OT: how to post picture on this newsgroup(s)

Hi All,

It sometimes frustrates me that I can't post a picture on
text only newsgroups. Here is one workaround:

https://imgbb.com/

You just upload your screen shot and it gives you a URL
which you paste to the newsgroup. Not a nice as in line,
but it works too. And no html overhead! :-)

there are many such services, imgur.com being one of the most popular.

Or if you have your own webspace; I have my own domain, which I got
mainly to get out of being messed around by another company, but it came
with 500M of webspace - costs me twentysomething pounds a year, and I
think there are cheaper ones (especially if _all_ you want is the
webspace). Advantage of having your own webspace is that you can upload
anything (legal) - and people can download from it with any browser, and
without needing to plough through lots of scripts, tracking, and so on
that a lot of the free sites inflict on them. You can usually do just
raw directories - like http://255soft.uk/temp/ (one I use for
screenshots) or http://255soft.uk/Bingo/ (puppy pictures I host for a
friend); or, you can write web pages like http://255soft.uk/marigold/ .
(Many of the hosting companies will let you run server-side scripting,
but that's outside the scope of this.)

Anything you add for security will slow the computer but it shouldn't be
significant or prolonged. Security software is to protect the computer, not
the primary use of the computer.

I have 32MB website space, and it is free of charge.
My provider gives that as a free addition for customers.

My previous ISP offered 5MB free per customer website.

Sorry, fails Mayayana's (and mine) "no script" rule. Here's what I see
(on the right): Loading Image... (and you'll be
able to see that without running _any_ scripts): just a pale blue-green
background with five buttons at the top left. And when I "view source",
I get the window on the left - obviously _lots_ of script.

(On the whole, if the URL _doesn't_ end in .jpg [or .gif or whatever], I
usually expect there to be script involved. Not that if it does
guarantees none, of course.)

RC 1/5 scale P51D.

I designed and built the the .61 glow Engine from 2 inch aluminum bar
stock, using my Metal turning lathe, milling machine and drill press.
It took 2 evenings to design it and about 5 weeks of spare time evenings
to build it.
The crankshaft runs on 2 ball bearings and the con rod runs on sintered
bronze bushings. I designed the carburetor and built it from bar stock also.
The Engine idles at about 1600 rpm and runs flat out at 12,000 rpm
turning a 12 inch by 6 pitch prop.
It was a fun project, one of many over the years done in my basement
workshop.

Why?

Ok, readers need to please select a monospaced font.

You can send ASCII art or gray-scale art.

Hi All,
It sometimes frustrates me that I can't post a picture on
https://imgbb.com/
You just upload your screen shot and it gives you a URL
which you paste to the newsgroup.
Here is a partial list of such services. Pick one you like.
* TinyPic ............... http://tinypic.com/

* FreeImageHosting ...... http://www.freeimagehosting.net/upload.php
* ImageVenue [JPEG only] http://www.imagevenue.com/hostflash.php
Cool list! Thank you!
I recommend staying away from TinyPic.

I can give an example.

I've been using Linux VMs to visit Tinypic when
someone posts a link. I won't go there, unless I'm
insulated with a VM.

I had Mint booted yesterday for this purpose, a Mint
virtual machine. I started Firefox inside Mint and
loaded up the URL. The entire VM crashed. And this
is Linux, not Windows.

I've also had incidents a couple years ago, where
visiting that site (in Windows), was messing up
the Windows OS.

Wear some kinda condom if visiting TinyPic.

And as for when it attacks, it remembers how
many times you've visited (cookies or whatever).
The adverts become "more aggressive" the more
times you visit. And that's when you'll get attacked.
If you've never been there before, you'll probably
be saying "Paul, what are you talking about,
all is quiet here". Sure, the first page view is
OK. But do a half dozen pages and get back to me.
I get the impression they don't vet the adverts
they sell.

Odd. I have never had that happen in either Linux or Windows.

