.

I was getting ready to complain again, but suddenly the benches
disappeared along with the hangouters.

About two weeks ago, I notice on the other side of the stripe mall the
hangouters have return. Now that have taken shopping carts, turned
them over to sit on while drinking beer, eating greasy snacks and
grooving to whatever they are listening to on headphones.

Southfield isn't the ghetto, but its getting there.

Edmund Burke said "All that is necessary for the Triumph of Evil is
for good men to do nothing." I think that's why this ghetto behavior
goes on. This only causes decent people to leave.

I suggest people read the book Black Picket Fences and then they
understand why people, blacks as well as whites, don't want to live in
black majority cities.

I'm not offended by alcohol and/or pork. I'm offended that my city is
becoming ghettoized. When stuff like this goes on decent people leave.
Then idiot scratch their head and wonder why.

I spoke to someone at the Southfield Police Department who called it
the "Detroit Problem." For a deeper insight I suggest you read the
book Black Picket Fences.

BTW there is no local mosques that I know of.

A couple years ago I went to an event at the Southfield Public Library
called Meet Your Muslim Neighbor. I don't have any. The program was
lead by a Pakistani out of Chicago. He had a distinct accent so I
don't know how long he had been off the vote. Among the things I
learned was that Abraham was a muslim, that Jews aren't mentioned in
the Bible and that Muslims get hysterical when Jews go to the Temple
Mount because they are going to worship in their mosque.

I read one of Brigette Gabriel's book, a Lebanese Christian, where I
learned the Muslims teach that every major biblical character from
Adam and Eve down were muslims.

The problems that Jews have with Arabs isn't because they are Arabs,
but they are Muslims and what the "Religion of Peace" teaches. It
teaches to hate Jews and mistrusts Christians. Christians are almost
extinct in Muslim country. To learn how muslims I's suggest one read
Raymond Ibrahaim's book Crucified Again.

I suppose one would say I was an Islamophobe. Try reading A God That
hates by Wafa Sultan a Syrian Muslim.

All muslims bad, of course not, but the crazies way out number the
sane.

Did Dave Bartholomew have "bad DNA?" He lived to be 100 and was still

determined by just one factor. Plenty of killer diseases have nothing
to do with diet *or* DNA. Pancreatic cancer to name just one example,

Afraid not. Pancreatic cancer has been traced to eating fatty fats.
That's something people should think about the next time they shove a

How anyone with a partial functioning brain cell would eat a hamburger

How do you explain if DNA is such a great factor that blacks have so
much bad DNA?
-----------
Did Dave Bartholomew have "bad DNA?" He lived to be 100 and was still
getting paid to play the trumpet at age 90. How long you live is not
determined by just one factor. Plenty of killer diseases have nothing
to do with diet *or* DNA. Pancreatic cancer to name just one example,
or aggressive prostate cancer for another.
Afraid not. Pancreatic cancer has been traced to eating fatty fats.
That's something people should think about the next time they shove a
baconator in their mouths.
--------------
That is not true. I'm not saying a "baconator" won't harm you, but I
can't find any reputable source that says eating fatty foods causes
pancreatic cancer. Or even that it's a risk factor.

You don't see blacks in Africa who are obese. They were taught to eat badly by the slave owners when they came here.

Actually, when I was in Africa I did see Africans who were obese, but
they were the upper class. In societies where just having enough to eat
is beyond many, being fat is a symbol of prestige and position. Like
Mr. Domino in New Orleans, to steer us back on topic.

Okay, so how do you explain your President, same age as you, doesn't
smoke or drink but absolutely terrible diet and is obese even if not
"morbidly" so. I repeat, terrible diet, way overweight, no exercise to

Diane, the moment that Trump got a elected, was yet in office, the

Kosher?????????? You gotta be kidding. We were reformed Jews.
My grandfather was and parents of Temple Israel the largest reformed
temple in Detroit.

AS I said I began adjusting my diet, not that it was ever bad, after
my father died in 1982. He had that bad "DNA" as did all the males in
the family. Yes I like all things that are to eat, but I like not
being sick more. Fortunately I like the eating the stuff that is god

Yes I know H.W. lived a long time, but drugs and other things
prolonged his life. BTW it a characteristic of being a Bush that as

You have a point. The blacks really like their fried chicken.
and fish.

THe stipe mall down the street in the last few years has gotten a you
buy, we fry fish market.

The chinese restaurant closed up in the last ten years and the Pickle
Barrel Deli Deli years ago. New York Bagel still remains standing as
the only reminder that Southfield had a substantial Jewish population.

Of the population the only ones that remain are the Orthodox who need
to be close to their shuls, a few and I do mean few, died in the wool
liberals/ socialists type and me.

Being a Jew I guess i can ask the following without being called an
anti-semite. In its 60 years of existence Southfield has changed very
little other than the number of its residents and racial make up, it's
80+% black. So where have the Jews that gone?

We have a great Jewish bakery on the outskirts of London not far from
where I live that sell the most delicious bagels and from whence I buy
whenever I'm in the area.

I'm not Jewish of course (I like my bacon sandwiches too much!) but I
developed a taste for real bagels and some other Jewish delicacies
when I worked for several years among the great and good in a
prominent London street market.

I worked at a place called Dubb's in the early 70s. It was located on
Ten Mile and Greenfield.. On the west side of Greenfield and north to
Thirteen mile was Southfield and the east side of Greenfield from
eight to Eleven Mile was Oak Park. Both had a sizable Jewish
population long since gone. In the back making cooking the corn beef
among other things was Ruby a black women. In my travels as I youth, I
found many Jewish Delis had black woman in the back doing the cooking.
BTW where Dubbs once stood there is a strictly Kosher restaurant.

New York Bagel has been in Detroit and has many store in Detroit.
Detroit itself has always had a sizable Jewish community.

In my youth after Sunday school we's always stop off at the New York
Bagel on Seven Mile and Shacker to get bagels, lox and cream cheese on
the way home. Right next to NYB was a Temple that is now long gone.
Where it stood is now a Black Church. Other than NY Bagel there are
few other places to get a decent bagel, The other places bagels are
nothing more bread donuts.

A dozen years ago or so I was to meet my friend Ari Katz. A financial
manager, he want to get my business and suggested we meet at Einstein
Bagels in West Bloomfield. BTW WB has a sizeable Jewish population. To
that suggestion I replied "Oh, you mean the goy bagel place?" His
response was a big laugh.

THe only decent bagel I've found that wasn't from NYB is Bruegger's.

In the interest of comparing notes what kind of figure would your
"oral surgeon" (I assume you mean what we here would call "dentist")
charge someone for their regular six monthly visit if everything
checked out ok and no other treatment was required?
Here oral surgeons are not dentists. They do tooth implants, wisdom
teeth removal, and other bloody stuff. They charge exorbitant sums.
Dentists do cleanings and fillings and crowns. An ordinary checkup here
in Wisconsin costs about $125, though prices, as they say, may vary,
and x-rays are extra.
Dentist still pull teeth.

In Detroit $100-$150.

If you got to the dental school where you get a much better cleaning
its $40.

My cleanings cost nothing as they are covered by my Medicare Advantage
plan.

Are you suggesting that North America, with Trump Tower and where,
like in Dick Whittington's London, the streets are paved with gold,
might have inequality issues too?
