So the insurance thing worked out fine, under the condition that you buy
CDs as opposed to receiving money?? ( :

Some suggestions (not the first five favorites, but rather keeping in mind
"out-of-mainstreamness" and "unlikeliness-to-get-them-otherwise"
criteria):

Silvestri conducts Tchaikovsky's Manfred (Testament)
The Conchita Supervia Songbook (Pearl)
Berl Senofsky in French masterpieces (Cembal d'amour)
Hamelin "Kaleidoskope" (Hyperion)
Victor de Sabata and Berliner Philharmoniker (Pearl, 2 CDs)

one brand new CD. It's what they call a no-brainer.

In that case, perhaps we should list full-price CDs on our want list:

* Jordi Savall's recordings of "La Folia" variations on Alia Vox
* Wendy Carlos: Switch on Bach set (East Side digital)
* Various Bruckner symphonies on Camerata
(I'm interested particularly in 7 & 8)
* Simpson: Symphonies 3 & 5 on Hyperion
* Tubin symphonies on Alba
* Bliss film music on Chandos
* Kubelik's live Bruckner 9 on Orfeo (heard at the last Brucknerthon)
* Andras Schiff's Haydn set
* Schuricht's Bruckner 3 on Preiser
* Wispelwey's Elgar and Lutoslawski on Channel Classics

Any restrictions on what each CD can cost? Because now could be the
time to get all of those Japanese imports ...

Well, I'm not sure how only 5 CD's are going to help choose 236. Or
why you even care what I think in the first place. Anyway:

1) Bruckner: Symphony No8/9: Eugene Jochum/Dresden Staatskappel:
Double Forte (EMI?)
2) Purcell: Dido and Aeneas: Rene Jacob
3) Genesis: Selling England by the Pound (hey, no criteria)
4) Magma: Mekanik Destructiw Kommando
5) Prokofiev: Scythian Suite, Love for Three Oranges, etc:
Dorati/London: Mercury Living Presence

The Mingus is indispensible.
But no Tom Waits? or Bob Dylan?
Plus, 'Court and Spark' is better than Blue.
I would also add Ancerl doing Les Noces, and Szell doing Mahler 4, and
Eric Dolphy's 'Out to Lunch' and something by Andew Hill.
Rosen doing the late Sonatas.

Oh lord, I'd have to do a separate list for jazz, or it'd just get
silly (or sillier anyhow). I could start with:
Charles Mingus -- Mingus Ah Um and probably Black Saint / Sinner
Lady too
Eric Dolphy -- Out to Lunch (I'm certainly with Mazzolata there)
John Coltrane Quartet -- "Plays" or "Giant Steps" -- not sure how
I'd choose
and some Bud Powell, maybe the 'Best of Bud Powell on Verve' if I
could only have one disk, but ideally "The Amazing Bud Powell" vol.
1 (Blue Note) too.

By the way, Alain, for full-price CDs (and it still makes sense to get as
many of them as you can and to buy budget CDs later, with your own cash)

I would seriously investigate the Marston
www.marstonrecords.com

the APR
www.aprrecordings.co.uk

and the Arbiter
www.arbiterrecords.com

catalogues -- except perhaps for some really old items of preponderantly
collector and archival interest (or of some not really good sounding live
recordings), many of the issues of all three labels offer extraordinarily
valuable musical treasures in exceptional transfers. If you want I can get
more specific but I have the feeling that you would know what you might
enjoy once you take a look. Buying directly from them where possible is
also recommendable -- if not in disagreement with the insurance company's
terms -- insofar more of the profit would go to the labels themselves, in
the hard times we're experiencing.