I did stop using Tinypic when some of Tinypic's ads were a bit NSFW,
but that is as far as problems with Tinypic ever went.

Tinypic stays inside the browser and never gets out to crash the OS.

If you had a crash, then I would suspect a buggy browser add-on was
involved. I have very few browser extensions, and the Flash plugin
is set to "ask to activate".

If Tinypic can crash your system then so can other sites, even
otherwise legitimate sites running ads by bad guys.

I clear cookies regularly - I configure Firefox to keep cookies
only until Firefox is closed (which I do often).

Two that I don't recommend for that very reason are the tinypic (which is
just too obnoxious to use and for people to get your pictures), and
https://imgmonkey.com

The list was good though, as it had 4 sites that I hadn't known about.
Please see my updated list (which was typed before Paul mentioned that he
too disliked tinypic.

The rest seem reasonable though.
I appreciate that you added value to our overall tribal knowledge.

then there's something wrong with your vm.

tinypic has a shitload of extra crap than just the image and is best
avoided for various reasons, but it can't cause the underlying vm to
crash. at most, the browser would crash, but even that's a stretch.

My list is of sites that offer no-nonsense downloads.
I don't know about those other sites. I add them as
I find them. ImgBB seems to be OK, based on checking
Rene's link. That was to ibb.com. Same thing? I'm not
sure. But the image was only 47 KB. The other issue
is whether there are size limits. I don't know about that
aspect. For instance, in the photo group people will
often link to their own photos, but there's not much
point seeing those in low-res.

Here are some "imagetitan" links for folks to check out
(Ignore the captions, it's a cut and paste from Android threads.)

1. With Android, on any number of old phones, all you do is install any
free automatic app backup app
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.usage.appbackup>

2. Then you plug any number of old phones from your friends and family
into Windows, where, if you have the USB option enabled on the phone,
Windows will automatically "mount" the phone's file system so that you
can slide the hundreds of APKs onto Windows for archival purposes.
<Loading Image...>

3. When you're ready to install the hundreds of free apps on a new Android
phone, just plug in your new Android phone and slide the hundreds of
Android free app APKs over to that new Android phones' file system.

4. On the new Android phone, use the default file explorer (or any file
explorer that can work with APK compressed files) to install any of
the hundreds of free apps onto that new phone.
<Loading Image...>

5. For this example, we chose the F-Droid open source New Pipe application,
which is sort of a free youtube-red clone that allows the user to
search, view, play, strip, rip, download, etc., youtube videos at will.
<Loading Image...>

6. The first time you install from an APK copied over from Windows,
you will need to allow installation from "unknown sources" on the
new Android phone.
<Loading Image...>

7. Since these APKs were culled from your own devices, they present
a very low risk to the user, and they help you gain privacy since
you have no need to be involved with anything on Google Play:
<Loading Image...>

8. Here you see "Unknown sources" are enabled on the new phone.
<Loading Image...>

9. This New Pipe application does not need any special permissions.
<Loading Image...>

10. Either accept or decline the "Google Play Protect" scheme.
<Loading Image...>

11. Then the install of the app will occur on the new Android phone.
<Loading Image...>

12. Resulting in an "App installed" success message on the new phone.
<Loading Image...>

13. In this case, those quick steps provide you with the capability
of replacing the youtube app with a much more powerful alternative
which will not only strip out the audio or video from a youtube
video, but it can search and play any youtube video where you'll
likely never need or use the original youtube app ever again.

Don't worry about it.
TB has two kinds of search. And a lot of the technical articles
pay little attention to how the USENET reader subsystem works.
You can assume any description given, applies to email accounts.
Less so with USENET.

The cubeupload side didn't use to require an account, but, as I noted, that
all changed on Memorial Day in 2018. Now you need an account, which negates
a lot of the benefits.

