I took my four year old daughter to see "Cars" recently, and was appalled
and annoyed to hear a cover of Tom Cochrane's "Life Is A Highway" in the
soundtrack. The original is a great song, yet Disney/Pixar inexplicably
chose to use some relatively unknown band instead. Of course, the new
version adds nothing interesting to the song, so why'd they bother? I find
out later from my daughter that they have been promoting this group ("The
Rascal Flats") relentlessly on the Disney Channel along with their other
faux-idol teen favorites. *sigh* I guess it's always about the money.
So that got me thinking about what some really *great* cover songs were.
Here are some off the top of my head:
"Blue Monday" - Orgy. Turns an 80's electro-pop song by New Order into a
wild raging song with a hammering wall of guitars. Awesome. I play this
very loud on my iPod.
"(Oh) Pretty Woman" - Van Halen. Very fun version with a catchy riff, adds
a lot of swagger & attitude to the Roy Orbison original
"Locomotion" - Grand Funk Railroad. Mark Farner's solo in the middle is
great!
"Blinded By The Light" - Manfred Mann. Completely different than
Springsteen's original, yet both work for me.
Any others?
