Discussion:
best cover song?

I took my four year old daughter to see "Cars" recently, and was appalled
and annoyed to hear a cover of Tom Cochrane's "Life Is A Highway" in the
soundtrack. The original is a great song, yet Disney/Pixar inexplicably
chose to use some relatively unknown band instead. Of course, the new
version adds nothing interesting to the song, so why'd they bother? I find
out later from my daughter that they have been promoting this group ("The
Rascal Flats") relentlessly on the Disney Channel along with their other
faux-idol teen favorites. *sigh* I guess it's always about the money.

So that got me thinking about what some really *great* cover songs were.
Here are some off the top of my head:

"Blue Monday" - Orgy. Turns an 80's electro-pop song by New Order into a
wild raging song with a hammering wall of guitars. Awesome. I play this
very loud on my iPod.

"(Oh) Pretty Woman" - Van Halen. Very fun version with a catchy riff, adds
a lot of swagger & attitude to the Roy Orbison original

"Locomotion" - Grand Funk Railroad. Mark Farner's solo in the middle is
great!

"Blinded By The Light" - Manfred Mann. Completely different than
Springsteen's original, yet both work for me.

Any others?

I've always liked the Infectious Grooves version of "The Immigrant Song"
better than the original. I think it's just for the excellent bass
player they had, who took the song and made it kind of ... not "funk",
but for lack of a proper word, funky.

Ok, I spent some time looking at www.allmusic.com (awesome site for this
kind of research, BTW, and a great place to get cover art for your iTunes
library). I find out they are a country band. That explains two things:

1. why I've never heard of them (I listen to all kinds of music except for
two: country, and western.)

2. why their version sucks. You just don't have a country act cover a rock
song. You just don't. That's how you end up with stuff like this, or Garth
Brooks version of Kiss' "Hard Luck Woman".

ruled. It was incredible. Last Train Home is a country group.

Any others?
The Editors have a great cover of REM's "Orange Crush" out right now.

The Pixies cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On".

And for an oldie, Otis Redding's cover of "Satisfaction" has got to
make the list. As does Devo's cover of the same song.

I have never heard Springsteen sing that song. Always knew he wrote it.

I thot John Mellencamp did alright with "Wild nights"
I liked the Stones singing "on the cover of the rolling stone"
Dixie chyx did far better than Stevie Nicks with "Landslide"
I liked the Counting crows version of "big yellow taxi"
Thorogood with "one bourbon, one scotch and one beer"
and
William Shatner did a great job with "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"

was appalled and annoyed to hear a cover of Tom Cochrane's
"Life Is A Highway" in the soundtrack. The original is a
great song, yet Disney/Pixar inexplicably chose to use some
relatively unknown band instead. Of course, the new version
adds nothing interesting to the song, so why'd they bother?
I
find

out later from my daughter that they have been promoting
this group ("The Rascal Flats") relentlessly on the Disney
Channel along with their other faux-idol teen favorites.
*sigh* I guess it's always about the money.
So that got me thinking about what some really *great* cover
"Blue Monday" - Orgy. Turns an 80's electro-pop song by New
Order into a wild raging song with a hammering wall of
guitars. Awesome. I play this very loud on my iPod.
"(Oh) Pretty Woman" - Van Halen. Very fun version with a
catchy riff,
adds

a lot of swagger & attitude to the Roy Orbison original
"Locomotion" - Grand Funk Railroad. Mark Farner's solo in
the middle is great!
"Blinded By The Light" - Manfred Mann. Completely different
than Springsteen's original, yet both work for me.
Any others?
I have never heard Springsteen sing that song. Always knew he wrote it.
I thot John Mellencamp did alright with "Wild nights"
I liked the Stones singing "on the cover of the rolling
stone" Dixie chyx did far better than Stevie Nicks with
"Landslide"
That is some seriously stinky bate.
I'm serious. Nicks is so freakin nasal in that song I cant
stand it. Have you ever heard the chyx sing it, or are you just
reflexing their politics?
If Sex were a corporal person, her voice would sound just like
Stevie.