Otherwise, it's not a bad site from my perspective, where it didn't work
with Tor (which is what I use to post my pictures), and it converted some
common formats, such as BMP to PNG, which was unusual since most sites
don't seem to accept PNG files.

Mayayana may have a better perspective on how obnoxious it is for the user
though, as I look mostly from the upload side.

Thank you for adding value to our tribal knowledge!
Yours is a good list where each site has pros & cons as to be expected.
Most will convert a PNG or BMP (& sometimes GIF) to a JPG on the fly.

Here's a summary which includes a quick assessment of half of your list.
(The other half of your list I haven't tested yet.)

* TinyPic ............... http://tinypic.com/
PRO: Free, no registration, works with Tor
CON: No delete, rather obnoxious to initially upload & use by recipient

* Imgur ................. https://imgur.com/
PRO: Free, no registration, can upload multiple files at once
CON: Won't work with Tor, delete is just a request

* ImageTitan ............ http://www.imagetitan.com/
PRO: Free, no registration, works with Tor, easy upload & download, 5 files
PRO: Delete link
CON: Captcha (but it's easy), URL sucks

* PostImage ............. https://postimages.org/
PRO: Free, no registration, delete link, easy to upload & download
CON: Doesn't work with Tor

* FreeImageHosting ...... http://www.freeimagehosting.net/upload.php
PRO: Free, no registration,
CON: Aioe nntp server has them banned (AFAIK), only 1 picture at a time

The rest in your list I'm not familiar with so I haven't tested them yet.
* ImageBam .............. http://www.imagebam.com/
* ImgBB ................. https://imgbb.com/
* PostImage ............. https://postimages.org/
* ImageVenue [JPEG only] http://www.imagevenue.com/hostflash.php

I'm not sure how good these are below, as I haven't tested them yet.
* Bild.ME .............. http://bild.me
* PostImage ............ http://postimage.io
* FileConvoy ........... http://fileconvoy.com
* ImageMonkey .......... https://imgmonkey.com
* Vimeo .................https://vimeo.com/upload (video)
* WeTakePic ............ http://wetakepic.com (seems to be dead)
* TurboImageHost ....... https://www.turboimagehost.com

These seem to suck but I list them to be complete.
* http://cubeupload.com (started requiring a login after 5/31/2018)
* http://share.pho.to (requires a login now.)
* http://www.photobucket.com (requires login)
* https://www.flickr.com (requires login)
* http://imgsrc.ru (requires signup)
* http://imageshack.us (requires signup)
* https://www.supload.com (failed in all ways useful)
* http://imgsafe.org (failed with various IP addresses)
* http://www.use.com (useless as you can't get a URL to the full size)

For text files, these apparently exist (but I haven't tested them).
* https://pastebin.com
* https://paste.ee/

For binaries, these apparently exist (but I haven't tested them yet).

Actually ? Its rather easy. Simply by some URL-string pattern
recognising. And as most of those start with HTTP(S) or FTP thats a rather
dead giveaway.

@Arlen:

If you cannot post a an image in it to a certain newsgroup than it has most
likley *on purpose* been set up to reject them. Which is often the case
for non-warez and "no girls from the jpeg clan" (read: conversation only)
newsgroups.

ok, it's 'possible' but it's not done, particularly just for *one*
image hosting site and not all of them.

it's extra work for no benefit and the moment users realize their posts
are being censored and/or blocked, they'll ditch that newsserver for
one that doesn't do that shit.

tl;dr - nonissue.

Who was talking about "just a single hosting site" please ?

Also, how would you possibly *know* ? :-)

I could tell you that the moon is made of green cheese, with exactly as much
to back that up as you have for yours ...

And thats apart from the possibility that a judge *orders* it to happen.
Like currently DMCA demands make google searches and website content

Some newsgroups are rather clearly text-only ones (like the current one).
And when those get protected by means to stop bulk-dumping than that is fine
by me.

Also, the bigger the messages become, the shorter the retainment time gets
to be. The newsgroup server I'm currently using has a 6 month one for this
newsgroup. I've used news servers with newsgroups where it was less than a
week.
Post by nospam
tl;dr - nonissue.
Think again: Apart from the above retainment time issue, I've seen
newsgroups die because some person(s) targetted it with their warez and/or
picture dumps (probably because they got "thrown out" of their previous
newsgroup and they needed to find another).

it's not possible for a news server to ban an image hosting
site or any other site in a post
Actually ? Its rather easy. Simply by some URL-string pattern
recognising. And as most of those start with HTTP(S) or FTP thats a rather
dead giveaway.
ok, it's 'possible' but it's not done, particularly just for *one*
image hosting site and not all of them.
it's extra work for no benefit and the moment users realize their posts
are being censored and/or blocked, they'll ditch that newsserver for
one that doesn't do that shit.
tl;dr - nonissue.

To spell it out for you: if a usenet server maintainer wishess to quell the

public fileservers (also kills most of the the indirect posting of IP

there are free servers that don't play those silly games.
As I already said, you are not likely in a position to claim that with any
kind of certainty.

it's also trivial to circumvent, which is why it's a waste of

But thats the beauty of all those other "free" servers: You need to log in
to them, and if you misbehave (read: are violating the TOS - you always do
read the TOS, don't you ?) they will simply kill that login.

In other words: They do not need a lot of filtering on the contents of
posts, because they can simply "filter" the offender. :-D

what's silly is blocking one image hosting site. it accomplishes
nothing.

there are dozens of other image hosting sites and many newsservers,
plus any url can be obfuscated, thereby avoiding being caught in a
filter in the first place.

it's a bit like piracy. those who want to pirate content know where to
find it and how to bypass any drm.

except that the vast, vast majority of newsservers do not do that,
including free ones.

usenet posts are full of assorted links, some of which are links to
malware sites or crapware, some which are hidden behind url shorteners
to hide their true identity so that people are tricked into clicking
them, and which would easily bypass a filter.

usenet posts are also full of illicit content, including pirated music,
movies, software and porn. no links needed.

web forums, on the other hand, which are moderated often do block or
filter links as well as 'bad words', however, usenet (other than a few
groups) is not moderated. for better or worse, anything goes.

big deal.

it takes under a minute to create a new account, and the beauty of that
is that the second time, you'll know which urls to obfuscate to avoid
being caught again, but if that happens, create another account.

Not likely. If a program needs to be able to use it a filter can capture
it. And if it needs too much user intervention to re-create the origional
it becomes problematic for a run-of-the-mill user.

And again, from your position as a user of usenet you are in no position to
know what does, and what doesn't get caught by such a filter. Maybe its
set up just to be a detector, but not connected to a blocker, dumping all
its catches in a logfile ...

True. But thats not the problem. What is is that those "free" usenet
servers require you to fill in credentials is for a reason: something to
track, like the provided email address (which got send an mesage you had to
acknowledge).

Known-to-be-bad email providers can be blocked even easier than URLs. And
in the case you have been using a VPN* to connect to them (and maybe the
usenet server too) they too can set up filters to block known VPNs (which
some companies already do - ready up on geofencing).

*are you sure you _always_ used a VPN to connect ? Not even once you
slipped up and connected without it ? Some real big cyber baddies have
been caught that way you know ...

Goodby kiddo. Have a nice life. And when (not if) your "nobody can touch

warn you.

no position is needed. it's common sense.

nothing is 100% secure. someone will find a way around it, and usually
does fairly quickly.

in the above example, where a provider blocks one particular site, all
that's needed is to use a url shortener. done.

What does this code do ?

What file is this from ?

if (not $hdr{References}
and $hdr{'X-Trace'} =~ /posting\.google\.com/ and not $gr{reports}) {
if ($hdr{Subject} =~ /
cheap.*wholesale
| wholesale.*cheap
| ^\(CN-CIRCLE
| china.*(?:shoes|sandals|sneakers|clothes|bags|jeans|caps|
watch)
| shoes.*(?:gucci|parda|chanel|puma|hogan|bape|armani|ugg|ice|
versace)
/imx) {
saveart('subject');
return reject('Subject Rejected');
};
};

That's an example of a server filter.

AIOE is a special kind of server. It's a Free news
server that doesn't use User Accounts. There aren't
very many of those. It requires a *lot* of filtering
to do that.

More hints here, about how specific some of the filters
can be. This is the "dynamic" part. There's also a
rule set which is invariant and represents arbitrary
server policy (i.e. the "line length" filter rule
that limits the number of characters per line).

https://news.aioe.org/documentation/access-restrictions/

Anyone who has used that server for a while, can
tell you what the rules are.

What does this code do ?
Hi Paul,

Thanks for looking up that AIOE filtering where that's not even the tiniest
amount of filtering that Paolo Amaroso (estasi at aioe dot org) does, where
he constantly changes things (and doesn't document it), which is completely
his prerogative and which I don't complain about one bit (as it's almost
impossible to do what he does and for so long).

In fact, I've been using Paolo's aioe for decades, it seems, as I have been
using Ray Banana's (rayban at raybanana dot net) ET for just as long where
Ray's filtering (aka Wolfgang M. Weyand wolfgang(at)eternal-september.org)
is different than Paolo's.

Different still is the server I'm using at this very moment, which is Steve
Crook's server (steve at mixmin dot net), and different from that are the
many others such as the dizum server from Alex de Joode
(***@despair.sabotage.org) or Daniel & Monika Weber & Benjamin Gufler's
(usenet at news.solani dot org) Solani server, or Jesse Rehmer's (jesse dot
rehmer at gmail dot com) Blueworld, or Steen Jensen's Sunsite, etc.

While any explanation is completely lost on nospam, who simply wants to
troll, I'd like to explain to you that I posted out of my ad hoc log file,
where whenever I run into an anomaly in posting pictures (usually
explanatory screenshots) or in nntp filtering (bearing in mind I'm always
on VPN where filters are sometimes stronger for VPN users given that the
nodes are known), I write it down on my log file, and then move on.

So if I wrote that Tor doesn't work, then it didn't work. It could be just
that Tor exit node or it could be all Tor exit nodes (they're public
knowledge), and if aioe filtered based on content then that's what they
did, where they can change their filtering (and they often do) all the
time.

I've had many personal conversations with almost all the admins of the free
public nntp servers, where they're all great people, Steve Crook being one
of the most responsive by far, having implemented a tone of my suggestions
over the years.

Anyway, I'm not even going to respond to nospam's trolls, but I did want
YOU (and the other respectable people here) to know that I posted my
assessment of the picture-posting sites based on a cut and paste from my
ad-hoc log, which was accurate at the time I wrote it.

Since I care about my credibility, I figured I'd explain those details.

Along the lines of a free upload site that Mayayana and others can teset on
Windows, here's another site (fileconvoy.com) which seems to allow
arbitrary file uploads in my tests from mobile devices today.

Please note that this is a cut and paste from an iOS/Android thread that is
about uploading audio files to arbitrary web sites, where the point for
this newsgroup is that it works just as well from Windows.

------------------ see below ---------------
garageband is free. it's a very fun app, and one that does not exist on
android.
I've been writing a tutorial for replacing a clutch so I apologize to the
OP for not having responded with the tested suggested facts sooner.
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/alt.home.repair/qEhph1MmSKs>

In one of the rare instances where nospam may have actually guessed
correctly, it is likely true that GarageBand is a "fun app" which (at least
explicitly) "doesn't exist on Android" (at least in trademarked form).

