Is it a formal event?
it's a mix of everything.

the daytime events are informal for most attendees with jeans and shorts if the weather permits. now many other people will wear lao dresses to celebrate this special occasion, yours truly included. so to show your laoness on that day you may want to dress up in lao traditional dress and if your kid shows in a sinh dress that will be hot.

the saturday evening event is formal with suit and tie for men and lao dresses for women.

My daughter has her little Laos dress. She might not look Laos but she'll tell you she is and she loves her dress. Sounds like fun. Do you have to purchase a ticket or some sort?

Oh, that's gonna be nice, Casalao... at the Gaslamp Quarter...

That's one of the few places I've missed, all these 15 years away from San Diego... The Gaslamp Quarter, with live guitar guys banging away beautiful Fleminco music.... the Mt. Soledad..... La Jolla Cove.... UCSD-"Blacks Beach" (where beautiful "co-eds" where everywhere, very "under-clothed").... Hillcrest.... the Cuyamaca-to-Polamar Mountain Range, where there's snow everywhere, in December, every year I took 6th/7th graders to their one-week camp...

Com'on, Connie--Do you think my shy 32 years old brother will agree to give you his picture? He is a shy young man-I already tell you--what you need to do is to ask your lady friends to come to the Lao New Year Festival and introduce your friends to him since it is going to be easy to spot him because he is going to be one of the three judges for the Lao Idol anyway!

Btw, if you have single and available male friends who are smart and handsome along with politically talkative conservative, please bring some and introduce to my VERY VERY VERY PICKY 28 years old sister, Her Lao, too since she is going to be there at the Lao New Year Festival as well. Thank you in advance for taking care of my SHY brother and VERY VERY VERY Picky Sister, Her Lao.

I'm surprised he's not saying anything or objecting, lol. Making me afraid to meet him, lol. The only Asian girls that I know that are single would not be caught dead at a Lao festival, lol. I rarely go myself. I think it's because I don't know what to do or what shouldn't do. So I just avoid the whole thing. Plus Laos people talk about each other too much, lol. For Her Lao, what's her flavor? Lol I'm going to have to invite both of them to Big Bear with us. We go every year and rent out a huge cabin about 20-25 people and most of them are single Laos guy and girls and we have other races as well. So they have the entire weekend to get to know each other because they party the entire weekend and somehow still have the energy to go snowboarding. Crazy kids! So I'm gonna keep them in mind, when it gets close, I'll let them know.

Sorry, I am married, Connie. So you single men guys --- those tall, handsome and divorced White/European men --- won't have the opportunity with me, even though my husband is on a one-way trip to Mars, never to return, alas!

I am a very conservative, Evengelical Mormon and I take my vows --- "until death due us part" --- very seriously, unlike Sao Sou Maly, who's married and divorced more husbands than Zsar Zsar Gabor and Elizabeth Taylor combined... just the past 15 years alone, that I've gotten to know here, her, via Social Culture Laos...

but yeah... if anybody of you comes down to san diego for the lao new year festivity, be my guest but pay your own entrance ticket.

if you are fool hardy enough then try the lao idol singing contest. that should be fun right there. we are still taking candidates.

so yeah... i'll be hanging around the lao idol singing contest area for sure. may sing a song or two if there's no other singer around.

Connie, you shouldn't make that assumption. If "Casalao" WAS/IS my former Middle School teacher, in San Diego --- and I am only assuming, since I don't know for sure ---- than that man was/is very handsome, though a bit elderly by now, I guess! LOL

Casalao, Sao Sou Maly, and I were northern-Lao-born shoeless hillbillies.

I originally hailed from the mountains of Luang Prabang and Oudomxay, Sao Sou Maly from Dien Bien Phu (she snaked into Laos at a young age, but you could hear her Dien Bien Phu accent), and Casalao from Samneu, Houaphan...

Although I must admit I went to my first year of school IN VIENTIANE, but up in the mountains between Kasi and Vang Vieng, so, as you could tell, I am very sophisticated, like those Vientianites!

Hey, not all girls are about the looks but we are all guilty when it comes to that. At glance you're not gonna know whether they have a good personality or not so you're gonna go with he looks first. I'm a perfect example of not judging by the looks. People are always in shock when they see my man. They say I don't look like I would be with that kind of guy, in other words, they're saying that my man is ugly, lol. I'm for the under dog. Personality is everything and I think you have a great personality. Which is a great start. So you'll be coming to Big Bear with me this year. :) I can tell you this, there's no ugly girls there but can't say the same for their personalities though. Might not want to take her home to your mother, lol. I'm j/k. They are all very nice.