Early Springsteen. Much different than Manfred Mann's version.
Manfred covered three or four Springsteen songs. Other than
"Blinded," I think Manfred's versions are clearly better. Well,
Springsteen's version of "For You" is pretty good, too. Chris
Thompson's voice (Earth Band's lead singer) is awesome, though.

Jimi Hendryx, "Hey Joe" (The Leaves)
Except The Leaves version was itself a cover - Billy Roberts registered the
copyright on the song in 1962. First released recording was The LEaves
version in 1965, closely followed by the Surfaris in 1966. Apparently there
are tapes of Roberts performing it as early as 1961, but they have never
been released.

"To Love Somebody" Janis Joplin (covering the Bee Gees)
"Oh, Atlanta" Bad Company (Little Feat)
No one will ever be able to do "Oh, Atlanta" as well as Little Feat.
HERESY!

I know....I corrected myself in a later post. Bad Co.'s "Oh Atlanta" is an
original written by Mick Ralphs.
I thought about another cover I like, but it would also be HERESY. I love
Elvis singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

The dead yank. His version on "That's the Way it Is" blows me away.

Oops. Little Feat's song wasn't the same as Bad Co. Told you I just woke
up......

But Allison Krause's version of the Bad Co. song is pretty good, too. ;-)

"Blue Monday" - Orgy. Turns an 80's electro-pop song by New Order into a
wild raging song with a hammering wall of guitars. Awesome. I play this
very loud on my iPod.
"(Oh) Pretty Woman" - Van Halen. Very fun version with a catchy riff,
adds a lot of swagger & attitude to the Roy Orbison original
"Locomotion" - Grand Funk Railroad. Mark Farner's solo in the middle is
great!
"Blinded By The Light" - Manfred Mann. Completely different than
Springsteen's original, yet both work for me.
Any others?
I have a Beach Boys version of the Beatle's Norwegian Wood. It's not bad.
Austin Lounge Lizards version of Pink Floyd's "Lunatic?" (C&W slant)
Pinball Wizard by Elton John, original by The Who.
Lucy In The Sky by Elton John, original by The Beatles

I like whoever sings the new version of The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes?"

Around 1980, I was driving with a friend when the original version of
"Hooked On a Feeling" came on. I asked him what he thought of that song,
and he said it was okay, but he hated re-makes. At the time, the
"ooga-chuckah" version was current. Always hated that one.

I think Crow was covering Rod Stewart's slowed down version of Cat
Stevens' original. The original song is actually pretty high paced
compared to the others.

A very plausible speculation. I would imagine that Tom Cochrane would
rather not be pimped by the Disney Channel by playing his video daily during
the afternoon teen-oriented sitcoms.

sure....

Johnny Cash's cover of "rusty Cage" from Soundgarten

there's a tribute Album for Depeche mode, where a duet turned "Master
and Servant" into a smoth ditty, almost loungy kinda feel that really
works.

If'n you forgot that Aretha didn't release or write "respect" there's
a reason.... maybe the best cover ditty ever performed.

I like Pat Benatar's version or "i need a lover" better than Johnny
cougar's

These are all good songs done better than their original versions.

Judy Collins - "In My Life" (Lennon's eccentric vocal delivery obscures
the meaning of the lyrics. Collins delivery helps the ambiguous lyrics
make sense.)

Aretha Franklin - "Respect" (Redding sagged when he heard how she
re-made the song.)

Jeff Buckley - "Hallelujah"

The Bobby Fuller Four - "I Fought the Law"

The Young Rascals - "Good Lovin'"

Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris - "Love Hurts"

Dwight Yoakum - "Little Sister" (Yoakum and Pete Anderson hitched up
their britches on this one since Anderson had to one up the original licks.)

The Platters - "Red Sails in the Sunset"

Elvis Presley - "Mystery Train" (note: EP often made terrible covers.
His "Blue Suede Shoes" isn't as good as Carl Perkins original. And his
"Tutti Frutti" is laughable.)

The Who - "Don't Do It" (The Who's version is something of a rarity, but
it's better than both Marvin Gaye's original and The Band's great cover.)