As always, nospam misses the actual point, in that the app *functionality*
is what matters (not the trademarked "brand name"), where we have proven
long ago that there is nothing by way of app functionality on iOS, all by
its itty bitty self, that isn't already on Android (usually in spades)...
while there is *plenty* on Android that isn't on iOS (e.g., launchers, wifi
signal strength apps, cellular tower apps, call recording apps, screen
organizational tools, torrenting apps, youtube clones, etc.).

Since the app "functionality" the user wants always already exists on
Android, it took only a quick search to find possible alternatives to
GarageBand (where I admit I don't use GarageBand so I can't say how good or
bad they are by way of comparison).
* Stagelight

* BandLab
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bandlab.bandlab>

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nilsschneider.heat.full>
* Caustic

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.singlecellsoftware.caustic>
etc.

While there is nothing on iOS by way of app functionality that isn't on
Android, what matters for this thread is whether saving the file to
GarageBand works for the OP.

It should work. So let's test this suggestion out, shall we...

To help the OP, and since my credibility is stellar, I just tried this on
the iOS 11.x iPad for the OP (who seems to know less about iOS than even I
do, which means he needs even more purposefully helpful advice from us so I
will give him the step-by-step gory details so he won't miss a beat).

To the OP, here is what I did which you should follow based on how your iOS
device is organized.

1. Start at the iOS "Audio" folder to create your test voice record:
<Loading Image...>

2. On this iPad, we choose the freeware "Vox Voice Recorder" app:
<Loading Image...>

3. We press the "Record" button and record an arbitrary test audio:
<Loading Image...>

4. In this case, I wish to create an easy to remember test-file name:
<Loading Image...>

5. Where I rename the file to "snafu" so that we can easily find it:
<Loading Image...>

6. Here we see the Vox Voice Recorder created an "m4a" snafu file:
<Loading Image...>

7. We select that test file in Vox VR and then hit the Share button:
<Loading Image...>

8. That pops up a bunch of selections, where we hit "Save to Files":
<Loading Image...>

9. We then select to save to the GarageBand document space on iOS:
<Loading Image...>

10. Now we go to our "Browse" homescreen folder to bring up Safari:
<Loading Image...>

11. In Safari, we go to an arbitrary file-upload site (any one will do):
<Loading Image...>

12. We follow that site's instructions to "Choose File" to upload:
<Loading Image...>

13. It will bring up a "Browse" dialog to browse for the file on iOS:
<Loading Image...>

14. The file is listed in the available "Recents" files directory listings:
<Loading Image...>

15. We could choose another file, but this shows the file ready to go:
<Loading Image...>

16. We follow the rest of the web site's instructions for upload:
<Loading Image...>

17. Voila! The file iwas easily directly uploaded from the iOS device!
<Loading Image...>

The audio file is uploaded from GarageBand from Safari!
* The functionality, in this case, is similar to that of Android.*

BTW, on Android, there are many ways to do this, so here is just one.

1. Start at the "Browse" folder on your home screen:
<Loading Image...>

2. Choose any web browser, where, in this case, I chose Chrome:
<Loading Image...>

3. Go to any web site using that browser, e.g., http://fileconvoy.com
<Loading Image...>

4. When you hit the "Upload" button, a choice is your "Voice Recorder"
<Loading Image...>

5. You can record, but I chose to look at previously saved files:
<Loading Image...>

6. I selected the file "test.3gp" that I had created earlier today:
<Loading Image...>

7. And then hit the Voice Recorder "attach" icon:
<Loading Image...>

8. Check the agreement & hit the "Upload" button on the web site form:
<Loading Image...>

9 This immediately uploaded the file attached directly from Voice Recorder:
<Loading Image...>

10. Showing a confirmation screen when it was done:
<Loading Image...>

Voila!

This proves, for this case, that the requested use-model functionality is
essentially the same for this use model on both the iOS and Android devices
(as well it should be for an app functionality so commonly needed and so
very simple to do).