Fascinating; I found myself scanning the shelves looking for CDs
where the thought of never being able to hear them again gave me an
immediate reaction of horror (it had to be an immediate reaction --
no time for remembering or reconsidering). Among those that I think
I paid full-price for, here's an arbitrary selection of five:

Holloway, Fantasy-Pieces on Schumann's Liederkreis; Serenade in C.
Nash Ensemble (Hyperion)

Hummel, Septet in D minor, Op. 74. Nash Ensemble (CRD)

Rameau, Les Fêtes d'Hébé. Les Arts Florissants / Christie

Simpson, Symphonies nos. 2 & 4. Bournemouth SO / Handley (Hyperion)

Chopin, Nocturnes, Moravec, Warner Apex
Schubert, Sonatas D 845/894, Lupu, Decca
Beethoven, Diabelli Variations and op. 119 Bagatelles, R. Serkin, Sony
Beethoven, Sonatas 21, 24, and 31, Kovacevich, EMI
Treasures of the Spanish Renaissance, Westminster Cath. Choir, Hill,
Hyperion

Come to think of it, that's a lot of piano. So maybe substitute one or more
of the above w/:

Schubert, Late String Quartets, Quartetto Italiano, Philips Duo

The only criteria you set is "full-priced." Then I noticed
my recent purchases are almost lower priced reissues and box
sets or used CDs. Anyway, here are some:

Finlandia FACD 357 (1987)
The Fantastic Harpsichord (recorded in 1989)
Jukka Tiensuu, harpsichord
Xenakis, Corrette, Soler, Saariaho, Tiensuu and Sciarrino
* A very interesting and fun CD

Ondine ODE 992-2
Sibelius Favourites
* Includes Sibelius conducting his Andante festivo, and
Robert Kajanus' work: Symphonic Poem 'Aino'

Speaking of Sibelius, I would like the symphony cycles by Davis/
LSO and Vanska on BIS. These are still in full price, I believe.

Another I think of is:

Handel: Water Misuc, Fireworks Music
Niquet & Le Concert Spirituel Orchestra
(Forgot the label)

Robert Kajanus' work: Symphonic Poem 'Aino'
Presumably, this is the "real" recording with Sibelius conducting, not the
other contemporary one (perhaps conducted by Toivo Haapanen, and the first
person who asks me "what's Haapanen" will get bopped on the head by this
here lollipop) which has masqueraded as it from time to time. The first
issue of the "real" one known to me was on an obscure label called YLE,
with the catalogue number CDY 231, entitled "Jean Sibelius - Live"; other
contents are "En Saga" with Kletzki from 1958, and a 1954 David Oistrakh
performance of the Violin Concerto with Nils-Erik Fougstedt; the Finnish
National Radio Orchestra performs in all selections.

Unfortunately, from the timing I've seen on the CD (which I have therefore
not bought) I suspect that the Ondine issue has been shorn of the spoken
announcement which seems to "authenticate" the performance as genuine. The
YLE disc times out at 7:38, including the announcement.

I couldn't even begin to pick 5 favourites from my ~1700 CD's. I might be
able to manage my 100 favourites, though even that varies from day to day.
%^)

Other than a large quantity of Herreweghe CD's (mostly Bach) & various
Renaissance choral music that I have recently liberated from the BRO
stockrooms, here is what I have been listening to most over the last month
or so. I think at least a few of them would end up in a hypothetical 5
favourites listing.

Schubert: Impromptus (Radu Lupu, DECCA 460 975-2)
Beethoven: Symphonies 3,5,6,9 & Brahms Symphony 1 & Haydn Variations
(Furtwangler "Legendary Post-War Concerts", Tahra FURT 1067-1070)
Debussy: La Damoiselle Elue & various arias (Bidu Sayao, Sony MHK 63221)
Faure: Requiem (1893) (Herreweghe, Harmonia Mundi HMC 901292)
Heavenly Spheres (Renaissance Choral Music) (CBC MVCD 1121)
Mozart: Requiem (Savall, Auvidis ES9915)
Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde (Ferrier, Patzak, Walter, DECCA 466 576-2)
Schubert: Mass in A flat major D.678 (Herreweghe, Harmonia Mundi HMC 901786)
A Year With Frog and Toad (OC recording)
Steve Earle: Jerusalem
Americans Swinging in Paris: Cat Anderson (EMI 7243 539658 2)
Robyn Archer: Songs for Bad Times, 1 and 2 (Brecht/Weill/Eisler/Dessau
collaborations in English translation) (Festival Records Pty. Ltd. (Aust)
D24101 & D24102)
Puccini: Tosca (Callas, Di Stefano, Gobbi, de Sabata, EMI 7243 5 67759 2)
Sarah Vaughan: Sassy Swings the Tivoli (Emarcy 832)
Etta James: Time After Time (Private Music/BMG)
B.B. King: Indianola Mississippi Seeds (MCA MCAD 31343)
John Coltrane: A Love Supreme (Impulse GRD 155)

As you can see, I've taken you up on the "No Criteria" offer. %^)

Happy shopping!

