High Fog preventing the view where I'm at, UC Berkeley campus. it seems
a bit clearer at the western fringe of town, where I could be if I
weren't at work. A few years back, I watched a lunar eclipse from Mt
Tam, which was way cool. However, I'm at work. I'm always at fucking
work lately, one day off so far this month, and about 3 in the last 6
weeks. Miss all sorts of stuff. Wanna know what it's like to follow the
super bowl by updating the yahoo play by play every 30 seconds or so? I
did get home for the last 9 minutes though. On the whole tonight, I'd
rather be on Tam. Enjoy the show, those who can see it.

Heh, we did that too, went out in the street as well because of all the
trees in the way in the back, passing motorists must have wondered what the
hell we were doing staring into the sky, one guy on a bike almost rode up on
the opposite sidewalk avoiding us. Maybe I shouldn't have kept yelling,
"The sky monster is eating the moon, quick, we must sacrifice a virgin!"

We had cloud cover and couldn't see it. My 7yo daughter went to bed
upset. At 10 to 8 the clouds broke just as the first sliver of
reflected sun started shinig at us. Brought my daughter down to see
it, she thought it was one of the coolest things ever.

It was visible here through a thin layer of clouds so it wasn't as
spectacular as some other lunar eclipses I've seen. Still, the same
thing struck me as when watching other total lunar eclipses, namely
how the lunar "disc", that bright, flat circle of light that one
normally sees become three dimensional when the eclipse enters
totality. It's that visual sense that you can now see the moon for
what it really is, a globe hanging in the sky not so very far away.
Saturn and Regulus were faintly visible on either side through the
thin clouds, but not visible enough to tell which was which.

Wow, exactly what I was thinking as I looked, suddenly it's an *orb* instead
of a bright two-dimensional disc, made it seem much closer too somehow. I
also noticed the little twinkly bits on either side but didn't know what to
call them, one can learn so much here.

We had a great view of it last night as well. I took my digital SLR
and tripod out, got some decent pictures. Made me really appreciate
digital photography - I could make adjustments to shutter speed,
aperture, etc. and *instantly* know if they were improvements or not
unlike the old film days when you'd take bunch of pictures and hope
that some of them came out okay when you got them developed a few days
later.

no matter when it happens. Large numbers of Republicans are unhappy
with the choices they had in the primaries to begin with; a McCain

To bring things back to on-topic ... last night's eclipse was very
cool. We had a few thin clouds in SoCal, which lent an eerie aura to
something that was already eerie on its own. We were also watching a
web feed from a telescope in Argentina, and it was cool to compare the
two. I'm amazed at the difference in the two live views, introduced
by just a few thousand miles of parallax separation.

It was single digits outside last night here in Urbana, that
coupled with the fact that it's a half-mile walk to get out
from under the trees enough to even see the moon means I missed
the hundredth or so lunar eclipse of my lifetime. But I tell
you, reading about it here the next day is almost like being
there in person. Really.

As for your whining about thread morphing I hope you realize
it's futile even for potty mouths.

Oh, I definitely realize how futile it is, but that's not going to
stop me from taking a good opportunity to vent (not "whine", I don't
do "whine") about it. Ya see, the goal in venting is to just vent, to
get it outta your system, not to actually change people's behaviour,
which, as you rightly said, is futile.

Anyways, looking at any eclipse will never get old for me. I get
jazzed just watching the post-sunset Space Station and Shuttle
flyovers. It's not the photons that hit the eyes, it's the vastness
of thought spurned by those boring photons that amazes.

It's spectacular here in Boston. Crystal clear. Definitely the best
view of a total lunar that I've seen. The missus and I stood out in
the cold for like 20 minutes waiting for it to complete. The baleful
orange color would be unnerving if one didn't know why it was
happening. It's half way back as I write this. Very nice.

(and unusually) over the house... just to add to the drama.

It was OK here in socal. We had some intermittent cloud cover and the
humidity was real high, so not crystal clear, but a fine showing none
the less.
