Funny, looked to me like the "errors" came because Osaka was yanking Serena's ungainly body all over the court. Too bad there was no sexist umpire to blame this time.

I think the telling game was the 2nd last game of this match when Osaka just hit 4 straight winners passed her stretching racquet. I actually wanted her to win this tournament but she was beaten by a player who moved better and practically destroy her by playing the same type of game.

yes AND what is also impressive is that was after Serena tried some shouting and Osaka got put off and had lost her previous break, very good tennis.

It was lame she didn't give Osaka much credit for playing great. She
thinks it's all because of her errors, but the truth is Osaka just hit
amazing winners at will. Can't do much about that, just credit your
opponent for playing great.

Serena said she almost led 5-0 in the 1st set lol. Great effort for a

The extended highlights are available. From what I see Osaka opened a can of whoop ass. She made Serena look old.

She beat Halep that defeated her in Wimbledon.
Big deal. She's beaten lots of the players that knocked her out of slams elsewhere. Problem is, now there are lots of them who can beat her when they're zoning, and that's a problem when she has to navigate through two weeks and seven matches. Plus, the field is deeper now and full of hungry young powerhouses. These days--and at nearly 40--Serena can't count on having a string of Sharapova patsies to roll over for her anymore.

understand your argument correctly, right?
No, it seems you don't understand correctly. Anyone on tour has a chance to win a slam. Hey, I even have a chance to win the Powerball. :)

But I do believe the likelihood of her getting that last elusive slam is decreasing steadily over time. No coincidence that she's been falling short of it for years now. The stars would have to align perfectly, somewhat similar to Roger's situation.

It also seems that the more desperate Serena gets, the more she becomes determined to hit *through* opponents who trouble her. This obviously doesn't work against someone like Osaka, which makes it a boneheaded approach for a player of Serena's lengthy experience.

I don't understand what? lol

My question is very specific, instead of writing a paragraph, give
me a number or some percentage that you believe it represents her
chances to win one more slam in the next four slams.

Then we can take it from there.

Your question was "specifically" different from what you asking now. You asked if it was true that I thought she had NO chance, which of course I never said. I answered that obviously she has "a chance" and then expanded upon that. But since you are now asking for a percentage estimate, I'll answer that as well.

Considering her results over the past three years and her current form, I'd guess she has a 17.5% chance to win a slam over the next year. :)

IMO if it does happen, most likely at the USO.

I won't get in arguments and just get to your answer which is 17%.
17% is a high percentage and in my opinion is in contradiction to
all the doubts people are bringing here.
I think people hate her so much to the extent that they are scared
she is going to win every time and when she loses they take a
deep breath and start to repeat all that talk about her
impossible chances to win again.
I don't like Serena but I don't hate her, definitely I believe she
has major personality issues but I respect her efforts and
determination, no one can take this from her.
I expected Halep to beat her but credit again to Serena.
I find it amazing that she is able to stay a major force at age 39
and after having a child.
In my opinion she needs to focus more on mobility and quick movement.
She needs to run long distances, sprints, etc if she wants to win
a slam.
She has 4-5 months to do this before Wimbledon.

It is a high percentage for many players, absolutely. For a 20+ slam champion, not very good. Five years ago I'd have put her chances more like 80% to get at least one slam in four tries. That's a big descent.

I would find it much easier to respect those qualities--along with her mental strength as a champion-- if she gave her opponents some credit for their own efforts and acknowledged that their skills/talents had *something* to do with her losing to them. I understand that this may be a mechanism that drives her own self-belief and keeps doubt at arm's length. Much better to keep those thoughts internal IMO. Then again, many still adore her despite these remarks, so I just shake my head at that.

I agree with you. She still has as much power as ever and can move surprisingly well for the build she has. But she clearly can't move laterally or quickly change direction the way she once could. Players who can hit hard and take the ball early (like Osaka) exploit this. The only way to recover some of that is to do exactly what you suggested. Even at (nearly) 40, one would think it would have to help at least some. I'm surprised she hasn't done this before.

I think she is heavy and bulky, and she can't run long distances
for long times to avoid any damaging impact on her knees which
she had issues with before.

But this is exactly what she needs to do, run long distances for
long times, she needs a good trainer that can put her on a
gradual training program.