For some reason I can't resist making lists. So, here are my top
five:

1) Stravinsky conducts Stravinsky - Symphony of Psalms, Symphony in C,
Symphony in Three Movements - CBC SO, Columbia SO - CBS Masterworks

2) Brahms, Violin Concerto - Sibelius, Violin Concerto - Francescatti,
Bernstein conducting the NY Phil - Sony/Bernstein Royal Edition (I

For some reason I can't resist making lists. So, here are my top
1) Stravinsky conducts Stravinsky - Symphony of Psalms, Symphony in C,
Symphony in Three Movements - CBC SO, Columbia SO - CBS Masterworks
2) Brahms, Violin Concerto - Sibelius, Violin Concerto - Francescatti,
Bernstein conducting the NY Phil - Sony/Bernstein Royal Edition (I
don't much like the Sibelius VC, but this is my favorite Brahms)
3) Debussy - Orchestral Works - Boulez conducting the Cleveland
Orchestra and the New Philharmonia Orchestra - Sony
4) Schoenberg - Piano Concerto, Chamber Symphonies 1 and 2 - Brendel,
Gielen cond. SWF Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden - Philips
5) Wagner - Tristan und Isolde - Boehm, Nilsson, Windgassen, et. al. -
DG
This list will, I'm sure, be entirely different a couple days from

Primarily for my own amusement, here's my list at the current moment.
Only the Tristan remains from my list from a few days ago (I've been
repeatedly listening to Act 3 for the past few weeks for some reason).
Anyway, here's my new list:

Wagner - Tristan und Isolde w/Nilsson, Windgassen, Boehm - DG
Originals

Schubert - Sonatas 959, 784, 157 w/Radu Lupu - Decca

Brahms - Piano concerto 1, various solo piano pieces w/Rubinstein,
Reiner - Rubinstein Collection #34, RCA

Messiaen - Chronochromie, Et Exspecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum
w/Boulez, Cleveland Orchestra - DG

Mozart, Brahms - Clarinet Quintets w/Gervase De Peyer, Melos Ensemble
- EMI

It might help to know the audience for the CDs.

And only 5? That's brutal ;}

Sibelius: Symphonies 4 & 5 - Karajan, BPO/EMI (These are now on a 2-fer with
1, 2, 6, I believe)
Janacek: Sinfonietta - Ancerl/Supraphon (Don't have the lastest reissue yet.)
Janacek: Cunning Little Vixen - Mackerras/Decca
Shostakovich: Cello & Violin Concertos No 1 - Rostropovich, Oistrakh/Sony
Elgar: Sea Pictures; Cello Concerto - Baker, DuPre/EMI

This sounds like a strange requirement ... so many good recordings are
available at mid-price nowadays. Somebody else has listed the Callas
"Tosca," but that is not full price. You can't get the Heifetz/Reiner
Brahms/Tchaikovsky concerti either, or the Reiner/CSO "Heldenleben"/
"Zarathustra," or the Fennell/Eastman Sousa marches, or the Klemperer
Brahms "German Requiem." The Markevitch/LSO Tchaikovsky symphonies
are on a pair of Phillips Duos, and the Rowicki/LSO Dvorak symphonies
are on a trio, same label.

Looks like it's time to get a clarification from the insurance company!
See whether they will allow restatement of the settlement as "236 full-
priced CDs, or the cash equivalent in lower-priced CDs."

By the way, are you interested in replacing any of those you lost?
(Or all but 5 of them. ;-)

The ones you don't remember may not be worth being replaced anyway ;-)

So I'd suggest:

Handel: Italian Cantatas Kozena/Minkowski (DG Archiv)

Mozart: 6 quartets dedicated to Haydn, Hagen Quartet (either full priced
3CD-Box, or apparently in some countries 3 for 2) (DG)

Haydn: 4 Piano Trios Beths/Bylsma/Levin (Sony)

Schubert: Octet, L'Archibudelli (Sony)

Chopin: 4 Scherzi Pogorelich (DG)

My earlier suggestions were all over the map, price wise. In the spirit of
optimizing this opportunity, here's a full price one from one of my Wish
Lists/shopping carts (ie, love it, want to buy it, too cheap to do so at
present...):

"Arias for Farinelli" Genaux, Jacobs, Akademie für Alte Musik (Harmonia
Mundi HMC 901778) Has excellent liner notes and complete texts

Also, two other personal favourites which are at full-price or close to it:

Vivaldi: Motets for Soprano (Karina Gauvin, Analekta FL 2-3099) Contains:
Laudate pueri Dominum in C minor, RV 600, O qui coeli, RV 631, and Sum in
medio tempestatum, RV 632

Reimann: Lear (Fischer-Dieskau, Dernesch, Albrecht, DG 2GH2 463-480). The
CD release doesn't have the spiffy book that came with the LP but it does
have a libretto.

Further to my earlier suggestion of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", there
is a higher priced version 2 CD version currently out which is remastered
and has additional takes, if you don't have it already.

Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet (Previn, or Maazel, EMI Forte and Decca Double)
Debussy - Pelléas et Mélisande (Karajan, EMI)
The Guide to Good Sax - Getz, Parker, Young, Rollins, Hodges, Coltrane, et
al (Verve twofer)
Bach Cantatas (your choice, but I enjoy Rilling, and Schreier especially)
Haydn symphonies - (Dorati, but preferably Fischer, with all of Weil's
output on Sony Vivarte)

Of course, on much cheaper labels still, I have hundreds of preferable
favourites, but if spending money is the object, then why not? Basically,
for the the cost of 236 full-priced CDs, I'd get better value from 500 or
more mid-priced or bargain favourites, but then it is your call.

Whatever you decide to get, happy listening anyway.

With my usual penchant for the organ (no, not *that* organ, stupid...):

- Frederic Blanc improvises (Motette 11451)
- Jean Ferrard plays Bach (SIC 004)
- Ben van Oosten plays Widor symphonies 5&6 (MDG 316 0403-2)
- Louis Robilliard plays Liszt, Mendelssohn and Brahms (Festivo 6931 722)
- Stephen Tharp plays Widor, Franck, Saint-Saens and Dupre (JAV 130)

I don't know if I have 5 "favorite" CDs, but some recordings that I wouldn't
want to be without:

1. Chausson: Symphony et al. (Munch/BSO)
2. Faure: Orchestral works (Marriner/ASMF)
3. Ligeti: the Atmospheres, Lux Aeterna, etc. disc on Wergo
4. Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde (Ferrier/Patzak/Walter or
Miller/Haefliger/Walter)
5. Shostakovich: Symphony #8 (Mravinsky/Leningrad)

Horowitz Schumann Jacket Collection MS 7264 Sony
For what this costs you can get the entire Sony box from MDT. That is
something to consider too, where you order your CDs from to maximize your
funds.
And one can even shop around and find sealed record club editions of the Sony
box on eBay or other such venues. That's how I got mine for <$105.

I hate to ask, but is the BMG Horowitz box gone, or even gone gone?

The distribution situation is getting rather desperate almost everywhere.
For example, the Pavane and Ondine labels are no longer distributed in the
UK, even though they have some US distribution. So UK customers may have to
start making some of their purchases from Germany or even the US. As a US
record collector, I sure wish jpc's postal rates to the US were not so
outlandishly high.

I thought I was the only person that liked this !
A must, i think, if only for the first movement, which is just
unbelieveable.

Brahms Symphonies #2 & 4 / Levine/CSO (OK I'm cheating;
did this one myself)
As you would have had to, since these are the two in that
cycle that haven't been on any (TMK) US CD.

Speaking of Milstein, I'm very fond of his Bach Sonatas and Partitas
So am I. (The DG's, at least; haven't heard the EMI's.)

Yes, the DG. That's the one I have.
You should check out the EMI set, which I find a lot more poetic (the DG has
more fire). The sound is also very good.

Actually, what I really want to check out is the Podger set. It's on my
list ...