Her Lao,

The people I surround myself with, are good people and any of the guys would be a catch. We're not about using people but helping others and when we get together, we can be as drunk as heck and in a cabin of over 20 of us, never once there was drama of any kind. We don't like people that are unstable and violent. So if you're looking for a good man, come my way. :)

I was just kidding peeps! All the stuff that I have read so far are funny as heck, especially when you guys are clowning on each other. I, of all people, don't make assumptions and definitely don't take others peoples words for anything. What they see ugly, I might see pretty so I rather be the judge or see it myself. I'm pretty close to a saint if you really know me. I go through life trying my best to do right by others and that's important to me. I love to laugh and act like a kid sometimes and mess around a lot so keep that in mind and laugh a little. Life is too short to be serious all the time. Loosen up! :)

Now that you mentioned the most educated and most sophisticated and most cosmopolitan California city, FRESNO... I see a relatively large Lao Wat ---- very, very colorfully and elaborately, traditionally decorated --- no more than one mile from my parents place, the last a couple months that I've been here....

I keep wondering if it is open to the public?, y'know, like a "normal church" or mosque or temple?

I want to drop by and see it, as I've never been to a real traditional Lao wat (beyond seeing them in pictures and videos). I never had a chance to see one, in Laos, when we took off back in the 5th century BC, swimming across the Mekong River to Nan, Thailand...

(The Golden Mormon Church, I think they prefer "temple", in University/La Jolla, for example, is NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, as it cost TENS OF MILLIONS to build, and it is a DUE-PAYING, MEMBERSHIP MEMBERS only temple.)

most lao buddhist temples are open to the public every day.

the lao new year will be in full swing this coming weekend so that place will be very crowded. may want to stop by to check it out. don't bring your hmong musket though or else ພໍ່ອອກແມ່ອອກ will beat the crap out of you.

in my mind, the best place to get the buddhist vibe has to be luangprabang. famous folks like jude law, sienna miller and mick jagger have gone there to recharge and get in touch with mother earth. jude law and the beautiful sienna got extra filling of course.

Dont' worry, no Hmong muskets. I'd never touch such a sophisticated weapon, since I don't know how to handle sophisticated weapons. Never held a real gun before.

I will simply walk barefooted, with my traditional Hmong pants and shirt.

If I go --- although it's probably too hot for my tender wimpy bare feet to withstand --- if I go, I'd take pictures of me being barefooted in Hmong custom, so y'all would know I really came down, barefooted, from the mountains overlooking the beautiful cities of Kasi and Vang Vieng, an authentic Vientianite (albeit from the "country")...

Wait... second thought... if I can't carry my lawfully acquired gun to a temple, who's gonna protect me?

After all, we all know smart and law abiding people SHOULD BE able to carry a self-protection gun at all places, at all times. We know evil people all have and all carry guns, wherever they go.

So it is stupid, if we law abiding citizens can't carry guns like those criminals.

Why should criminals have more rights than we do, as law abiding citizens?

Jesus hating and gun hating Liberals and socialists like Obama are so stupid... they always try to take guns away FROM law abiding American citizens and GIVE THEM TO CRIMINALS to carry and to use them in public, AGAINST defenseless, law abiding citizens, as criminals see fit... but, oh, no, law abiding citizens can't carry guns on their hips, on their backs, etc. in public?

That is messed up!

If anything, it should be THE REVERSED: all responsible, law abiding citizens should be able to carry guns on their hips, on their backs, or anywhere (schools, universities, churches, hospitals, court houses, city halls, Congress, beaches, parties, etc), ON THE ONE HAND, and criminals should be BANNED from being able to carry and to use guns!

Imagine you had a BIG MAGNUM, like one of those Dirty Harry/Clint Eastwood carries, and some drunken idiot from a party, or from sun tanning session on the beach, tried to feel you up, or something. You think HE would do it, if he knew you had a big gun on your hips and could pull it on him the second his hand extends towards you?

Or you think idiots would argue, with you, if they knew they was wrong and you was right, and they also know you carry a big gun on your hips? Of course, not!

Again, I don't know why Liberals and socialists always TRY SO HARD to restrict us good law abiding citizens from carrying guns, in public, to protect us from idiots and criminals!

I must conclude: there is something NOT RIGHT in the heads of Liberals and atheists and other idiots who hate guns, or who don't know how to use guns.

The day that the government decides to take our guns away, I assure you there will be another Civil War. I will never give up my guns, and who said we can't take our guns with us? Working on a carrying license ; ) but I still take mine with me to our place of business. Criminals will always have means to a firearms, gun manufacturers will go underground and just like marijuana, you can't get rid of it but I'm sure the government will try.