Roger said few times he can run on treadmill for hours, no issues.

thing is Osaka is younger and can do all of that stuff and thinks better than her on the court. The way Osaka wrong-footed Serena so many times showed that, she's not put off by her or anything just puts the ball where Serena isn't or tricks her into changing direction. Halep did this at Wimbledon on almost every point and should be able to do it every match really but think she's gotten out of shape/bit-lazy, Mugu should be able too.

The problem is even the older ones did that to her as well. Kerber beat her at Wimbledon in 2018 3,3 and then 2019 Halep trounced her 2,2 . Last year at AO she lost to Pliskova after she got to a commanding lead I think it was and 5:1 in the third set. It is no longer just hot and young that will beat her, anyone her form can be like a yoyo.

Agree and disagree! :D Serena's movement and speed seemed pretty good, better than last year, she's lost weight and some of the gets she got against Osaka were darn good! she did often lose the point but fact she got there matters. I literally took one look at Halep and thought Serena would win cos compared to Wimbledon last year a) Serena looked in better condition and b) Halep looked like she'd been watched Netflix for past 3 months. People dislike Serena for lots of reasons, she been around forever don't forget, so there going to be lots of reasons and she does often try to cheat with shouting gamesmanship when losing + wanting to kill a lines-woman-judge + telling an umpire they are sexist when they definitely aren't and the MSM/all-commentators disgustingly backing her etc don't help either!
Agree with Gracchus and he been saying it for long time, there now quite a few players who can beat Serena now if they play well.

Anyone on tour has a chance to win a slam. Hey, I even have a chance to win the Powerball. :)But I do believe the likelihood of her getting that last elusive slam is decreasing steadily over time. No coincidence that she's been falling short of it for
years
now.

IMO if it does happen, most likely at the USO.
i notice serena is substantially lighter than any time since her baby.
so my guess is she's giving it the old college try this yr, and she
probably has a better chance than the last 3yrs to eke 1 out.

i'm going to say 33% chance to win Wim or USO. 5% at FO.

There are 5 or so women, who while playing their best tennis, can beat Serena... yes, the stars will have to be in millennial alignment for her to win 2 more majors...

These days--and at nearly 40--Serena can't count on having a string of Sharapova patsies to roll over for her anymore.
serena could win another slam - but it would require an osaka upset by
another player IMO. something that osaka was quite prone to last
couple yrs. that's probably why serena is hanging around another yr.

Yeah, but absence of Osaka doesn't mean she won't lose to a Halep or a Andreescu or a Kerber...or a Panneta. :)

All it takes is for one of them to play a peak match and/or Serena's level to sag. The older you get, the harder it is to play your best day after day. On top of that, there's the "aura" factor. These girls are like hyenas nipping at a crippled hippo.

i think osaka is the 1 girl who can/will beat serena nearly at will

favor it in a given match. where serena is faltering past 4 yrs IMO is

They always say players' strengths often turn into their biggest weaknesses late in their careers. That's definitely been the case with Serena (mental strength/bringing her best at the biggest moments to mental weakness).

Sharapova won 2 FO from 3 finals in a row. Sloane Stephens made FO final.
So what? Sharapova was supremely fit when she won 2 FOs. And her backhand, forehand and movement has improved since the early days... he serve had become worse, but that didnt matter much at FO... Sloane winning the FO was a disgrace... but that's what happens when you don't have decent clay courters. I hope Iga is the next Henin at FO. But she is young... so we don't know which direction she will go. Look at Bianca. She seems to have regressed.

Serena's not going to beat many top players serving at 46% and hitting twice as many UEs as winners. But Osaka deserves a lot of credit for Serena's mental state when they play. Osaka truly loves playing Serena...probably the only one on the tour who does in actual reality.

But Serena making a slam semi at 39 is unreal. It's like Navratilova making a semi in 96 (she did make a final in 94), Graf making a semi 2009, and Henin making one *next year*. If either of those latter two happened you can be sure it would be an argument for their BOAT-hood non-stop...lol Serena isn't winning these slams but she has wildly outperformed any woman in history 35+.

Steffi had told everyone in her early 20s that she wont play past 30. And she stuck to her promise. She was not greedy for record. Navratilova was... but she was totally eclipsed by Graf and Seles. Serena is extremely greedy and desperate to get that 24th title. She think it validates her GOAT claims... it doesn't.