The Kingsmen - "Louie, Louie" (Roughly the 150th cover of the original.
A lame song. A guitar band. Obligatory reference.)

Ray Charles - "You Don't Know Me" (Charles's version is NOT the
original. Eddy Arnold had the first one and a co-writer tag.)

Ray Charles - "Georgia on My Mind" (THE definitive version of a great
American song.)

Marvin Gaye - "Heard it Through the Grapevine" (originally by Gladys Knight)

Eva Cassidy - "Over the Rainbow"

Nine Simone - "Baltimore" (Another rarity here. Simone is a jazz singer,
and "Baltimore" is a 2nd tier Randy Newman song. Simone's version brings
the song real pathos.)

Elvis's version is, as always, strenuous. Perkins's version is as

much stronger than Springsteen's and so much more expressive that he
should do a cover album of Springsteen's songs and let Springsteen retire.

The 8+ minute instrumental groove is what makes it superior to all
other versions IMO.

To each his own. To me, CCR's version sounds like they're a cover band
from a Holiday Inn lounge.

I missed out on the original post, so as usual, I'll just throw my 2 cents
worth in here.

Alice Cooper-Schools Out is hard to beat.
Crosby, Stash, Stills, and Young- Our House is good too.

The new CD out "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man" has a couple of fabulous
covers of Leonard Cohen songs. "Chelsea Hotel #2" and "Everybody Knows"
by Rufus Wainwright are very good. Right up there within hailing
distance of Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah". (Which is, of course, one of
the best records made in the last 50 years or so.)

No, he's right. The CCR version was brilliant.

"Blue Monday" - Orgy. Turns an 80's electro-pop song by New Order into a
wild raging song with a hammering wall of guitars. Awesome. I play this
very loud on my iPod.
Bleah.
Post by Leopold Stotch
"(Oh) Pretty Woman" - Van Halen. Very fun version with a catchy riff,
adds a lot of swagger & attitude to the Roy Orbison original
This one is pretty good.
Post by Leopold Stotch
"Locomotion" - Grand Funk Railroad. Mark Farner's solo in the middle is
great!
Ick.
Post by Leopold Stotch
"Blinded By The Light" - Manfred Mann. Completely different than
Springsteen's original, yet both work for me.
They took the song and made it their own.

Any others?
I just made a CD of covers to send out to people. Some really strange and
obscure stuff that I won't list here because it'll lead to too much
headscratching.

safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless
made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

True.

Terri Clark (a Canadian country singer)'s version wasn't bad, though.

In any case, what's wrong with any of those tunes?

Preferring Chubby Checker to Hank Ballard.
Preferring Bobby Darin to Armstrong, Lemper, Lenya, or hundreds of
others. Lyle Lovett's recent version is fantastic.
Preferring The Marcels to Elvis.
Preferring anyone other than Laura Nyro's version of her own material.

A special entry here for Lizz Wright.

"Stop" (first widely heard by Madonna)
"A Taste of Honey" (a 60s minor hit first extensively exposed by The
Beatles)
"Old Man" (steals it from Neil Young)

That Lizz Wright music hasn't saturated the air waves is one of life's
mysteries. What a voice. The above songs are NOT the best things from
her "Dreaming Wide Awake" CD.

Speaking of The Beatles, my favorite cover from them is on their BBC
Broadcast compilation. George knocks off a very credible "Nothin'
Shakin' (But the Leaves on the Trees)". (Eddie Fontaine)

to me a great cover makes the song unique in it's cover form, like:

even though overplayed: Jimi Hendryx, all along the watchtower (Dylan)

or

Allman Brothers: there is a mountain (Donovan)

I also like:

Ramones: the time has come (Chambers bros)

Iggy pop: Louie Louie

Tom Jones : burning down the house (talking heads)

Rage against the machine does a good version of the MC5's "kick out the
jams"

Frank zappa does a good live version of "whippin post" which I think
was already a cover when the allman bros did it.

I love Zappa's "stairway to heaven" (horn section note for note doing
the guitar solo)

There are also a lot of good tunes here:
